I recently noticed that a bunch of files (viruses) were
popping up on my Dad's computer, so I attempted to get
rid of them and did so, for most of them. But, there
appeared to be one using a DLL that loaded with all the
Explorer windows so it ran it everytime I opened one of
them. I attempted to get rid of it by installing anti-
virus, but it had not detected it. And I scanned with a
spyware program only to notice that one of the registry
keys was changed. Now, I don't remember what the registry
key was, but it had a %1 in it and it had been changed to
just the % in the value of the key. So I attempted
rebooting the computer only to have it go all the way to
the main screen, but only the cursor shows up along with
the background. All the other things such as taskbar,
desktop icons, etc. do not load. Now I know its because
of that registry value. I attempted going into Safe Mode
to change the value, but even in safe mode, it does the
same thing. I re-installed Windows ME a bunch of times in
attempt to thwart this problem, only to have the
installation give me errors, which baffled me. I was
wondering if there was some weird way to get into Windows
besides SafeMode or using the BootDisk which only gives
you a command prompt, so thats no help. Please help!

You *may* be beyond redemption by now, but one last, final chance that you
might have of getting back is as follows:

OK - the following assumes that you've no more virii on your machine - you
may
first need to check using a DOS virus checker e.g from www.f-prot.com

Boot using the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk and choose 4) Minimal Boot.
At the A:\> prompt, type "scanreg /restore" (no quotes and note the space
between the g and /) then press Enter.
Follow the screen prompts and when asked, select the last 'good' date that
PC ran OK, continuing with the instructions. If no such date exists then
you've probably had it!!

Don't forget to remove the floppy disk BEFORE you tell the machine to
reboot.

Hopefully, this method may get your pc running again.

Failing that, I suggest you take a look at Noel's site and read the
following article:-
