    - standby Hi, I am using a Dell Optiplex Gxa and have a problem using standby. If I chose standby the system goes to standby but starts again at once, I have tried to deactivate all software but it did not help. I am not using any USB device.     - Critical update Q823559 I ran Belarc Advisor and found 3 items that needed to be reinstalled (upd323255, upd811630, & updq823559). No problem with the first two, but I can't get 823559 to install. I checked my installation history on windows update site and found that this particular item failed multiple times back in Aug & Sept 2003, but was finally successful on 9/17/03.     - can't disable system restore???? I have Adaware and Spybot and run them often. I also have a virus scanner. Problem seems to be virus/spyware/etc. in my "restore" folder, so they don't ever get really erased. When I try to turn off system restore to run the virus and spyware programs, it doesn't actually turn off. This is my personal computer and I am the original owner but apparently I am not the "administrator"????     - System error Hi. Since a few days a lot of applications are showing some error regarding kernel32.dll that so and so program caused an error in that dll.Is it possible to replace kernel32.dll? Audio programs like winamp and real are unable to play mp3's and others stating the absence of an audio device when actually there's one.Please also tell me what kind of operations cause these kind of problems.     - Networking Me and XP Hi all, The ol' Me box is now hooked to a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router to my cable modem, along with the new XP box. I have a new Lexmark P6250 printer directly connected to the Me box. Question: Is there a way to share files and printer between the two boxes without opening myself to the 'wilds' of the Net?? I have tried a number of things, to include the Networking Wizard in Me and XP. Me tells me that the networking will work with a Win95 or Win98 box and the XP Wizard warns me that opening file and printer sharing will allow the world to get into my computer/printer. Is this true, since I am behind the router?? Also, I am no longer getting auto System Restore points. I have checked for the presence of a <wininit.ini> file and reset System Restore. It did create a point upon rebooting, but, nothing since I did this two days ago. ZAPro was updated to version 5.5.094.000 about the same time the router and new printer was installed.....may have done too much, too fast, too soon.     - ScanDisk and Bad Sectors After reformatting my HD and reinstalling WinMe with updates I ran ScanDisk. It would not run in the Normal Mode (after many hours it rpoerted that it tried 10 times but something started writing to the drive, according to the message). I then ran in in Safe Mode with a check mark for repairing errors--took well over 24 hours--and it gave me a mystifying report. If says it found no errors. It reported in round numbers 78,000,000 KB total disk space (I have an 80 GB disk) and 8,600,520 bytes in "bad sectors." What does this mean? Is my HD shot? Do I have to fix something? Call Dell?     - Windows Update kills Roxio? I just tried to use my Roxio software to burn a CD. First time I've used it in a month or so. Upon starting Creator Classic I got: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: ...LES\ROXIO\EASY CD CREATOR 6\EASY CD CREATOR\CREATORC.EXE abnormal program termination followed by: Creatorc Creatorc has caused an error in CREATOR.DLL Creatorc will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer. Of course, restarting doesn't help. But upon tracking down CREATOR.DLL I found files by that name in both: C:\Program Files\Adaptec Shared\CreatorAPI\ C:\Program Files\Roxio Shared\CreatorAPI\ The ones in "Adaptec Shared" dated 04\30\05, those in Roxio Shared dated (mostly) 11/26/04. When I saved the ones in "Adaptec Shared" and replaced them with those in "Roxio Shared" the program now starts and runs, though I get the second error above upon exit. Since I haven't run the Roxio update utility for months, I'm assuming the ones in Adaptec Shared came in via Windows Update or, perhaps, when I updated Media Player to version 9. The question is, has anyone else experienced this failure, and do you have a more reasonable, or maybe more complete, way around it than what I've done?     - Recycle bin is missing Hi. I recently turned on my computer and found that the windows Me recycle bin shortcut icon was gone from the desktop. I did a search of files and folders for recycle bin and found nothing. I looked in the windows directory and could not find a folder marked recycle bin. I clicked on properties for the desktop and went to effects,highlited recycle bin full, then clicked on default still no shortcut on the desktop. I tried the same for the recycle bin empty...nothing. How do I find the short cut icon ? If it has been deleted how do I re install it? Is this a common glitch with Me? I didn't think windows would allow the shortcut for Recycle bin to be deleted.     - MSDOS.SYS file missing I'm using MS article Q258471 to troubleshoot a boot problem. The computer only boots into DOS mode, and only if I use a system startup disk. (I get an "Error while initializing device IFSMGR" screen when I boot into Windows.) However, I can't find an msdos.sys file anywhere on the disk, including the %RootDir%. I have a second WinMe computer that doesn't have an msdos.sys file either, all though that system boots fine. I read that msdos.sys is created during the Windows installation process. What would cause the msdos.sys file to be missing from both of my WinME systems? And, if it's necessary to boot into Windows, why does one of my computes boot without it? Can an msdos.sys file be created manually? If so, how? Is there some way to retrieve a copy from somewhere else, or extract it from the installation disk? Tag: Communication Questions Tag: 266125

    - missing components in Windows Setup I've noticed when in the "windows setup" from the add\remove section that there are no components(empty) listed at all.     - spool32 error I've looked at other methods to fix this, but they don't seem to apply or work. First off, I installed a new HP printer and shortly after that I would get error messages such as: Spool32 has caused an error in KERNEL.dll or Spool32 has caused an error in <unknown>. I uninstalled my old printers drivers, didn't help. Booted up in safe mood/clean boot and even then I would often get the spool32 error box to show up. I went into my spool folder and found nothing in the PRINTERS folder. I cleaned out the TEMP folder. Still getting the same error on startup. I can't print if I close the error box that shows up on startup. The error box shows up when I want to open my Printers folder in my Control Panel. I've tried printing directly to the printer. I've ran out or tried just about all the possible solutions I have seen. The error box shows up everytime I boot and am ready to use my PC. Thanks in advance for your help.     - Comm port invalid or busy HELP! I've tried almost everything listed on these message boards to resolve my comm port problem. I have Windows XP. AOL 9.0. I use my modem for dial-up when away from home. It runs (or used to) on comm port 3. I use broadband at home. Until last week, both dial-up and broadband worked fine. Then, all of a sudden, I couldn't dial-out anymore...receiving the dreaded message "com port invalid or busy". I haven't added new hardware or software. Broadband still works fine. I've checked all my devices for conflicts and/or problems. All are fine. I've uninstalled the Toshiba modem, and reinstalled. Modem diagnostics say it's working fine. Changed serialkey settings.     - Scandisk/defragmentation I did a scan disk in safe mode and it seems to stop 1/4 mark, so I decided I will do deframentration then, Initially, the defragmentation process is ok until it give this error message "Window cannot defrag this drive bcos it cannot access part of drive. To repair your drive, click scandisk (choose thorough option) and try defragmentation again. ID# Defrag005" So I try to do the scasndisk and it would even start. So I power off the button and restart. Since it did not shut down the proper manner, it usually try to scan the disk which it again did not start and give this message" Msgsrv32 has caused an error in KRNL.386.exe. Msgsrv32 will now close. If you continue to experience the problem, try restarting your pc." Hdd Masxtor 40 gb, model 34098H4.     - microtrend-page cannot be display properly This Millinnium pc has never been updated before, Thought doi an on line scan first and when I try to download the housecall definitions, its says the page cannot be display properly because of the setting. the is a cross in a small box on the page.     - Desktop has gone black I don't know if this was caused by a virus or not but my wallpaper has gone and my desktop is completely black. It still has icons and they work. When I right click on the desktop I no longer get the popup menu I used to get. I get a simple one allowing me to select a screensaver and size settings. I cannot select wallpaper and my active desktop options are gone. Does anyone know what files might be corrupt and need replacing? Any other ideas would be appreciated.     - Problem with Floppy drive I'm having a problem my A:\ or my floppy drive. I am trying to access delindex via a floppy disk and when inserted into the drive on reboot, the computer disregards whatever is in the floppy drive and continues to boot into windows. Once in windows I would right click on floppy drive icon and then click onto explore, and an error message stating "A:\ is not accessible. The system cannot read from the specified device". I would then try to run scandisk on the A:\ drive with more errors stating "Scandisk detected an error while reading your drive. Scandisk detected an error while writing to your drive". The computer would then freeze. I've tried using different floppies and also tried to update the floppy disk controller from device manager to no avail.     - New power supply needed Was in the process of installing wireless card to winME. System has been disconnected/no power for sometime due to office renovation.     - NTLDR is missing !! Please help Ok, My sons computer won't boot I keep getting the NTLDR is missing press any key to restart. So I go through support on the web and obviously I need a Windows/ME boot disk. Well I don't have one and I can't open the cd rom either because of the problem.     - Control Panel is Empty Hi All, I have a Toshiba 2800 with win me. when i open the control panel, the window is empty however, in the bottom left corner it tells me there are items but I cannot see them. The same occurs when i click on my computer, i see the floppy and cd and c drive, but when i click on the c drive, i get an empty window and again it says in the bottom corner, xx items. what's wrong with my ME? No, when I try to run three different programs, I am getting the error message, "A requrired DLL file, MFC42.dll, was not found." I know there are websites that will provide DLL files.     - Dial-Up Connection using BY Yahoo! Anytime and BTBBroadband My internet connection on BT Yahoo Anytime unsing Connexant HSSF V92 56K RTAD Speakerphone Modem on COM3 was faultfree. When I tried to transfer to BT Basic Broadband sing BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem my Standard Dialup was transferred to BT PayasyouGo Dial Up which I intended to use as a back-up of Broadband failed. On trying to install BT Broadband I continually found "Dial Up Modem not found". Whenever I tried to connect to Broadband the low speed dia; up mem was connected instead even thoughthe BT Broadband was "default". In the end I got BT Broadband connected by removing the Dial-Up from the Control Panel. The connection worked until the computer was shut down when the Broadband connection would fail and the only way to restore it was to insert the BT Broadband CD and run the dslsetup.exe and reinstall thje Voyager Drivers over the old ones. The powered up reboot could be used without trouble. I then restored the Dial-Up to the Control Panel after uninstalling the BT PayasyouGo. Once again the system worked correctly but I now lose the Broadband connection (if try to connect get "Dial-Up modem not found") and can only restore by rerunning dslsetup.exe. Please advise: 1. How to obtain connection which will maintain the computer on BT Basic Broadband after both rebooting and repowering computer. 2. How to still have a backup low speed connection of Broadband fails. After install a spy/adware removal progam, everything is fine UNTIL, the last 1 % of the removal process. the comp restarts, has a blue screen with the usual 2 options, " press any key or ctrl+alt+del..." however this was not suppose to happen. had to completely shut down the power to the unit in order to do anything. when i'd press "any key" it'd go back to the "LOOP". when i'd press "ctrl+alt+del" it'd go back to the "LOOP". plus have the following error message 0E : 0197 : BFF7834F. I know this is not a lot to those that have 100GB+ drive but when you have only 20GB, it's a big deal. Since then I have been watching this particular folder and I am wondering if I could get a bit of insight about the files. I am currently running the following: Win Me 4.90.3000, IE 5.50.4807.2300 with my trusty Outlook Express. My startups are ZA 2.6.362, Spyblocker 5.0 and AVG 7.0.308. In my restore/archive folder, as of 04/29/2005, I have FS1.cab through FS9.cab and RG42682079.cab through RG4272378c.cab. These files total 152MB. I flushed this folder 04/21/2005. My questions. 1. What do the FS and RG zip files represent? 2. Should I be generating these files in this way at this pace? 3. Do I need to reset some switches and if so which ones?     - Windows Me freezes up while connected to internet I have Windows ME, IE and Mcafee and all is updated. For a little over one week now, almost every time I am online doing anything, after about 10-15 minutes, everything locks up. Ctr, Alt, delete will work some times but the majority of the time it does nothing. Only option is turn off computer and then scan disk for errors when turned back on. This may have started right after an update for IE or Mcafee. I am just not sure. It does seem that it happens more when I am connected to internet than just doing offline work. But it did do it when I tried to do a system restore. When came back on, had error message that it was unable to restore. When tried to restore again, no dates were shown on calendar.     - AltGr key doesn't work in an MS-DOS window I've just performed a new install of the U.S. version of the Windows Me Promotional Step-Up under MS Virtual PC 2004 SP1. I'm using a French National ("AZERTY") keyboard. I'm trying to get the French keyboard layout recognized in an MS-DOS window. I tried following the instructions in MSKB 261417 -- I launched MSCONFIG.EXE, clicked on the International tab, set the Keyboard Layout to "fr", and rebooted, but this had no effect. The keyboard under MS-DOS retained the U.S. layout. To get the French layout partially recognized under MS-DOS, I found that the Language ID had to be set to "fr", the Country Code had to be set to 33, and the Keyboard Data File Name had to read "keyboard.sys" (without the path). Per MSKB 272719, including the full path prevented the new layout from being recognized. AFAICT, the following fields had no effect: MS-DOS Code Page, Country Data File Name, Display Data File Name, Keyboard Type, and Keyboard Layout. However, no matter how I configure the International tab, the AltGr key (the right-Alt key) still does not work and I have no access to such characters as the backslash (AltGr + 8) or the at-sign (AltGr + 0) in the MS-DOS window. Of course, I can fall back to using the Alt key codes or copy and paste from Character Map, but this is quite cumbersome.     - Startup Window (DOS) Always Boots Recently I had to chase a virus using safe mode. Norton gave a couple of options for getting to safe mode and I chose to take the "msconfig/system configuration utility/advanced/check enable Startup Menu" route.. It worked, I got to Safe Mode and the virus was dispatched. I rebooted and unchecked the "enable Startup Menu". On reboot I still get the DOS menu with the options to "1. Normal.....3..SafeMode etc...." I then followed Norton to Microsoft help and found my msdos.sys file. It did not have an entry for "BootSafe=1" that I could change to "BootSafe=0". So I added that line, "BootSafe=0" at the top (I think). But it still goes to the black and white menu on boot up and I still have to choose "Normal" to finally boot to the WinMe screen. A1. Remember, Phone Dialer is a 'dialler' not a call handler! - Once the
called party has answered, use an adjacent standard 'telephone' to speak and
then immediately 'disconnect' (hang up) your Phone Dialer and continue your
call using the adjacent phone. (N.B. *Some* modems will allow speech -
usually by setting a code in its Properties - but many don't!! - see your
modem's User Guide - if supplied <g>)

A2. Yes - but messy - Use HyperTerminal (Programs | Accessories |
Communications | HyperTerminal. (But you *may* find it easier to simply use
email attachments in Outlook Express <g>)

What happend when you scanned using the McAfee Command Line Scanner for the "Downloader-ZQ"
that was found in the executable; wi32.exe ?

What were the results ?

Did you run this before your ran HiJackThis (HJT) ? What caused you to run HJT ?
