Last night I get a call they my cousin's computer is hosed. Stinkin'
teenagers... they'll download and click on anything.
Ay any rate when shutting down, I get this:
http://img463.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img00195zg.jpg

I am going to upgrade them to Windows XP Home - its been ordered. But
for now I have to get this heap working ASAP. The other problem was
that it constantly booted into Safe mode and/or The Active desktop
recovery mode. Now that the PC is here It just won't switch to a
higher resolution.
I don't have the original Windows ME CD... You know how kids are.
Any options?
This is a Gateway PC and this is indeed a legal copy of ME.

Boot to Safe Mode and uninstall KB891711 using Add/Remove Programs, boot
back into Normal Mode and then go to the Windows Update site and download
the updated version of KB891711 and all the other more recent updates that
might not have been installed.

Done...

now I have ANOTHER problem. The PC will not shut down correctly. All
I see is a black screen with a dos cursor in the upper right hand
corner.

God damn Win ME is a peice of shit... I have been dealing with clients
using this garbage for the past five years and when there's no other
recourse I have them go back to 98.
SOmebody must have been on crack when ME was designed. Even in 1999
this OS was trash.

Not at all although the PC you are working with may well be. However
given your prejudice I see little point in responding further.

No, but you may well be. Win Me was by far the best of the Win 9x
systems. Rock solid and with few problems for many with its main failing
being the lack of drivers for older hardware and of course few drivers for
more modern hardware released since Win Me was marketed. Of course NT
based systems are far better than Win Me having a much more stable core
and not having to make do with the backward compatibility built in to Win
Me that can be the cause of several problems.

You're right... There is little point in responding further. I posted
this problem on a tech board and everyone agreed ME was the worst OS
ever. So you're outvoted ont hat one.
The PC is fine. The hard drive checked out.
No, Win ME is NOT more stable. I don't know where you're getting that
from. Coming from experrience WinME was generally the root of every
problem I've encountered, where it was in the equation.

Oh, by the way... after killing everything in the task list, it still
hangs up on shutdown. So no, its not a program its the OS itself.

The Task Manager shows VERY FAR FROM ALL the programs running on the PC -
suspect your AV!

May I respectfully disagree with your assessment of WinME, Justin?
I have experienced my share of problems, but they were 99% of the time due
to my own mishandling of the system and not fully understanding its
workings.
All those who tell you otherwise, don't know enough and surely a lot less
than Mike, who knows it inside out in detail.
Off course, you are entitled to your own opinion, which doesn't mean it has
to be the right one.
Have a nice day.

Harry.

I suggest you have a look here then,
"Windows Shutdown & Restart Centre - Troubleshooting In 15 Steps"
http://www.aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm
and I don't agree with your statement regarding WinME I found it to be
very stable and it is still going strong even though my daughter and her
boyfriend now use it.

Justin:
I fully agree with Mike, Webster72n, Noel and Joan Archer: Win Me has
served me well for the last 5 years. But like everything else, treat it with
respect and it will do its job.

Don't blame the OS, Justin. Blame the user and lack of proper care,
maintenance and setup.
