Hi,

To solve another problem, it's been suggested that I try to boot up in
'safe mode'. When I try the Start, Restart and press CTRL, or F8 or F5 or
Shift F5 I can't seem to get the computer (Dell Dimension 4100 Pentium III)
to begin life in the 'safe mode'. I'm somewhat chary of trying to deal with
registry editing. Any constructive advice on dealing with other approaches
to entering into 'safe mode' would be gratefully received.

aloha,

David C. Hurd

If you can't get to Safe Mode the 'easy' way<g>, then use MSCONFIG - The
Advanced button - put a check by 'Enable Start Menu', and click OK - you'll
be offered the boot options on all boots until you repeat the procedure,
unchecking the option.

Mahalo Noel,

Excellent advice, simple to follow - and it worked!

Now for my *other* problem...

I have found unwanted network places in my "My Network Places" folder
and can't delete them with a mouse right-click. I'm nervous about dealing
with the registry. Any constructive advice about this problem?

Glad it worked - usually does!<g>)

networking's not really my thing - I see you've been talking to Carey ,
who's really an expert on this, but.......

In Safe Mode, open Windows Explorer, and navigate to the C:\Windows\Profiles
folder - within that there's the folders which contain your logon names -
each one should have a subfolder 'NetHood' - which contains the Folder
Shortcuts.
Try deleting those, and see where that gets you.

Good Luck!
