    - Trouble with desktop icons The desktop icons My Computer and My Documents won't open when I double click them. I recently upgraded to XP Home, same problem. The task manager shows CPU usage of 100% when I double click these icons, also control panel and find files and folders does the same thing.     - start up error when i start my computer i get an error pop up right before my desktop loads and it says Explorer has caused an error in COMCTL32.DLL. and tells me to restart if the problem occurs again. i click ok and then my computer freezes and i can not do anything after that.. i restart and the same problem happens, i cant even start in safe mode.     - Loading USB Drivers after having much trouble with my system. I have formatted c: and reloaded Win ME and all other pertinent software. However, In my device manager I have yellow ? marks on the PCI and two USB. I thought they still must need a driver, but I can not find the drivers on any of CDs that originally came with my system.     - rdfmjbfy.exe When trying to run an MS-Dos program (Condor DBMS) on ME, get error message "Can't find rdfmjbfy.exe file". Yet on Windows 98 and Windows XP, Condor DBMS runs just fine.     - virus attacks thru e-mail harvesting FYI: a couple of weeks ago, while responding to a note here, I put one of my e-mail addresses into the 'Sender's E-mail' line in the 'Post a New Message' screen. Now I am averaging about a dozen e-mails with virus attachments per day. I have shut down that e-mail address, which fortunately was a backup specifically for risky sites. Now I just need a new one.     - removing persistent virus damage test posted to help group microsoft.public.windowsme.general: I have a pc with damage from viruses. I have Norton Antivirus with current definitions, but it does not detect the viruses sdware.ncase and adware.bookedspace. I printed the instructions from Symantec, and manually removed these viruses, but they keep recurring. My Windows version is ME, and my IE version is 6.0.2800.1106. When I first restart the system, I get an error "rundll has caused an error in mmsystem.dll. rundll will now close. if you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer." Also, I cannot print to a network printer from any programs or to print a test page. When I try to go to start/setting/printers, and select the printer, I get the same error I did on startup ["rundll has caused an error in mmsystem.dll. rundll will now close. if you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."] if I try a second time, then I get the properties box, where I can click to print a test page, and then I get an error, "Windows was unable to print the test page. Would you like to begin troubleshooting now?" Troubleshooter is unable to resolve the problem. Also, in IE, I keep getting an unwated search bar poping up. I can turn it off by going to view, and toolbars, but there is no name for it. I just click to uncheck the blank space, and this searchbar goes away. Also, my default home page keeps resetting to http://www.i-lookup.com, no matter how many times I reset it. Also, I tried to add this page to tools/internet options/security/restricted sites, but It will not allow it, saying it is already on another zone, which it is not, visibly.     - _restore file Hopefully someone in this forum can help me with this problem. I recently got an anti-virus program. It found 26 viruses on my computer and eliminated 3 of them. The other 23 are in the file \_restore on my computer. It cannot eliminate these files because as you all know, they are 'system' files which cannot be deleted. The only way I can see to delete these files is to delete the entire file. Is there a way to do this? I've tried everything I can think of but to no avail. Can anyone help me here?     - Hardware resources changes Yesterday, defrag seemed to be starting automatically. WHenever I noticed it, I cancelled it. I did a restart before I went to bed & didn't bother logging on. This morning, whne I logged on (which, btw, I'd love to turn off as we no longer have a home network!), I got the pop-up message that the new hardware that has been detected/system settings will change but I need to reboot. ?????? I have NOT installed any new hardware. My virus protetction is up and running all day along with firewall. I just scanned the c:\windows file & came up with no infections.     - .tmp files NOT in Windows\TEMP Folder....OK to Delete? When I do a search for files on my PC by entering .tmp or .TMP , the search brings up over 3,600 files with the extension .tmp or .TMP. Most of these are in C:\\Windows. Othere are in C:\\Windows\System They are not in C:Windows\TEMP folder, however. So I'm wondering how safe it is to delete ALL of these? Many of them have long odd filenames such as : fffe73e9_{A3D4287C-53F7-4745-A98A-3C3C6D2317A3}.tmp Aside form the practical question about deleting all these, I'm also curious as to what they are.     - no icons in "My Documents" I am having problems with my computer after picking up malware of some sort. I have run my AV scan and CWShredder and Ad-Aware to try to clean up my system. I am looking for suggestions on how to deal with the following: When I look in the folders "My Documents" and "My Computer", the window shows none of the contents of the folder. It tells me how many objects are there but no icons are visible. The items are not deleted because I can open them in other ways. What has happened to cause this? Can I fix it? Also, when I try to start Internet Explorer, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot find ieexplore.exe. Where can I find a copy of this file so that I can replace it? Thanks for any help. Did startup disk, Scanreg /fix and Scanreg /restore previous backup. Even tried using WinMe CD same error. Was running Regmon, before it caused an error in kernel32.dll.     - problems since upgrading to outlook express 6.0 I recently upgraded to outlook express 6.0. and the new version of microsoft internet explorer. Since then, when I close this program I get an eror message "Msimn has caused an error in Kernel32.DLL. Msimn will now close" The error message box does not close when I click the close button. Despite this, I can still use other programs and re-open outlook express 6.0 Additionally, I have not been able to open text file e- mail attachments since upgrading to OE 6.0. I CAN open and view e-mail photo attachments. I went to the Microsoft page and downloaded the available patches and updates for Outlook Express 6.0, but this has not helped.     - Attn Mike M or others Ok Mike, It seemed as though my computer problems started around a month or so ago after I deleted some Java system files. The problem seemed to get much worse over the past week or so. My biggest problem at this point is that my computer continually freezes up while I am online. It usually happens when I am trying to move to a new location. I get many error "boxes". 1. "WJ view "system could not find file" This pops up every time I start my computer. 2. "DW caused an error in DW.EXE. DW will now close" Also every time I start up. 3. "/explore error in USER.EXE." I ran updated virus check and my computer looks clean?? Noel recommended I download adaware. I did that and quarintened many files, but without change after restarting computer. What do you guys recommend I do???     - Deleted some system files OOPs ! Hello, I mistakingly deleted some system files a few months ago. Since then my computer has not been right. Go figure! My recyling bin is empty.     - Missing file after reinstalling Windows I had Windows ME reinstalled on my computer after getting a virus. When I connected my digital camera to my computer before all this happened, it installed its own driver. Now when I connect my camera I get the message "USBNTMAP.Sys was not found.     - USB ports don't work My USB ports won't work. I've updated/deleted/installed/re-installed the drivers and nothing helps. There are no conflicts or problems shown in the Device Manager.     - Updates error When I try to install the critical updates my computer needs for Windows ME, it will download and install them, but then when it says you must restart your computer, my screen turns black and with white writing it says cannot update the files %1 and %2.     - Zipped Yes I have come across this with a client computer and found a particular virus called My Doom was active in the computer. Unfortunately for the client all his files were lost as it zipped everything including my document files and when a system cleam was done all the files were infected and deleted. This was maybe because the client left it too late to have his computer looked at.     - IE and Adobe Reader 6.0 Sure seems like I should be able to figure this out, but, redfaced, I cannot. Since installing Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0, I can no longer access any pdf files on the net.
