I saved an important file off onto a disk (*.wks). I
then uninstalled Office Works and installed Office 2000.
When I try to open the file with Excel I get warnings and
then garbage. I no longer have Office Works available to
open the file and save it as .xls.

Any ideas on how to recover this file??

Open Excel and click on 'File' then 'Open'.
At the bottom of the box you'll see a drop down menu called 'Files of
type:'. Scroll down to 'Microsoft Works 2.0 files *.wks'.
Hopefully your file is in Works 2 format and will open.
