ANSI ) in config.sys on Win ME platform Hi everybody, I got a program that has to be run onto DOS prompt, and it requests code in CONFIG.SYS, like that: DEVICE=C:\...\ANSI.SYS (something like that) I wonder that on WIN ME platform, where the CONFIG.SYS located, and how to make it activate?     - Curious environment variable If I open a command prompt, and type SET to show the environment, one of the strings is BLASTER=I5,M220,D3,H7 or somesuch stuff. It looks like Sound Blaster settings. If I open msconfig, and look in environment tab, there is no sign of a BLASTER string! All the strings shown by SET appear somewhere, except for this BLASTER string. I've searched inside every file on the hard disk, and the only occurrence of BLASTER is in the regisrty recording that I've searched for it! Does anyone have any idea where it comes from?     - Disappearing Blocked Senders OK, I know I should probably post this in an IE or OE group but am hoping someone in here can help. All of a sudden, my killfile is acting up. Every time I close OE, all of the Blocked Senders for News disappear. This just started on Friday (PC was defragged Saturday and no change). Anybody have this happen before and what was the fix?     - reboot freeze after VPN install I'm trying to install the VPN client on my Win ME laptop. In theory this is simply a matter of going to the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and clicking on the Windows Setup tab. Then clicking on the Communications component allows me to select the VPN component. After it is installed the instructions say to reboot the PC but my laptop freezes during the boot. So I did a step-by-step reboot and found my laptop freezes after/when it loads msmouse.vxd. So does anybody have any idea what might cause this?     - system resources keep shrinking Last Friday I got the Netsky virus on my computer. I went to Symantec and did what was advised but since then my computer has been running really slow and the System icon shows system resources to be 41% free. When I delete cookies and temp. Internet files and restart, the Resources go up to 81% free but as soon as I go on the internet to get email it just slows down and the resources go back down too. It takes a very long time to go to any dites on the internet too. When I run a virus scan the computer shows no viruses so I don't know what's making the computer run so slow.     - Windows Update error help! Hello! When I download these 3 updates below I restart my computer and then go back to windows update and they are still there ready to be downloaded again. How can I download these and keep them on the computer? I ordered the Security Update CD and it still wouldn't update these three. I didn't get an error message with windowUpdate on the web but I did with the CD. The error message is "INF Install failure. Reason: The specified Path is Invalid." When i click close my entire desktop disappears.....I've ran scandisk and i also have Nortons systemworks...but it's still there.     - Error in PDF21a2.DLL I am running Windows ME and whenever I try to access explorer or my documents ect.I keep getting a pop up which reads: 'Explorer has caused an error in PDF21A2.DLL. Explorer will now close'. This stops me from accessing windows explorer & contol panel ect.     - no search menu When I go to Start,Search a line shows up that I can't click on to start a search. I don't have a search option from the tools menu in My Computer, explorer.exe, etc. I can right-click the start menu to do a search, but this is the only way.     - Remove Win98 CAB folders ? Three weeks ago I upgraded Win98 to WinME using an upgrade disk. Everything went well and the PC is stable. I have now been to Control Panel/Add Remove and uninstalled the option to revert to Win98. The WinME upgrade has put its install files into c:\windows\options\install folder. I still have a c:\windows\options\cabs full of the Win98 install files, and taking up 141Mb. I presume that it is safe to just delete this folder ? I still have the original Win98 OEM install cd, and don't envision ever having to re-install Win98. The PC is getting near the end of its useful life (300Mhz P2 and just 3.2Gb hard drive) and HD space is at a premium now. Also, under the ..cabs folder are other folders that the 98 OEM install (HP) created, folders called CHANNELS, CONTENT, Money98, MSWorks, oldinf, OLS, PWS, TOUR and wininf. These are all features/programs that I do not use or have installed. All have files that pre-date the original installation. Safe to just delete these folders too ? Deleting the cabs folder and subfolders will free 302Mb of disk space, which I find I now need as I sometimes get low disk space warnings and have to run disk cleanup every few days. I am fairly certain that deleting these folders will be just fine and dandy, but would love a 2nd opinion or two.     - Audio Gain Controller I watch TV (using Tuner Card). The TV card's output is in sound card's (Built-in Avance AC97)input. Some channels have very loud settings compare to others. This really disturbs when changing from low to high setting or vice versa. Is there any programe (free of course) which control low/high voice settings?     - AVG Disablility/Limitations I asked this question sometime ago: Which one is better----Norton, McAfee or PCCillin? After a long thread all the Gurus of this NG were agreed on AVG (Free Edition). :-(*) I did that after removing PCCillin (Which came with computer). 8-) Now I was struck with Chernobyl Virus with AVG real-time enabled. ;( All my EXEs (Also included in ZIPs) were infected on all partitions. AVGW.EXE itself was infected (My guardian needs a guardian :)). :-@ I used my old AV CD and Clean it. :-(*) What are the AVG limitations? Does it works on small viruses only and disable to locate big ones? If I start not to rely on it then what is the need of it? Why all these Gurus suggesting a less powerful tool leaving computer in danger? :-? Though I have survived but I am still using AVG because I really admire the suggestions/efforts of these Gurus and hope they will come with some strong logic.     - save data before reinstall help Hello, While running an online virus scanner my Norton Antivirus popped up a warning and I followed the prompts. After a few minutes the system became unstable and I had to shut it down. When I restarted some of my data was gone. For instance if I click on "favorites" some links are there, but many are not. If I click on my "casio" icon none of my digital photos are there. I ran a couple of data recovery programs and they found nothing. Somewhere along the way Windows ME became REALLY screwed up so I changed that drive over as a slave. I then went to "my computer" and did a search on the bad drive for "favorites" and "casio". Both searches found all of the missing data and what appears to be numerous duplicate folders with the same name. Some of them have the same data and others have only partial or no data at all. This affects more than just to two mentioned folders used as examples. What I need to do is make back ups of my data and then wipe the drive and start again. Is there a method to this or a program that I can run that will help me with this. I will be doing back ups to a cd burner and the drive is 100 gig at about 40% full. Some thoughts I had were to delete data as it is transfered to the cd to eliminate clutter. I also was concidering running a program that compares like files to eliminate duplicates and when everything is complete I was going to use the Western Digital site to "write zeros" to this drive so I can have a clean drive to start from.     - Windows ME Restore and Autorun glitches: any advice to solve? I have recently made several changes to my Compaq Presario 5000, running Windows ME. I now have a situation where System Restore Points are not being retained (I can create a restore point, but when I go back, they are not there.) The computer also does respond to Autorun when I insert CD-ROMS into my internal or external drive (Yes, I do have "Autorun Notification checked for both drives.) I did a Restore point set before making several modifications, and noted a previous restore point reflected at that time, but none since and all the old ones are gone. The modifications were that I installed an additional 256K RAM (to now total 384) plus a second (85GB) internal hard drive to the system. I encountered no real problems installing, formatting and having the system recognize these additions. I then tried to install and run Pinnacle Studio 8. While this software seemed to install properly, I have ongoing hangups in the process, it was not able to recognize my CD burner, etc. I have done several deinstall/reinstalls of Studio, downloaded a registry patch for this s/w, etc. Studio has continued to de-evolve in its ability to operate and I have picked up the restore point/autorun issue. Any sage advice for "nip and tuck" solutions, or am I facing the dreaded "system restore" option? I also have a Windows ME installation disk, so I could try to reinstall just the operating system, but do not know how that would impact programs already installed, data on the hard drive, MSIE 6, etc. I have backed up all of my data, including Outlook Express mail and address book, but I am concerned about the ability to run other software that I have installed.     - driver not loading. ntkern.vxd I just put win Me on an old win 95 computer that had crashed (I reformated the drive before upgrading). I previously had cable modem to the internet. after the upgrade, I cannot connect to the internet. When I look in device manager under the ethernet adaptor it gives me the message "the NDIS.VXD, NTKERN.VXD device loaders for this device could not load the device driver (code 2)." I searched my hard drive and I do not have ntkern.vxd. I do have ndis.vxd in c:/windows/system. I added it to c:/windows.system/vmm32. I looked over my old win 95 installation disc to see if I could extract ntkern from it, but it isn't there. I scanned my win Me disk, but it isn't there either. I need to replace NOTEPAD.exe Hi, A couple of days ago, I contracted a nasty CWS variant hijacker, which also changed/hijacked my notepad.exe and corrupted it, so that anytime I would try to open notepad, it would attempt to connect with a website(my firewall would warn me).     - Opening Slowly I'm experiencing a weird "slowness" problem that manifests itself with documents and web sites. If I double-click on a Word document to open it, it takes forever (60-90 seconds) to open. If I start Word (which only takes a second or two), then go to File/Open and open the same document, it opens quickly. Similarly, if I click Start/Run and enter a website (e.g., http://www.microsoft.com) it takes forever to open. If I start Internet Explorer and type the same website address, it opens quickly. In both instances, the mouse pointer turns into the hourglass icon when the pointer is positioned over the taskbar. The machine is up-to-date on all Windows updates, is virus- free (according to NAV and McAfee) and spyware-free (according to Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D), and freshly defragged.
