Hello,
When running CCleaner, there are two entries identified as "issues". After
being deleted, re-booting the system & running CCleaner again, these two
same entries keep *re-appearing* as "issues":

1) C:\WINDOWS\player.exe %1
*Registry Key*: HKCR\.mov\shell\open

2) C:\WINDOWS \viewer.exe %1
*Registry Key*: HKCR\.pic\shell\open

Is there a way to remove these registry entries - and if so, how?

Are these registry keys used by any other application or the OS? If so,
should I just keep ignoring them?

Running Windows ME.
Thanks,
Ed

Such entries would be used by player.exe and viewer.exe neither of which
is part of the Win Me operating system. If unwanted and you have no valid
applications with these names that you have installed on your system then
I've always found the delete key useful for dealing with such problems.
<g>

Out of the box Win Me has no application associated with MOV or PIC files
both of which are associated with Apple's QuickTime. Apple's two
applications are currently called PictureViewer.exe and
QuickTimePlayer.exe but it is possible that in older versions of QT this
was player.exe and viewer.exe.

Mike,
Thanks for your reponse. Through "Search" I did find a couple of files for
QuickTime, which I deleted. I also went into the Register and deleted
*.mov* & *.pic* files from HKCR\.mov\shell\open and HKCR\.pic\shell\open.
I can get rid of these files, yet when I reboot and do another scan with
CCleaner, those items (.mov & .pic) are still there.
Would appreciate your help and patience.
Thank you,
Ed

Where can I find the player.exe and viewer.exe files? Although displayed as
c:\WINDOWS\player.exe %1.... and
c:\WINDOWS\viewer.exe %1....I can't locate them.

Hi Ed,

Just a FYI, if you use 'Real Alternative' and 'QuickTime Alternative' -
freeware codecs that use Media Player Classic - you can still run,
respectively, Real Player or Quick Time format files without having either
of those obtrusive pieces of junk installed. Install the 'Alternatives':
http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTime_Alternative_download.htm and they'll
become the default handlers for those file types.

If not required remove MOV & PIC as registered file types. Control Panel
| Folder Options | File Types.

Mike,
Thank you, everything is back to normal now.
Shane, I downloaded the link you provided with the appropriate version for
Win ME. Looks like it's working just fine. Thank you.

Maybe I am missing something in reading this thread, but, when scanning
"Issues" with CCleaner, the lower, right hand button allows "Fix Issues" and
the option (on by default) to save the removed items in the event they may
have been needed, so that they may be restored without problem.
Heirloom, old and mine works that way

Hi Heirloom,
You are correct about the feature to fix issues & save them in case these
are needed. The files I had were NOT needed and everytime I rebooted, the
files would re-appear as issues again - this, as Mike explained in this
thread, was due to obsolete Apple Quicktime files that I had in my computer
and are also highlighted in the thread.
Cheers,
Ed
