Downloaded the latest Windows Update security patch (867801) and my computer
had a non-stop series of errors.....Msgxxx that shut down IE....Java had a
problem and shut down IE....screens kept freezing and general bad behaviour.

Did a system restore within a few minutes of this odd behaviour and all is
now fine. Nothing else had been changed and I just restored back 4 hours.

Maybe see if anyone else has any problems??? That was the Cumulative Update
one.

Cheers.....Heather

No problem here, Figgs. DirectX9.0c is fine too, on the Intel box.

On the Athlon box I've got problems, seemingly from the latest NVidia
drivers and/or DirectX9.0c. But I doubt you have either of those, eh? <g>
About half and half blue screening and *<whatever> has caused an error
in.....* (d'you know, I'm so tired I can't remember *in what*!). Even System
Restore is giving errors.

So haven't got round to installing 867801 on the Athlon box.

You haven't installed the Yahoo toolbar again, have you, Figgs?
:)

No problems here on my XP box - but I haven't got either ME box in a fit
state to update at present, so I can't help.

I installed on win2k, now a real pain. Many Apps inc IE,explorer now slow to
respond. Even takes 15 sec to exit my screen saver, default win2k saver,
This is the first ms update that has given a problem

Thank you!! I forgot to mention that my browser was really slow and I kept
getting 404's......or the like. Couldn 't pull up a lot of websites that I
normally do. I had so many things going wrong after d/l'ing that patch that
I forgot to mention that.

Btw.....the errors were *immediate* once I downloaded the patch. Not even 2
minutes later......so had to be that. Don't have any now. Touch wood!!

Think it is time to put XP on here, grin. But have a lot to back up first.

Sigh......Figgs

You may have been *righter* than you realized. Found some instances of
*#Plus Yahoo* under ApplicationData/Macromedia/Flashplayer, but they were
from July 14th, not yesterday.

Did a search for *toolbar* and I found a folder under Programs called
Google.....traces of that blasted thing left from when I thought I removed
it. It is now in the Trash Bin. Didn't touch the Flash Yahoo ones yet tho.

Sneaky blasted things!!!! I will have a read thru the "wonderful new
software" that Rogers is touting and see if #Plus Yahoo is in there.

And I have a question I will post separately for this fellow that seems to
have a browser hijacker yet we can't find it........(Mow et al)

Cheers...Heather

That update didn't require a Re-Boot? Personally, I haven't istalled the
latest Q'# that you mentioned, but most of the security updates require a
re-boot to install "fully". If you experienced errors without a reboot,
maybe that's why?

Got the errors without a reboot......but got different ones after I
rebooted. So you are right on that score, but normally I don't reboot right
away. With this one you have to.

Outch! In that case, I'll stay away from that "update". Incidentally, if
you read the details of the 867801 update, you will note that they recommend
that WinME w/IE 5.5 users read a special note about it:

"Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 for Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Prerequisites --- To install the Internet Explorer 5.5 version of this
update, you must be running Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (version
5.50.4807.2300) on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Note: Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 is currently supported on Windows Millennium
Edition (Me) only. For more information on support for Internet Explorer 5.5
SP2 please see the following Microsoft Product Lifecycle page. Windows Me is
currently in Extended Support. Please see the following announcement for
more information on support for Windows Me"

There are special "prerequisites" for WinME and IE 6 too.

Figgs ... did you get the update from Windows Update or download and
install it manually from the MS Download Center ?
Seems the update from WU has a "problem" replacing 2 files ....
mshtml.dll and shlwapi.dll
Give the MS Download Center a try :
IE 6 SP1 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=06F49985-F19F-4B50-A75F-7636D8BEE576&displaylang=en
IE 5.5 SP 2 :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E458480C-93F6-454A-A663-FC187C18CD9B&displaylang=en

IE 6 is for Win ME is available ONLY on WU ( yuck ).

Maybe that explains the dialog box error message from Microsoft Internet
Explorer, which I encountered after the installation of the download. It
also prevented the automatic restart; I had to complete it manually, which
included the perverbial disk scan. After that everything was fine(ssimo).
Hope you get your problem fixed, Heather.

Harry.

AHA!!! So I wasn't wrong after all, grin!! I got it from Windows Update,
soon after I got the notification. Sometimes *naivete* pays off.

I got a lot of errors and did a restore, but my computer has now settled
down I think. Hadn't had any of those *IE has caused an error in
KERNEL32.DLL* notifications for a long time.

I will go to the Download Centre (note Cdn spelling, lol) and see.
