I have expressed this numerous times before; but no one wishes to believe this for what ever reason. While I am typing (yes as great speed and accuracy; but I admit I am a poor speller; but I *DO* have and use a spelling checker from my Office 2003 Pro) I can for limited times put my physical pain out of my conscience mind and relegate it to the nether regions of my subconscious. I only ever leave a group for one of three reasons. One if my family (that doesn't read nor post to Usenet) is attacked verbally or with illegally obtained pictures. Two if I become bored with a group. Three and most importantly if the denizens of a group are particularly asinine and they start to pull me down to their level. On point three, I don't mind their being asinine or haranguing me or calling me all sorts of names; but I abhor my family being brought into the fray. Sometimes however I do find myself being pulled down into the cesspool of depravity and asinine which I will NOT allow and if I find that to be occurring I will remove myself from said group. Shane: You need to get a grip and realize that if you play around in these news groups you ARE going to sooner or later get bit by someone that doesn't care what they say or how they say it. You put me in mind of a young child that when their parents put presents or something in a closet and then tells the child that there are monsters in the closet to keep them from looking, believes in the monsters so strongly that if the parent opens the door and pulls out a present you would not open the present for fear of something jumping out and grabbing you. Well either that or you are just trying to put me on about your believing in my having some sort of powers. Never fear I have no powers at all that any other human being doesn't also have. In real life I am a regular sort of person other then my being physically disabled almost to the point of needing a wheel chair; but even though my doctors say I should be in one will continue to walk as long as I can until I start falling down too much from my legs going out from under me. I don't tell you or others in this group this to garner any sort of sympathy or as any type of excuse for my behavior; but rather as a point of fact. You try and use your affiliation or knowing Hells Angels like a weapon; but in fact if they knew you were doing so, they would take a very dim view of it. I tried to tell you before, I have nothing but respect for almost all Motorcycle clubs, and of yet I personally have not come across one that did not garner my respect. We have a bikers rodeo here every year, and when our local authorities tried to stop the rodeo; because they did not think it looked good for tourism, I and several others and a lot of bikers took up petitions to prevent the town council from stopping all local biker rodeos. Whether or not you choose to believe it I do volunteer and help out the two local biker clubs as much as my disabilities allow. I use to ride myself back when I first got out of the military and was, well sort of wild and wooly and did some things I am not proud of; but I did and I have to live with that. Like you I also quit smoking, I did it cold turkey after smoking for over 26 years and I have not smoked now since September 11th of 2000. I use to be on one of the most physically addicting pain medications out there called oxycotin or as some say *hillbilly heroin*. I was on 60Mg 4 times a day with 2 percoetts in between for breakout pain. When I told the Veterans Administration that I wanted off of them and to take something else they told me that I had been on most all of the pain medications that they had. I had to go through the patient advocate to get my doctors to listen to me and then was hospitalized and went into a coma when I tried to do it cold turkey because I refused to take any pain medication. After which I relented and allowed them to prescribe methadone and before you get any wise ars ideas NO I have never used heroin, methadone is also used for the long term treatment of chronic severe pain. I take 40Mg of methadone 4 times a day and if you know anyone that has anything to do with the treatment of chronic pain they will tell you that 40mg 4 times a day is a hefty dose usually reserved for those with terminal cancer. You and others seam to think I am faking my physical disabilities, well if you knew anything about the Social Security Administration here in the USA you would know that that is as close to being imposable as can be; because they usually require you to have one foot on a banana peel and the other in the grave before they grant you a disability check. It took me three years of test and MRI's and CAT scans and X-Rays and trying to get rehabilitation therapy and such to do some sort of work; but my disability is one of those that the physical pain can actually knock me out when it gets to a certain point I start getting stomach cramps, and then start seeing sort of little fire flies out on the periphery of my vision and then the next step is that I fall out unconscious. I don't tell you about my pain and such to get any type of sympathy; because the truth be known that is the absolute LAST thing I want or need. My family try and do everything for me and would just have me sit in front of my pc all day and night; but I can't even do that; because I can only set for a limited amount of time and then have to move. And finally to you Shane, I know you are reading this; because I know human nature. Heather: Well about all I can say about you is you deserve to be in a group where everyone is EXACTLY like YOU, that can nit pick and pull apart each others posts, instead of just understanding that some people don't like to take the time to try and be perfect in there writing. I am a published poet, although it is true it has been some time since I was published; because I am the sort that I submitted one poem one time just to prove to *myself* that I was good enough to be published and after that it didn't and doesn't matter (see I can use the correct one when *I choose*)to me whether or not I get any more published. To me writing poetry or music or even prose (I should really submit some of my stories though) is a personal thing that I do for my *own* enjoyment and I have neither the desire nor inclination to share it with the world in general or anyone in particular through publishing it for general consumption, although I do have a limited number of my poems online just because well I really truly don't know why I put them up. Oh and the typing medal in High School, my family moved around a lot and when we moved that year it was close to the end of the year, and when the class took the test I beat the next best typist by 20Wpm; but the teacher told me that the girl that was next fastest and accurate had planed to win and all her friends and such so I agreed to let her have it; because even back then medals and such for accomplishment or what ever didn't matter to me, to me it was enough to know I was the best in the class. Just remember in a typing test you have NO NEED to spell correctly because all you are doing is *looking* at the correct spelling and grammar and punctuation and then typing what you see. It is not a test of spelling,grammar or punctuation; but rather a test of manual dexterity and I guess because I learned to play lead,rhythm and bass guitar in my early teens it helped with my dexterity. I was however the ONLY guy in the typing class. I have related the events of my almost winning the typing medal in high school before on Usenet and if you like you can check and see it hasn't varied; because I learned a long time ago that aside from it being the morally right thing to do, unless you have a photographic memory (which I don't) you need to always tell the truth; because if you tell the truth you have no need to remember what you said; because the truth is always always always. the same. To the rest of the Group: I have tried to create a character on Usenet and I have succeeded to a degree. How many others can say that for what ever reason someone creates web pages about them? Whether those pages be making fun of the person or what ever. To instill a feeling in someone strong enough that they feel compelled to create a web page takes a certain gena say quah (French spelling ?) To get someone to write a pros story about them takes some doing. Long after I am gone on to the other side people will be reading about my adventures on Usenet who here can say the same? No one, now some will say that they would not want to be remembered as such; but to be remembered in what ever fashion is better then falling into obscurity. Even though it matters little to of such thing, I found it an interesting challenge to see if it could be accomplished. I have progressed the theorem to the point that I came to this news group and those that had never seen a single post from me, took the *word* of those that had and joined in the games of attacking me. Which only went to prove to me the success of what I had set out to do. Well originally I started out on IRC to do like wise with the Moof Monsters thing; but this worked out better. Regardless of what those on some groups think I am a very competent computer repair person and also quite good with software and virus removal. I am directly responsible for at least one computer shop here locally being opened; because I trained the owner. He had attended a pre A+ certification class at the local University branch; but after successfully completing it, he told me that had I not trained him that class would not have prepared him to open his store. He and other local techs still call *me* when they have a problem. Some will say *well then get off your ars and go back to work* which I would gladly do, if I could find some work either from home, or that would allow me to take my pain meds and when the need arise to go and seclude myself in a dark, cold room to lay down with a heating or ice pack until the pain subsided enough to return. The only degree I have is a TV Repairman Certificate I received while in the military from the Sears Institute of Technology. My military records however show my job title as Electronics 26T; because I repaired main frame computers as well as avionic bays and other electronic test equipment. IOW, I tested and repaired the equipment used to maintain electronics. I did not work on TV's I worked on VTM's Ohm meters, oscilloscopes, signal injectors and other various and proprietary equipment for the military. For a short time just prior to my coming home from Vietnam I *was* reassigned up country to Pleiku as a Morning Report Clerk; because I could type very well and accurately. You see a morning report can contain exactly ZERO mistakes. The morning report sends the information up the chain of command as to whom reported for duty, who died, who was reassigned for TDY (Temporary duty) and such, maybe you can see why they tolerated ZERO errors. On one occasion when taking distribution to battalion I wound the jeep out too tight on the gravel road along side the ammo bunkers and I rolled the jeep and was knocked out for 3 days, and was at hospital for 2 weeks; but as I have said before when offered to return to the states on what was called a blue pajama flight I knew because of being a morning report clerk that would entail someone else coming to Vietnam 3 months early because of my having 3 months left on my tour. I opted to just tuff it out and returned to my unit in a neck and back brace with pain meds. I guess that is why I have had and am having such a hard time getting service connected disability; because of my not taking the earl hospital flight the records got snafued and it has taken me until last year to track down my old operations safety officer which at the time was still working for the military as a civilian over in Bosnia as a Flight Safety Officer. He sent me a notarize statement; but now the Veterans Administration says that my injuries are "Acute in nature, transitory with no residual effects", IOW it knocked the piss out of me then but now they say it has no lasing effects. Even though my doctors say that the likelihood of the bone spurs in my neck that are trying to pierce my spinal bundle, occurred 25-30 years ago the VA says the jeep accident has no bearing on my physical disabilities. The offered me a non-service connected disability that would pay almost two times as much as what I am receiving from Social Security, if I accept it that would curtail any future attempts at service connection and service connection would pay almost three times what non-service connection does and it would also pay for University for my children. In any event, as I said in the subject line, I will NOT read any replies regardless of what I said previously; because I will be turning off my bots that scour Usenet looking for mention of my Sugien nic; because as a therapeutic pain management tool Usenet is turning out to be counter productive as well as counter intuitive. I have decided to put more energy into my music and poems and prose as well as my volunteer work with the church, motorcycle clubs, food banks, after school latch key kids safety, crisis center phone sitting, well it is too long a list to put down and it is doubtful any here will believe it; because I guess I have done so good a job of creating the Sugien persona, that when I try and tell what the real life me *is* doing no one cares or believes. It doesn't bother me however; because my life does not and never has revolved around those on Usenet. I have tried to be a help; but on the groups that know Sugien I was blocked at every turn and although people emailed me to say thank you because they did not want groups to harangue them for well I guess for their taking advice from me that helped them. So good by, so long, no need to reply, unless you just want those here other then me to read it; because I am unscrewing (yes I know) from this NG and putting more time in more rewarding ventures.     - kernel32.dll error when opening Windows Explorer, My Documents etc Whenever I try to open Windows Explorer, My Documents and My Network Places, I get a kernel32.dll invalid page fault error. More often than not, I have to restore the active desktop after closing the error window. Internet Explorer will not open. I've removed .pwl files I've changed the memory module & run a diagnostic on the memory System restore won't restore, even though I've gone back to last month after restore points this month don't work.     - Display colour & size help- error in MMSYSTEM.DLL Hi, I hope some one can help me out! I turned on my computer this morning after a normal shut down last night... When I turned it on the colour was set to 16 with large icons. I changed it and restarted it and it just popped up the same. I tired afew times with the same resul;t... when it restarts it says " Error: Rundll has caused an erro in MMSYSTEM.DLL. Rundll will now close." Could not fix the problem, so I tired to do a system restore, which I have never done. Tried to do it for 3 different days, and each time when the computer restarted its said "Rstrui has caused an error inn KERNEL32.DLL. Rstrui will now close." And then it says system restore could not be completed. I mainly just want to get my colour and icon size back to normal, but I have no clue why it wont work.. any ideas?? Thanks a lot!     - XP Pro Upgrade 11 HOURS!!! Things started out well; got the upgrade, backed up what I could and forged ahead with leaving WinME behind. The process gets through the Dynamic Update and the first restart. Then...11 hours later and the progress bar isn't even halfway through! The 'puter meets the sys-req, so that's not it.     - Can't Access Registry I had two viruses: Winlog and Winsupdater. System Suite 5 removed them. Then I tried to go into the registry using regedit to remove any instances of the viruses from there and a DOS window popped up with a message box on top of it saying "The program tried to execute an invalid instruction. Fault Location: 0C12: 0EE8 Interrupts in Service: None" I used System Suite's Registry Fixer, but there weren't any keys listed for the viruses. I used Registry Magic and it found 2 instances of each virus. I deleted them (I suppose), but I'm still having the problem. How dangerous is this and how can I fix it?     - OT: good by to *this* group I have risked ignominy here simply because I don't wish to see people wallow in ignorance. However I feel I have been unjustly persecuted; because had I socked up and posted with no one knowing whom I was, I doubt my posts would have met the resistance, and down right ranker and anger which I did with the very *first* post. People respond most times in kind with what is said to them, and I am no different. When I offered a simple statement as to what I had observed I was met with nothing but resistance and ranker from the outset, even before any research had been done by anyone. If I don't, my service is promptly being disconnected and I am told to allow it in order for the service to work. What is the correct action to take?     - Does Windows ME support Sony Hi-MD ? Does Windows ME support Sony Hi-MD ? Sony Hi-MD mini disc players can be used for PC data storage of any files - not just music files. But I am having trouble finding out if Windows ME is capable of supporting this - with or without additional drivers or software. The connection is USB, and obviously my PC[s] are USB else there is little point going further. Hi-MD is a recent product - different from Net-MD. As it is so recent, I am wondering if it is XP only. Information not on the Sony web site nor known by my local dedicated Sony store nor Sonys' own product knowledge base while Sony UK technical assistance implied PC end up to myself to sort out. Microsoft knowledge base returns no answers to terms like mini disc or Hi-MD but returns hundreds for just Sony - after wading through headers none some MD relevant.     - WIN ME runs SCANDSK when booting up Must I let this scan run to completion? It is scanning over 1,131,000 sectors and takes forever (days maybe). It states that it is due to a bad system shutdown. I have disabled the power consumption features to not turn off the monitor, hard drive, etc.. I suspect that the pc has some malware but can not copy a2square from a floppy to the hard drive to scan for malware. How do you bootup into SAFE MODE? I tried most of the function keys during bootup to no seccess. Any other ideas short of a full re-store with the COMPAQ restore CD would be appreciated.     - Computer gets sticky I am using Windows ME. I recently had problems with memory, added more memory and this seems to have helped somewhat. Installed a trial version of Tune Up Utilities 2006 and dumped alot of junk from the computer. That helped too. But it seems after surfing a couple of hours, the computer still has a tendency to get slightly sticky and to resolve the problem I usually reboot. Tune Up Utilities tells me that Internet Explorer is taking an unusual amout of memory. Is this normal? Can anyone tell me why Explorer is using so much memory (about 37-39mb) and how to resolve this? All virus scans have been done and there is no trace of a trojan etc. Tune Up Utilities doesn't explain how fix this, they only tell you there is a problem. I even tried disabling the AVG email scanner(which I don't use anyways) but still didn't help. It only seems to get sticky after 2-3 hrs. Thanks for any tips.     - Does the OS Make Mysterious Use of System Restore? Does the Operating System use System Restore (C:\_RESTORE) to correct or improve its performance in some mysterious manner without any request or deliberate action by the user? I've never before had any intentional interaction with the System Restore function of Windows'ME. However, I recently flushed System Restore after discovering I had accumulated over 5 Gigabytes of Restore data since acquiring the system several years ago. I also un-installed my last version of Norton SystemWorks a bit later. Since then, I've noticed significant changes in my system performance. Ever since I've had my Windows'ME driven computer, its had Shutdown problems taking anywhere form a few seconds to more than 20 minutes to shut the power off after blanking the screen. I often just forced it off by holding the power button in for more than 5 seconds. Recently, since the System Restore flushing and un-installation of Norton SystemWorks, the shutdown problem has virtually disappeared. It consistently shuts the power off within a few seconds after blanking the screen. However, it then acquired a problem with incomplete boot-ups requiring use of the Reset Button and Windows Scan Disk to correct it. This went on for a few days. Then, as if it were learning through trial and error, it eventually got it right and for several weeks it's booted up and shut down flawlessly. Does anybody have any insight into what's going on with the mysterious activity of the Operating System and its possible relationship with the System Restore function in correcting or improving its boot-up, shutdown, or general performance (without any inputs from me)? -- randau Oregon, USA I read and post from the Google Groups web site using a Spam collecting email address that I don't use for anything else.     - Corrupt OE Program. Do I need IE OE reinstall? My Outlook Express program has taken ill: My contacts list is gone (message: Address Book failed to load. Outlook Express is incorrectly configured, please re-install.) OE retrieves new messages and I can read inbound messages in the preview pane, but cannot launch the messages. (Message: There was an error opening this message. An error has occurred). Attempting to Create mail generates the same message. I am able to move items between folders and empty my Deleted Items folder, for whatever that's worth. >From browsing these posts, I understand that OE is intimately tied to IE. I am running Internet Explorer 6.00.2800.1106 under Windows ME 4.90.3000. My OE version is 6.00.2800.1123. The OE functions appear to be running fine. Is there any reasonable expectation of being able to cure Internet Explorer in place? Or do I need to wander down the scary path of uninstall/reinstall for IE/OE?     - Quicken Problems I finally am able to read my data disks after using Disk Doctor in Norton System works. I put in all my informtion plus new data and backed it up on a flash drive, as well as disks. Todays as I tried to open Quicken I am getting a new message.     - Can't find "How to" A while back there was a post about making an emergency ME installation cd. I can't seem to locate it. I never recieved an ME installation cd or recovery disk for my ME machine and would like to install ME onto a clean hard drive. Can you steer me in the right direction. From what I can remember, one could burn all cab files, setup.exe from the c:\windows\option\install folder onto cd. One would also need the ME product key and start up floppy.     - USB 2.0 I am posting this info in hope that it get proper attention somehow. Of note are the many complaints of people not getting the expected speed out of their USB 2 device or other problems. What I've found is that many case manufacturers are labeling their cases as USB2 when they have built in ports with header connectors for the MOBO. Two of what appear to be many are Antec and Ultra and they do not meet the requirements of the "USB 2.0 Board" specification. According to the board, such certification is required to legally label, logo, etc it as USB 2.0 The problem is they are not following the requirement for shield grounding, which is to connect to pin 10 of the header. This shielding is to protect the twisted pair carrying the data, CHIRP pulses, from spurious EMI/RMI which can result in re-transmits of the data slowing the overall throughput. Do not confuse the final specification with the Intel preliminary spec. They show pin 10 for over current signalling and there is no mention of that in the final specification. I have found info from sites selling these add-on ports indicating there was also some non-comformity amongst MOBO makers relating to USB1 because they gave the re-pinning instructions for some MOBO's. However, all add-on ports for USB2 that I found to date, whether they used a case PCI slot opening, a drive bay, or required case modding to install and make use of a MOBO header, they did use pin 10 for shield grounding. I don't have equipment to do the necessary testing, but suspect that in at least some USB2 controller designs the unshielded data lines being connected could be adding noise and thus slowing down the overall throughput. The USB 2.0 Board specification is very lengthy and you can read the entire thing to see what is required or you can simply search about shielding and note that a continuous connection of it is required from pin 10 through each connector via the outer metal portion of the connectors. You will also find one exception to the connection requirements, and it was at a termination end device which I remember to be a mouse. That is the length of cable from the mouse is still required to make connection of the shielding via the shell of the connector. That way the mouse cable is not picking up EMI and transmitting via the data lines. It is difficult for me to understand how something as simple as the shielding requirement can be so terribly overlooked by much of the industry. I can pass what I've found to the Board and await top down intervention from them, but that will leave us, the users drowning in the mistakes until all non-compliant hardware is replaced at our expense. Perhaps if we address directly we can get the cables replaced by the manufacturers who didn't comply without having to buy new hardware.     - Noel - Mike: How Office Update Scan Freeze Fixed I started a post here (re-located later) and wore-out Noel's patience with Office Update Scan Freezes and thought I owed you both the "Fix" I learned for the help you've always given. ( IE6 Delete/Re-Install No Help although in each Freeze Cntrl-Alt-Del always showed IE6 Not Responding )- Maybe others will benefit later. Two of us using ESET's NOD32 AV had either my Office Update Scan Freeze OR his Office Update Not Installing. AMON is the File System Monitor Module in the AV and when he discovered to Exclude C:\Windows\Installer from monitoring, my scan completed and his Update loaded. I'm told this Exclusion has Security Issues so I can tell AMON to use the AV Default Scan List of approx. 61 extensions when I'm Scanning Updates rather than "Scan All Files", and the Update Scan completes. At the least you can add another possibility to an "Update Scan Freeze"solution search if NOD32 is mentioned, or if you can figure out if /what common thread this implies for other AV's.     - Adding RAM My 800 MHz, 10 Gig Win Me Compaq Laptop has two 64 MB slots RAM, one of which is non removable. I tried replacing the removable 64 MB with 128 MB but the computer only recognizes 64 MB of the added 128 MB. I have since returned the new RAM but I'm told that I needed to modify the BIOS.     - Finding CD KEY from WinME CD :was help with logo.sys I have lost my Jewel Case CD to my OEM WinME CD. It is a real hologram edge to edge CD. it has 0400 Part No X05-74739. I know how to recover a lost COA number or Jewel case CD Key from a system that is up and running before wiping it and installing if the key has been lost; but I have searched the Microsoft Knowledge base and Googled it, and I can only find where you have to contact Microsoft. The system the WinME was on has been sold and that user bought a retail WinXP Pro and I put it on and they let me keep my WinME OEM CD because they had no use for it. I called the user and they sold the machine long time ago because they wanted a better system then a 1Ghz. I said I would install the WinMe over the weekend and then have the definitive details one way or the other on the logo.sys Vs. sulogo.sys; however without the CD Key I don't see how I am going to be able to install the WinMe on my Spare test/pig machine. Anyone out there know how to, or if it is even possible to pull the cd key from the cd it's self? I sure don't know how to get it from just the original OEM CD and I sure don't feel like sending Microsoft $30 like what it said in one of the knowledge base articles for getting a replacement CD.     - I want to get legal I been using an illegal copy of WinME for years. There are technical reasons I don't want to start using WinXP - I do a lot of hardware tinkering, copying partitions, reloading OS, etc. Besides, WinME really does everything I want to do - I don't need Win XP. I think it's going to be getting harder to get upgrades and patches for WinME because I'm not the registered owner of my copy. I already ran into something that looked like I would have to do extra fooling around and wasting time to get updates for Internet Explorer. I don't want to have to do any extra fooling around when I reload the OS and then download the patches and updates. I've gotten plenty of use from this illegal copy and will be happy to go legal now. I want to get a copy of WinME that I can register. If I buy one on eBay that they say hasn't been registered maybe it's not true - so I get ripped off on the deal. I'm not actually sure what it means: how microsoft keeps track of it, and how they can tell that someone is or isn't the registered user/owner. I would very much like to understand all the finer points about the subject mostly with regard to WinME. I DO know about product activation with WinXP and the system 'fingerprint' it takes when you do it. It's WinME that I don't know about.     - Mouse and Time Function For whatever reason mouse loses its functionality. Wont open desktop icons. No problem though with taskbar icons and start menu.     - Scandisk errors/hard drive problem In several above posts I have problems with IE, explore and BSOD's. When I do scandisk I find some errors related to the time stamp of the files being wrong,boot disk errors and some other erorrs I can't remember.     - Avast vs. System Restore FWIW I would like to make this info available for those whom it may concern. To counteract avast's nasty habit of disabling auto creation of System CheckPoints, do the following: Exit (disable) all running programs in systray, personally I start with Avast, select the Maintenance Wizard in Programs/Accessories/System Tools and choose to 'Perform maintenance now'. Let it do it's job until its finished, shut down and turn it on again. That automaically brings back all of your temporarily disabled programs and as an added bonus created a 'System CheckPoint'. You can elect to do it every two days, once a week, or as often as you like. Personally it satisfies my needs and lets me keep avast, which I happen to like. computer kept resatrting every 3-4 hours or so for no apparent reason
at all. Sometimes when I was online, it would happen sooner. I
formatted my hard disk (only C:) thinking it was a virus problem and
tried installing Xp again. But the PC would restart everytime at a
particular point suring the setup. Tried installing linux, and
encountered the same problem.
Now I cant install any OS on my system, and hence cannot use various
hardware diagnoatic tools either. Cannot be a heating or dust problem
as I had kept the thing open for about a month or two before the
problem began and used to clean it regularly. Not a virus problem
either? Can the presence of viruses on other partitions affect
installation of the OS? Could it be a hard disk problem? Or a RAM
problem? Based on what I have said that is.....i.e, mostly it restarts
at a particular point, and this particular point in time keeps coming
closer to the reboot point as the days and weeks progress. Now it
restarts almost every 5 minutes or so.
And by the way, it doesnt restart if I keep the computer on in the Bios
setup screen or at an early point in Setup (like when it asks you for
format or so..).
Please help as I have a desperate need to use my computer.

My suspicion is that it's a RAM problem -
Such errors are often caused by problems with the RAM - download DocMemory
from www.simmtester.com and create the boot disk. Use this to boot the PC,
and run the test overnight to check the RAM thoroughly.
See what it reports.
