My cousin just purchased a used comp the o s is windows ME. After install a
spy/adware removal progam, everything is fine UNTIL, the last 1 % of the
removal process. the comp restarts, has a blue screen with the usual 2
options, " press any key or ctrl+alt+del..." however this was not suppose to
happen. had to completely shut down the power to the unit in order to do
anything. when i'd press "any key" it'd go back to the "LOOP". when i'd press
"ctrl+alt+del" it'd go back to the "LOOP". plus have the following error
message 0E : 0197 : BFF7834F. I'm about ready to shread the comp.

Not sure what you mean by "the last 1% of the removal process." Are you
talking about removing the spy/adware app or the removal of spy/adware by
this app?? Also, the next time you get the error message 0E : 0197 :
BFF7834F, hit Alt-D and post back with the displayed details. Oh yeah, you
should mention the name of the spy/adware app, as well. The more info you
can provide the easier it will be to help.
Heirloom, old and hang in there.....help is just

Not all spy/adware removal programs are friendly. Several
are betrayware and add spyware to your system.

Look here to see which to avoid:

You're welcome, Harry. It's amazing how much gargage is
out there and how frequently, in a desperate attempt,
users plug their systems with more of the same.

What I've also found interesting is that 'getting it to
work' and 'leaving it alone' is a great practice. I've
tinkered with settings, registry cleaners, firewalls, AV,
etc. and struggled with lockups. ScanDisk and Defrag in
safe mode once in a while has proven effective as the
firewall and AV don't interfere. I've left the system
alone for some time and haven't locked the 'ol dog since
then. I asked my wife and she says it hasn't locked in
the last month.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it is what I try to live by.

Glad to help.

The last 1% is the removal of spy/adware by the app. The program/app is
webroot's Spy Sweeper, I use it on my own comp. I fear that there might
actually be a worm or something. Norton's antivirus is not able to remove it.
Unfortunately all of this activity occures at the start up and neither on of
us is able to do anything. I checkd the "junk spy/adware" list thanks
webroot is not there. i'll do the alt+D when i go back over there. Thanks.

Very simple, yet most effective maintenance rule, KB:
"Only fix what's broken".
Abiding by it, means having won half the battle.

You got that right, Harry.

Keeping the system clean of malware is, I think, the other

Thanks for the info. I'm using webroot spy sweeper. yea i double checked adn
it's not on the list. Thank God for that! I use it on my own pc. I'm
fearful that she might actually be infected with something, definetly beyond
my capabilities. i'm not a comp expert, just someone that owns a comp.
Anyway, the Norton's AV states that there is a worm or something, that it
cannot remove. I'm going back over to work on it some more.

I don't mean to be intrusive, but isn't "Norton" to be avoided if you run
WinME? To my knowledge it is the prevailing attitude in this group.
On the other hand I could be mistaken, too.
In the end it's your call.

If you fear viral infection:

Go to this link http://www.ravantivirus.com/ . In the
upper left portion of
the screen, under MENU, you will see "Scan online". Click
on it.

On the next page in the RAV Outbreak Security Service
(orange text) box, at the bottom,
there's line "To continue without subscribing click here.
Click there, no need to
enter anything in the yellow field and no need to hit the
continue button.

On the next page you will be in the scanner. It should
update the latest virus definitions
automatically. Be patient, it will take some time (~15
min. on my slow connection) to update.

After the update is complete (It will say "Update
finished. Ready to scan." when it's done),
check the Autoclean box (right below the Scan My PC
button).

Then press the "Scan My PC" button and you're off. Again,
be patient, this will take some time,
30 minutes on my slow machine.

Good luck.

I don't understand, nortons is not compatible with WinME? I know that
