After all is said and done, my Compact Disc drive is *unreadable* for =

As I find out, the *lost* data (?) can be recovered at a considerable =
expense ( 100 to 250 p/st.). It will be a lot 'cheaper' to replace it =
with a new one. I had no idea that the CD drive could become unreadable.
How is that possible?

Again.....CD drives (like anything else in the world) do break down. I =

> How is that possible?

If you are talking about the disks rather than the drive

1) As I have mentioned on a number of occasions in this thread CDs written
using packet writing software such as Adaptec/Roxio's DirectCD are often
unreadable other than in the drive on which they were written and even
then if the wind if blowing from the right direction and the moon is blue.

2) The dyes used to make CDR and CDRWs can degrade, especially if exposed
to sun light for long periods. Older dyes are less stable than more
modern dyes. The claimed life of a CD varies from manufacturer to
manufacturer and can range from just a few years to a claimed 100 years.

3) CDs can be easily damaged and if the top layer is damaged that can be
the end of the CD. Note the top, printed layer is the layer that needs to
be protected, not the bottom layer which if scratched can often be
repaired quite inexpensively.

4) In hot humid climates it is possible for a fungus to attack a CD dye
layer leading to the loss of the CD.

If you are talking about the actual drive, the laser wears out over time
gradually getting less bright and for CD writers this is first apparent
when it becomes more difficult to reliably write to a CD rather than read
a CD.

Harry,

In which case I do have to ask what you meant by "lost data" since the
drive contains none, this is what is written on the disks. I'm also a
little unclear what you meant by "considerable expense" given that here in
the UK a new 52x Sony CD burner costs around US$25 at today's exchange
rate including 17.5% tax.

I only looked at dabs where the cheapest CD-RW was a Sony at GBP13.44 to
which would need to be added delivery. Even more amazing though I feel is
a Samsung 16x dual layer DVD-RW at GBP23.50 and if you want it to include
DVDRAM there's a Sony at GBP24.08. I'm sure that with a little effort one
could find even cheaper prices.

It never pays to check prices soon after you've bought an item. For
example the cost of 1GB usb pen drives halved during March/April. I
bought a 2GB drive to replace a 1GB drive that seemed mysteriously have
made its way to Sydney (daughters, who'd 'ave 'em) and paid less for the
2GB drive than I had for the 1GB just three weeks earlier.

As far as the lost data is concerned, a slip of the tongue on my part.
At one point they talk about drives, but mainly it is about disks and that
doesn't pertain to my situation. There's where I mistakenly compared the
given prices, sorry about that, Mike. But then my starting post pointed in
the direction of the drive, not the disk.
To finish this subject, I will have to get another drive, since this one
showed the same behavior after performing a complete un- and reinstall.
Thank you for your assistence.

Harry.

Per stitch, Heather? Not a bad guess but it is pound/sterling, I don't =
have the sign on my keyboard. *Twilight* can be cozy at the right time, =
think about that. Don't worry about my CD-ROM drive, I'll find one in =
the neighborhood somewhere.
Thanks for your concerns.

You confuse the heck out of us with your descriptions, so I will =
answer what I *think* you are saying.....

CD drives break. New ones do not cost a lot of money. Replace it. =20

Lost Data?? Where?? No data on a CD drive. What costs 100 to =
250.....p/st???? No idea what you are talking about. (per stitch?)

Again.....CD drives (like anything else in the world) do break down. =
I replaced my WinME machine one for $30 Cdn. Got an LG one. Get out =
your Visa card and have a tech install it. The $30 I spent included the =
tech's time (Willy Wonderful). =20

Hope that answers whatever it is you are asking.

After all is said and done, my Compact Disc drive is *unreadable* =
for whatever reason, yet unbeknown to me.
As I find out, the *lost* data (?) can be recovered at a =
considerable expense ( 100 to 250 p/st.). It will be a lot 'cheaper' to =
replace it with a new one. I had no idea that the CD drive could become =
unreadable.
How is that possible?
Appreciate the answer. =20

Harry.

I don't suppose I can put off getting one any longer. I was bemused enough -
and doubtless they're related! - about how CDR prices have plummetted
recently, packs of 10 quality brands going in the local Co-op for what last
year I still had to search for. And out of, as it were, my peripheral
vision, I have noticed that DVD RW prices are down to what CDR's were. I
suppose standalone DVD player take-up is almost complete now, too.

<vbg> And probably available even more cheaply at the airport!

<lol> The prices are just crazy sometimes, when I had my DVDRW drive
fitted it cost me about £100, the pen drive I had was 128mb and that was
about £40 but they were awhile ago. I bought another pen drive the other
week for £15 and that was a 512mb one.
At least my pen drive didn't go as far as Australia, just the next room
but I made sure Kelly had the old one <g>

And then, maybe not, if I follow Noel's advice 'all the way', which I intend
to do. When I am done, I shall report back.

Harry.
