Things I have tried include: - uninstalling the update - repairing Internet Explorer - reinstalling Internet Explorer - replacing the copy of SHLWAPI.DLL in c:\windows\system The configuration of my machine is as follows: AMD Athlon based PC running Windows ME (4.90.3000), 1 gig of RAM, 2 hard discs (40Gb and 120Gb).     - ScanDefrag Hi all, Just a small thank you to those who wrote this program. Koldbear, Ken Routhier, Bill Blanton, Jon Scott and Blueorb Software. After getting the backdoor.hogle trojan and removing it, scandisk refused to run. I tried all of the solutions that I know, nothing I did worked! These included: Uncheck all running programs in msconfig. Scandisk in normal mode. Scandisk in safe mode. Endtask on all running programs. Uninstall some suspicious programs. I have been running scandisk from dos for about two weeks because of this issue. Early this morning I came across this small utility on another tech forum and gave it a try, it worked.     - Lost Quick Launch Toolbar Windows Me 4.90.3000 My computer froze so I rebooted. After reboot the Quick Launch toolbar was present but blank. I was unable to drag shortcuts to the blank area. So I then right clicked on the main toolbar and unticked Quick Launch toolbar. I then right clicked again and ticked Quick Launch toolbar. This produced an error box saying "Unable to create toolbar" The Quick Launch toolbar has now disappeared. Can anyone tell me how to recover my Quick Launch toolbar please?     - 0E:0028: error in ME Desktop I have messed something up and don't know how to correct it. I deleted a program that wasn't needed anymore and after rebooting my ME goes to the desktop screen and the little hour glass won't go away.     - can't use internet I am using a daul-boot pc with windows me & xp pro with IE 6.0, Celeron, 256 MB ram, office xp, Norton 2003 with dial-up internet. I am having problem with my windows me, I can't use the internet. I am able to connect to the internet just fine but the connection is completely dead, IE just displays "page can't be displayed" and no matter what I try the data send & receives is just 400bytes. there is no problem with the isp as I have already tested this connection of my XP Pro machine. I have already reinstalled IE 6.0, Dial-Up Networking, modem driver. all this is havening after I used Ad-Aware and deleted few reg entries. does anybody know how to fix this problem, I don't want to reinstall windows.     - Thank you Mike, Noel! Thanks, guys! That was exactly it! I had over 10GB of System Restore files! I booted into DOS with a floppy and was able to delete about 3.5GB of them, but even in DOS it takes about 4/5 of a second per file to delete... so I'm going to be deleting for the next couple of nights, hehe. Is there an option to disable System Restore anywhere? If so, where is it? (Amazing side note: The System Restore space slider is still greyed out, but it moved to the right since I last looked at it. Three notches to the right. How obnoxious!) I attempted to make my second drive indo a Windows 98 drive and then to use my Windows ME drive to attempt to load and scan the computer with antivirus software.     - Weird Problem -- Repeating C's and N's This is a strange problem. Periodically, I get a sequence of repeating C's and N's (both uppercase and lowercase). When this is happening, I cannot select any menu item because the string of C's and N's is controlling the keyboard input. The only thing that seems to stop it is to either reboot the computer or to click on the Windows start key and keep pressing the letter S (between all the C's and N's) until the letter S finally gets recognized. I don't have a virus. I don't have any spies. I don't have any programs that shouldn't be there. I would think if it were a problem with the keyboard (keys getting stuck for example) that pressing the letter S would not stop the problem. Anybody ever heard of this??? Thanks.     - folder options While attempting to change the icon to my folders I accidently caused the MS-DOS Prompt window to come up every time I double click on a folder in My Documents. I was in Folder Options under Tools in File Types and under Advanced in the Folder and File Folder spot and I changed the icon. I made the mistake of thinking that if I set it as Default it would stick. Instead it started to open the Windows Explorer every time I doubleclicked. So I went back in and discovered that I had set the command Explore as Default not the icon. So I tried to give it a new command like Open and set that as default so now it opens MS-DOS Prompt. If anyone has any ideas on how do undo a default I can't delete the actions out the option is not available with folders and I have tried System Restore, unsuccessfully. I have Windows Me. Something is, probably, using up your cpu cycles......get a good process
viewer, i.e. Process Explorer, free, from www.sysinternals.com and see the
culprit.
