Scandisk gets interrupted
When I run scandisk on my Windows ME computer, I get a
message telling me that another program is writing to my

Slow Startup with Windows ME
My Dell Windows ME computer takes a long time (> 5 min)
to startup. A scandisk window always pops up, with the
message that windows did not properly shutdown during the
previous session. Sometimes the computer will hang
during the startup. Once I get through a successful
start, the computer runs reasonably well as long as I
have scanned for viruses and adware. Any suggestions? Tag: Can't repair Internet Explorer Tag: 246768
Directx
I recently got a webcam and software prompted me to
download latest version of Directx. I downloaded from
Microsoft.com but for some reason the download failed so I
tried again. This time the download seemed to work but
the installation failed and now has failed every single
time I try. I can send video and audio through Netmeeting
but I cannot receive video or audio. I think the two
issues are related. I have Windows ME, my ISP is AOL and
I use a dial up 56k modem. Please help!! Tag: Can't repair Internet Explorer Tag: 246764
Sytem Tray Items
I have many programs (and need to have them there) in system tray, which causes a shorter (annoying)

Is there any free program which will manage my tray items (as we can in Win XP). Hides the inactive

Links in Browsers
When we hover the mouse on a link in browsers (IE, Crazy Browser, MYIE) their URL address is shown
in status bar of that browser. Problem is that some part of it hides behind other status bar item so
we are not sure about the link's target (specially when downloading an item, whether this click will
take us to this item's further details or it will start downloading). I know some pages mention it
clearly but some pages specially free download site have this problem. If this is sorted out we can
easily know whether this will be a item's detail page or we can add that link to our dl manager
straight away.
The problem persist in both Online and Offline
In ONLINE when we click a download link it starts downloading through explorer while I always prefer
dl manager (safer on DUN - no threats of disconnection etc).
In OFFLINE we first paste that link to clipboard to verify for a legit downloadable link than add to
dl manager.
I use getright
Any ideas/tips

Cloning Hard Drive
I've used Norton Ghost to clone my 32G Western Digital
hard drive to a new 160G Samsung drive. I have several
partitions for Windows ME, programmes and data. I've used
Ghost successfully in the past to clone my drive to
another 32G drive, but I thought I could use a larger
drive to install different OS's, including XP.
After removing the 32G drive and reconnecting the new one,
I can sometimes boot into ME, but I get all sorts of
intermittent DLL error messages and memory faults when I
try to run several programmes, including Windows Explorer.
Also, after rebooting, I've started to get a red screen
telling me that the boot anti virus cannot initialise.
I've wiped the disk clean and done a clean XP install,
which works fine, so I know it's not the new drive.
Can anyone tell me if there are known issues with cloning
ME to larger hard drives? By the way, the Bios of my m/b
(Aopen AX63Pro) only recognises 136G of the new drive. Tag: Can't repair Internet Explorer Tag: 246743

Reformatting!
Background:
After frustrating but minor problems with a temp file, I
foolishly deleted far more than I should have, including
temporary files that I now realise were probably
important.
Then Windows wouldn't start properly, even in safe mode.
(There's an invalid page fault in Shell32.dll, among other
things.) System restore won't work because it doesn't get
past loading up Windows. ScanDisk, run from DOS, kept
finding things wrong, and fixing them, but it still won't
let me reinstall Windows from the boot disk and CD-ROM
because it says there are still errors on the hard disk.
Two questions:
Are there any options apart from reformatting the hard
disk?
Will anything bad happen if I reformat the hard disk?
Thank you.

Serial port virtualizer
All,
I'm looking for a windows and Linux driver that will support up to 128
virtual serial ports, but use TCP/IP to communicate between 2 computers.
One box is Linux and will have a program that receives commands from
the serial ports and sends data in response. This box simulates actual
hardware.
The other box is Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP and runs the client program that
can communicate with up to 128 of these devices. It would have up to
128 virtual serial ports and connect to the simulator via TCP/IP.
Anyone know of software that does this? Couldn't find any so far.
An alternative approach is running everything on the Windows box (and
adding a monitor to see both programs running). There are serial port
virtualization programs for Windows, with a cost of $100 to about $250.
I thought there was a freeware project to do this, but I can't find it
either. Anyone know if it exists any longer?
Thanks for any helpful on-topic information.

"svchost.exe" in Windows ME
Hi,
I just got rid of a Trojan horse, so every time I sit down
at my computer, I check the start up files in msconfig to
make sure the Trojan is gone for good.
During one of these checks, I found a brand new
file "svchost.exe" which according to the time stamp, was
installed while my wife was viewing pictures she had
received via email. She never installs anything
intentionally - she leaves that to me.
I began an info hunt and found that "svchost.exe" is a
common file on Windows XP and is also a file installed by
the "W32.Welchia.Worm."
Searched the Microsoft web site and could not find any
reference for "svchost.exe" on Windows ME - just on XP.
Downloaded Symantec fix for "W32.Welchia.Worm" and ran it.
However, it reported that the worm is not on my computer.
To be on the safe side, I renamed "svchost.exe" and moved
it. It is still on my msconfig start up list, but is
deselected. My computer seems to be running quite well.
So... I'd like to know how "svchost.exe" got on my system
in the first place, do I need it or should I get rid of it
completely? I'd appreciate any help.

Internet Explorer vs. Firefox?
A general question:
Several sources recommend on the internet to switch from Microsoft's
Internet Explorer to Mozilla's Firefox, because of its much safer features,
especially where hackers gaining access is concerned and Microsoft being
slow in creating
defensive software.
What is the consensus in this NG?
I did try Firefox without eliminating IE but didn't like it as much, besides
incurring some minor problems.
Therefore I uninstalled within days.
Right now they are talking about something that hides itself from being
detected, even though it doesn't seem to be very harmful or it even being
beneficial.
As of right now I am quite satisfied with the performance of my IE. Should I
be concerned at all?
Harry.

New HDD and OS
I am fitting a new hard disk to my PC as a replacement for the original.
I wish to run win ME. The PC is an HP Pavilion and came with a Win 98
'recovery' cd. Along the way I have upgraded to Win ME with a non-OEM Win
ME 'upgrade' CD. I have all the necessary product keys and documentaion
still with both cd's. The product ID for the 98 cd includes the string -
OEM-.
My question is .... can I load ME directly onto the new HDD, and use the
'recovery' cd as proof of purchase ? OR, do I have to load Win 98, then
upgrade to Win ME, and will 98 load direct from the 'recovery' cd onto a
completely bare HDD ?
I could ghost an image of my current HDD and simply swap drives, but I
would prefer a fresh start as the PC has already done 4 years on 98
without a reformat or reload and I keep hearing that Win98 registry will
be in a dismal way.
Thanks for the advice.

What is this character...?
What is this character and how do you type it in DOS...?
>> £ <<
I downloaded a game tonite, didn't like it, and tried to delete it.
It wasn't a standard install, and had no uninstall...you just delete the folder.
(OK it was a cracked game with no install...just an unpack...please...no lectures...just help please...)
While trying to empty the recycle bin, it said it couldn't find some weird named file, and wouldn't let me empty it.
I went into the game folder, and started deleting folders one by one.
I got to a folder with what appeared to be some sort of texture files, with a crapload of 'em in there.
They looked like they had the same sort of name as what the recycle bin wouldn't delete.
So I started deleting them, column by column...one by one...
till I got to two of them that just won't delete.
When I try to delete them, move them, rename them, change the properties...I get this error message...
"Cannot Delete File
Windows is unable to find the file.
This item might have already been deleted or moved.
Press F5 to refresh the view of this folder."
I refreshed, rebooted, rebooted and tried in safemode...
Ran my antivirus and adware/spyware progs...
NOTHING makes these two files go away, and windows is saying it can find them...
WTF...???
So I did some reaserch on the net, and I read that you need to delete it in DOS.
I don't know DOS...but seem to remember this happening a few yrs. ago, and someone talking me thru a "deltree" (?) in DOS.
So I got like C:>DEL Foldername\filename.extension...
but the filename has that damned weird symbol/character typed above in it's name that I don't know how to type.
(I had to copy and paste t from the actual filename.)
Anyone up and awake out there...?
Please help...???
Thanks!
