Connect via dialup

Modem works fine (can fax etc.). Under add/delete programs/windows resources
"Communications" 6.3 meg is grayed out and when opened shows 0.0 megs for
phone/ dial up options. Can't connect to Internet (I'm on a different
computer now). Tried to open a new TCP/IP protocol, but it always reverts to
only the non-address ones already installed. Port 110 is probably where
everything works from (or not?).

In WinME it's 'Setup', you must have a different OS, but the problem is the
same: Networking, it has to be enabled. Someone will help you with it
shortly.

This is correct. All that installing Dial-Up Networking involves are some
registry settings.

Error messages and logs are the clue here. What do they have to say?

Rather than playing around with the TCP/IP settings which I feel is far
more likely to cause rather than solve problems I would suggest that you
create a new dial-up "connectoid" using the Dial-Up Networking Wizard
(Start | Settings | Dial-Up Networking). Use this and if you still cannot
connect make a note of the errors.

I'll try. Forgot to mention I reinstalled ME. Problem started when I
downloaded new 1.5 version of Spybot. It killed Adaware, Sygate and
Spyblaster as well as corrupting Norton. I've deleted them all for now.

If you've got or had Norton installed then all bets are off and you would
be best advised to clean install Win Me. Norton is a system killer when
installed on Win Me although it's not much better regardless of the
operating system in use.

Figured out I need disk with device drivers. Original from Dell was for NT
not ME. They don't have it anymore. Conexant doesn't either (Conexant HCF V90
56K RTAD Speakerphone PCI). Even though modem works, as long as Communication
resource is incomplete, connection is impossible. Help!

Have you tried using the generic v90 56k modem driver that is built in to
Win Me?

Assuming that you have Win Me's Dial-Up Networking installed (Add/Remove
Programs | Windows Setup | Communications | Details and check "Dial-Up
Networking", and then OK and Apply) you can something similar to what
follows (difficult for me to reproduce the steps exactly as my Win Me box
has no modem)

When asked for the driver disk when installing the modem select "(Standard
Modem Types") in the manufacturers list in the LH pane and in the RH pane
select "Standard 56000 bps V90 Modem".

Alternatively download and try the original NT driver for your modem from
http://driverzone.com/device.php?id=9442
