    - Having shutdown problems Hi group! When I shutdown the computer, it shuts down like it is supposed to. When I boot it back up, sometimes a blue screen comes up saying that the system is busy and waiting for the close dialog box to display which it never does. When this happens, I can not reboot with ctrl/alt/del, I have to manually turn the computer off and on with the power button on the pc. Then when it reboots, it automatically goes into scan disc.     - startup won't go past Windows ME screen My Windows ME laptop will no longer start up. Powering up, I get to the white Windows ME screen, but no farther. If i hit escape, a black screen appears that says "Please wait while Setup updates your configuration files. This may take a few minutes..."     - run vs open or edit I wrote a batch file that worked for months. I must have changed something when I right-clicked on it to edit it one day. I probably left the tick in "Always open with this program." Now instead of running the batch it always opens in Notepad. .BAT isn't in the list of File Types under Folder Options so I can't correct this there.     - Another Read-Only Issue I just had to do a complete system re-install. The OS, applications and peripherals all seem to be working perfectly. My issue is that when I try to copy all my files (mainly spreadsheets, word docs and photos) from the back-up CDs I created before the re-install process, everything (folders and files) shows up in Windows Explorer as read-only. Files also have that designation when opened in their respective applications. How can I get my folders and files so they appear "normally?" I am not sure if the earlier post about read-only issues also answers my question and I was reluctant to try it because I don't know enough to fool around with registry settings unless I absolutely have to. Also, will I have to recopy all my files from the back-up CDs or will the above solution, or any new one, automatically fix all the read-only files I have already transferred? Thanks for the help!     - Convert a Drive Can Fat16 be converted to FAT32 under WinME? And if so, with Windows ME installed on it, is this done without formatting? In the Instructions only Win98 and Win98SE are mentioned as being applied to. The DOS Command is: "cvt C:cvt", where C is the drive to be converted.     - XP SP2..... Help!! I am trying to get this computer organized to put XP on here and Mike suggested that I should download SP2 before I do. I can't find it anywhere......except as a Windows Update to XP. In other words, it seems that I cannot download it unopened to burn it to a CD unless I already have XP on here. Is this correct? Still have a couple of things to do before putting XP on, but thought I would ask. And a segue here.......a friend has just bought a laptop with XP on it and it has SP2......I was looking for the free EZ Armor download on the MS site and came across a list of AV proggies that get screwed up by SP2....and EZ Armor is one of them. Any suggestions? AVG?? And I am pretty sure the firewall is enabled in SP2.....but should I tell her to download ZA?? Questions.......and no time. I am running as fast as I can, grin!! I won't even list the rest of mine.....heh heh. One more.....should I bother with the last 2 critical updates to WinME? I am using Firefox 99% of the time anyway.     - IE6SP1 Download Question Sometimes when I an on a web page click on a download link in Internet Explorer, it automatically starts downloading to Temporary Internet Files instead of giving me a choice where to save the file.     - Why do I need WBEM? I have a freeware program named Beta 10 that allows me to remove such unneeded modules as Windows Media Player 6, Windows Scripting host and I also notice, WBEM (Web Based Enterprise Management.) Can anybody tell me if there's a reason I shouldn't remove that module? I use this computer at home and unnetworked. I have a fiber optic cable connection.     - USB Problem I have a digital camera that uses a USB port. This has worked fine until I took my computer into get fixed. Now, the camera won't respond to the computer. I've checked the camera manual but there were no answers there. What I've noticed though is that in System Properties -> Device Manager, there is no USB listed, where I think there should be.     - Browser Time Out I have broadband and can connect to the internet for about 10 minutes. After that any attempt to go to a different webpage "times out".     - Unable to burn CD's I have ME and am unable to burn CD's from my MP 7. The following message - 'Adaptec Easy CD Creator Plugin' states - 'No CD Recording Device Detected'. Microsoft MP7 Release also states - 'If tou are running Adaptec programs and you install Adaptec Plugin as part of your WMP install, direct CD will no longer work'. I have Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.0. Can anyone tell me how to fix this or alternatively, if I upgraded to WMP 9 or 10 would this enable me to burn Cd's direct from my Playlist still using Adaptec with ME: and would all my music in the Library remain unaffected?     - CD Drives Missing in Windows Explorer I am having an issue with my CD drives not showing up in Windows Explorer on my initial boot up. I have an AMD Duron 1000 running Windows ME. When I initially boot up the machine in the morning the two CD drives (actually a DVD player drive and a CD-RW drive) do not show up in Explorer). In the Device Manager I get a yellow exclamation point next to the Secondary IDE Controller in my Hard Disk Controllers. However when I reboot the machine all is well.     - Repairing ME - Part 2 This a continuation of my earlier post - Repairing ME. On monday I booted up in Safe Mode. I got an error message from Helpctr stating that it had caused an error in MSHTML.DLL. This DLL appeared more than once afterward. I closed the window without any problem and completed the boot. I opened Device Manager and removed the Toshiba CD-ROM drive. There were no error-flagged devices. "Other" contained two unknown devices. I removed them. I rebooted in Normal Mode. Eventually I got the usual error message "Explorer has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL." I closed the window, and of course it came back again and again. I couldn't get past it. This error stopped the boot. There was a second error window: Run time error. "Component MSCOMCTLOCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid" I was able to close this window without further effect. Of course the Explorer error message returned. I rebooted in Safe Mode and got that Helpctr error message. I closed it and did something I should have done two weeks ago. I tried to run System Restore. Eventually I got an error message from System Restore: " Rstrui has caused an error in MSHTML.DLL. Helpctr will now close." I couldn't get any further with System Restore. That was perhaps a pity because there is a hidden Restore folder on drive C. I rebooted in Safe Mode. I had recently down loaded Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE Personal and installed them. I ran Spybot. It found some items. I had them removed. This did not complete. The program seemed to have hung. I closed it, which I now think I shouldn't have done. Right after this the Explorer problem began. I rebooted and ran Spybot and Ad-Aware. They both found items. Ad-Aware found over 300 items. I removed all of them and rebooted in Normal Mode. Nothing had changed. The error messages popped up and the boot was dead. I rebooted in Safe Mode and got the error message from Helpctr. Thinking that installation of these programs and WiZ, also a recent download, may have caused problems, I went to Add/Remove Software and removed the anti-spyware programs. I had to remove WiZ manually. Nothing changed and I began to regret removing these three programs. I should note that the Sophos virus checker runs on boot-up. I has never found anything. The subscription is out-of-date. Since we can't access the Internet, there is no way to update it online On thursday I plan to borrow a PC with a floppy drive. (I don't have a floppy drive at home.) It runs Windows XP Professional. I will download Diskmaker, Stinger, the CWShredder files and Ad-Aware SE Personal to diskettes and install and run them, hopefully on friday. (I hope that each of them will fit on a single floppy.) I may download Spybot S&D. It says it backs up the registry before scanning.     - Can't Install Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 I am running Windows ME and Internet Explorer Version 5.50.4134.0100. Windows Update is telling me that there is a service pack to be installed on my system -- but it relates to Internet Explorer and is called "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (Windows 98, Windows ME)". Perhaps this is the Service Pack that Mark D. in the "can't install service packs" post below is having trouble with. I am certainly having trouble with it, although I don't get an error code like the one Mark gets. The update seems to download on my computer, but fails every time on install.     - DUN can't access certain web sites!!? Anyone, Is there a DNS service in Windows ME, or anything else mysterious, that could cause certain web sites never to load? I use dial up to my local ISP, and no one else has this problem with our ISP. For example, I can never connect to Hotmail.com, cnn.com, etc., but can connect to many other sites just fine.     - stumped??? need a little help, i have a 6.4 gig hd that had me on it, upgraded the hd to a 80 gig for me so i decided to use the 6.4 gig for a small private server. formatted the hd format c: then set it as a slave drive, when i now boot up it says non system disk please insert original disk or press any key, if i press any key it goes into windows ok & shows the 6.4 drive, i tried formatting the hd format c:/s but it will not let me boot up to the c drive if i mount the drive. any ideas, it does work because people can download files from it. da.     - Re: Heather Hello Heather: Knowing that you are an advocate of EZArmor, I would like your opinion on whether to go back to EZAntivirus and EZFirewall, which I had lost and now retrieved the exe. files, or keep the AVG Antivirus and Sygate Firewall, which were installed for immediate protection. EZArmor requires uninstalling any other Antivirus Software, before using it. I must say that I like AVG & Sygate quite a lot. What's the verdict? Harry, old and would prefer it both ways.     - freeze ups and more I'm having several problems. I've had several lock ups when I double click MY COMPUTER, internet download has slowed down drastically, most download files have failed to finish, sometimes one or the other disc drive will lock up, and many problems with internet browsing. Now I've had a couple of lock ups on shut down. All of these seem to be getting worse and more frequent. I've check for adware and such by two different programs, checked for viruses, deleted cookies & all temp file, and defraged the drive. Memory is 90% free.     - Printer/scanner not working Can anyone help please. My scanner connected to LPT1 stopped working. Computer ceased to recognise it and when accessing the Twain driver it just juddered until it was switched off. I have replaced this with a borrowed USB scanner which works fine but the printer which was connected thru the scanner has now stopped working. Windows keeps saying it is 'off line'. It only works when connected via the old scanner and the scanner is turned on (this previously wasn't necessary)and not when connected direct to the computer. I have tried reinstalling the driver.     - Windows Logon Missing Hello. I am running Windows ME. I did a reinstall to correct a midi problem. This worked, but created a new problem. I no longer get a logon box at startup. I have researched this extensively and taken all the steps I have found suggested. I believe I have all the basic setups correct and assume it is a registry issue. I have used the following in control panel: Passwords to enable different user settings; Users to set up different user profiles and Network to add the Microsoft Family Logon Client and select it as primary logon. I have tried removing all this, deleting all .pwl files and selecting Windows Logon to see if I could get a basic logon -- no go.     - Windows Explorer crash Windows Explorer stop responding after is senses a connection on the onboard NIC. I have removed the drivers (Intel Pro 100) and install them again. I have disabled the onboard card and installed a Cardbus NIC with the same results. History: The computer was working fine until I tried installing a Dlink DWL-G650 wireless network card. I have removed all hardware and applications that is associated with the card. I have rolled the registry back to a date prior to the Wireless NIC install with the same results.     - Problem with no icons appearing on desktop The desktop image is displayed, but when you go to Task manger (ctrl,alt,del one time) nothing appears. Booted into Safe Mode and samething. Any ideas? This is on a laptop and occured after the user had been browsing the Internet. Again nothing but the desktop image shows up on the desktop and right clicking produces no screen properties.     - Unable to create bootup floppy Greetings. Working on my sister's machine Pavilion 7840 766Mhz 64MB RAM WinME, I have everything working, updated, and startup preferences set. I wish to make a full backup on CDR(W) for the 6GB of used space. Reading somewhere, I should have a floppy boot disk created to get the CD-ROM drives recognized to be used to reinstall the backup. Attempting such, I get a list of files not found with the extension of .ebd. Searching manually on the restoration disks and hard drive, I can only find a folder under Windows named EBD but the extensions are mostly .sys. Can anyone tell me where to find these files? If I could find a backup program that creates a bootable CD, that would eliminate the need of a floopy boot disk, right? But I wouldn't feel good about giving this machine back knowing it can't make a floppy boot disk. I'd appreciate some advise on this. Thank you!     - Virus & Spyware trouble Problem with my daughter's Sony (ME) notebook, she used AOL, now the computer is about useless. I ran AVG anti-virus, ad-aware, & cwshredder. Each found and either deleted or quarntined a TON of stuff. But this seems to have only aggravated the situation. At each reboot, most of the junk in still there, regenerating I suppose. Tried running the apps in safe mode, same results. With AVG, scan the files, and each time comes up with: Trojan horse downloader.dyfica.2.ba (and 4 more, different #s) Trojan horse downloader.istbar.5.E ( and 3 more, different #s) Trojan horse downloader.small.14.1f Trojan horse downloader.agent.7.f Ad-aware comes up with about 500 hits each run.     - agp recommendation? My monitor is starting to strange random colour and brightness changes. I am not totally sure if the monitor is at fault (it *is* an old NEC MultiSync 3FGx, but it has been the most reliable compared to a few other monitors I've been using on other pc's). When I wiggle the video cable slightly near the card connector, the colour/brightness problem re-occurs. I've tightened the connection as much as possible. I've also opened the pc case and have reseated the video card. But the problem is still the same. The current video card is a GeForce MX AGP with 32meg ram. The next product I am looking at that seems affordable (under $30 cdn) is an ATI All-in-Wonder RADEON 9000pro AGP with 64meg ram.     - Repairing ME When earlier versions of Windows became corrupted it was possible to repair damaged files or to make an installation on top of the existing installation.     - Reinstalling WinME Is it possible to partition my HD, reinstalling WinME on the new partition, then shift the program files I have on the HD over to the new partition and finally remove the old partition? Or am I just dreaming? I just hate taking it somewhere and getting every program and file I have on it removed and then put back on it after reformatting the HD and reindtalling WinME. Also, I am afraid of not getting some of the programs back up and running otherwise. Any suggestions? PS... Everything is good now but it can't drag/drop or copy/paste.

Try repairing Internet Explorer (in Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs).

may have messed up Windows ability to copy paste etc....
Either a System Restore or Reloading Windows in FULL
INSTALL MODE seems to be the best answer.
Save all precious files before reinstalling Windows.
