    - CD Drive I have a cd drive on my computer which is not being recognized by ME. I put the ME disk in the cd drive but it doesn't open because the drive is not listed. How do I get ME to open the drive so that I can update drivers on the computer? Could I be able to put the XP disk in and install it from that drive on that computer?     - TaxCut,TurboTax & Windows ME Neither TaxCut nor TurboTax for this year's (i.e. for tax year 2007) U.S. tax returns lists Windows ME as meeting the minimum requirements for running the tax preparation software. This is a tad upsetting because the only computer I have runs Windows ME. Perhaps one of the packages actually runs on Windows ME.     - Need driver help for Win ME.....? Hi all, I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to help me.......... I'm trying to update my drivers (modem, usb, sound, COM ports). I've been to umpteen sites, and can't figure out which drivers are the right ones for my setup. Microsoft doesn't support my operating system anymore, so I'm stuck looking for the drivers at various other sites. There are a *huge* number of possibilities (or so it seems)...........I just want whichever drivers are the latest, BUT reliable!! I'm using: Windows ME Modem is: PCTEL Platinum V.90 Sound: ESS Allegro PCI Audio (WDM) USB is: 1.something, not 2.0. Can/should/do I upgrade to 2.0? If not, where can I get the newest drivers for USB 1.something? (I probably need COM port driver(s) too) My sound drivers haven't given any trouble, but I'd like the current drivers. My USB and modem drivers, however, are causing big problems. Can anyone help.......please?! I'd really appreciate it!     - Adding to the registry from a disc I recently had to reinstall Windows ME. I had previously backed up the hard disk (by setting it as a slave in another machine and transferring everything to DVDs) and had hoped to restore everything by simply copying everything from the DVDs back onto the same hard disk. But for some reason it wouldn't boot ("invalid system disk" message). So I reinstalled Win ME and used the DVDs to manually put back most of my data. However, there are some registry entries (presets for a photo program) that I need to restore to the new registry but I don't know how to do this. I know how to use regedit to make copies of registry keys from the C drive, but how do I get them from a DVD so I can then add them to the new registry? Any help will be much appreciated.     - default location for OE address book My father's computer won't start windows. I am going to use the reinstall disk that came with the computer, but would like to try to save his files first. I have located everything except the address book used by outlook express. Can anyone tell me the default location of the file?     - slow shutdown in WinME which used to be a quick shutdown WinME has been treating me well for shutdowns, which would usually happen within 5 seconds after clicking shutdown. Recently, I had a power failure while using WinME, and after I had power again, it went through the regular screens where it runs scandisk, computer shutdown improperly, etc., which completed. But now when I go to normally shutdown this PC, it takes much longer, from 45 seconds to a minute. Is there anyway to make the WinME PC I have shutdown much quicker like it used to shutdown? Thanks!     - Trouble displaying photos This is a continuation of a subject started on October 29. If she then clicks on View Slideshow, the same photo, but larger, will (usually) appear. If she clicks on the right-pointing arrow (to the right of Play), photo 2 appears. Click on the same arrow again, and nothing happens - no photo 3. Clicking on the left-pointing arrow does NOT take her back to photo 1 - she's hung up at photo 2. And sometimes, when she goes to the above link, that smaller photo of the kitten does not appear. When she gets hung up at photo 2, we recover by closing that browser (IE) window, returning to the email that originally provided the above link, and clicking on the link again. ******************************************************** I've received suggestions to verify that: a) she has the latest version of QuickTime - she has b) IE is version 6 - it is c) Sun Java is the latest - she didn't have it at all. She does now. The problem remains. There are no anti-virus or spyware programs that might cause strange problems. I've emailed Kodak support asking simply what the system requirements are.     - problem in running DOS program under windows ME Hi, I have an old DOS program which runs fine in every version of Windows EXCEPT WindowsME !. The error box I get is here : "This program has performad an illegal operation and will be terminated.Quit all programs and then restart your ...." and it also shows under its details button : "The program encountered a general protection exception Fault location 10F0:0138 Interrupts in service: None" Thus, it leads me to believe that WindowsME does not do as good of job translating the FAT 32 stuff into compatible FAT16 calls needed by the DOS program. Is there any cure other than dumping WindowsME and putting a different version on all the new machines?     - how boot to desktop? Hi, I have a pc ME that stops to get a password every time it boots. I want it to boot to the desktop, but so far I have not been able to do so. I switch the network thing to windows login, and I also searched for a pwl file to delete, but there was no pwl file on the PC. The PC runs fine, it just always stops for a password, and there isn't any password. Any ideas much appreicated.     - HP ScanJet 5370C This scanner workes fine for 3-4 scans, then it begins to scan 3 small images at the top of the scan and continues to do so until the scanning software is closed, in this case, paperport 11. The A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2 with 400 MHz FSB (Rev 1 is 333FSB) with an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ is actually the fastest Socket A chip they made. This is "7th generation" 32 bit processing technology, new in 2003. Original CD's even include drivers for SATA drives under WinME. Original CD's for the A7N8X Deluxe main board also have DVD player software. That family of main boards was VERY popular with gamers and overclockers because the overclocking could all be done from the BIOS software. The AMD XP 3200+ CPU still has an amazing level of demand for 4 year old technology that is no longer manufactured. The next jump up from Athlon XP 3200+ Socket A 32 bit processors would be Athlon XP 64 xxxx+ 64 bit processors right? WinME won't run on 64 bit processors will it? Even people wanting WinXP need to get a special 64 bit version of that don't they? Are there any 8th generation processor/main boards that have WinME drivers?     - Right click:"Arrange Icons by date" Question In windows Explorer you can add 'Date Created' column by going to View/choose column/date created. Arranging by Date created will always sort the files date and time order, so that the earliest file appears first and the latest file appears last; You can also arrange files in date order by right clicking on a blank space in the folder and selecting Arrange Icons 'By Date' Also note: that is the same function that is available when you want to select files in WMP or any other application that calls on the "open folder" or "open files" dialogue box. Arrange Icons 'By Date' acts differently to sort files by date created! The results are not consistent ie some older files will appear before some newer files.     - screen images and font distorted When I turned on my computer today, the size of desktop screen was distorted--everything---icons, font and screensaver pic all look stretched out width ways. And it is the same with all screens I open--internet explorer, all websites, e-mail etc. I have to keep scrolling over on the internet now to see the full screen because it is all stretched out!     - Slow startup due to Windows splash screen appearing during POST When the POST first starts, various BIOS settings are displayed. Then the Windows splash screen appears for about five seconds. After that, the remaining portions of the POST appear before the computer gets to the desktop. I may have inadvertently caused this problem when changing various settings by using the FreshUI tweak program. (Not a fault of the program.)     - wireless on ME Hi, I was having trouble with my USB wireless adapter but just found the culprit with the help of Trend net tech support. THe wireless program was showing my network at 100% signal. But would not let me connect to the internet. They suggested I disable my ZOnealarm and AVG free edition and sure enough, I was able to open Internet explorer pages and even type this post. I ENABLED the AVG virus and all good. SO I think the culprit was my firewall (ZA).... So, I am uncomfortable having my firewall disabled. Can anyone recommend a free firewall that is user freindly and perhaps would not interfere with the wireless connection.     - monitor or ME problem Hi, I just plugged into my ME unit a Dell monitor that is 4 years old. Monitor is in excellant condition. But, the desktop looks weird in the sence that it is concaveish (just like the shape of these parenthesis). and the icons are smaler. If the settings are at the default settings, I dont like them.     - Can't use Windows Update after ME reinstall I used my recovery CD to do a fresh reinstall of windows ME. I went to windows update and it said I had to upgrade IE as a critical update first.     - can't connect to web Wirless modum is woking with a separate xp computer and the Windows Me computer used to work wireless but it stopped working. In control panel, network, tcp/ip , I chose obtain an ip addr automatically and detect connection to network media, ok, ok and it says it downloads settings but I still can't connect.     - Smitfraud, etc. Hope this gets thru.......but just finished trying to clean up my neighbour's computer after his 20 year old was home for the weekend and left him with Zlob and Smitfraud and a gazillion other things. Do I rightly recall that someone on here said I could not get into Safe Mode with a SATA Drive??? Because I couldn't get into it on his and noticed the SATA stuff. I still think (in my spare time) that I am going to write a Dummy Book for Computer Dummies......a really basic thing which I could call "OK, Now you Have a New Computer.....What's Next". Neighbour didn't know that he had to a) update Spybot; and b) actually scan with it. He had some 24,000 items to Immunize. The scan was horrifying!! I set him up with Avast and Zone Alarm a couple of weeks ago, but still can't figure out how on earth Smitfraud (Antivirgear) got on there. Suspect Son #1 might have used a CD from University on it. He is INFESTED!!!!! So needless to say, I have now sent him over to Willy the Wonder Tech because a) he is the best, and b) they have used him before. I am not touching the registry entries. Bleeping Computer has the Smitfraud tool in case anyone needs it, but I couldn't get into Safe Mode to use it. His computer is a Dell and I don't know what Willy did with mine, but I have a devil of a time getting into it here. F8 doesn't work. Think it is F8 + Enter. Must ask him. Now.....back to the damned dentist tomorrow (2 root canals later) and get about 2 hours worth of work done. Then the bridge next week. I am beginning to hate dentists!!     - IEv6 slowdown Greetings, I've noticed a great slowdown of broadband speed when using IEv6. (broadband normally 785kbps IEv6 reduced to 31.7kbps) If I use FireFoxv2 speed is normal.. (785kbps) I've AV checked IEv6 nothing found.. Did a spyware/adware check also nothing found. Did a repair of IEv6 from ME nothing changed. Did a full Registry scan nothing found.     - Mouse/cursor is not communicating in ME Hi, all of a sudden, I turned on the pc and the screen looked different. It has the same look as when you go into safe mode. big pixels and icons. Also, for some reason, the mouse doesnt do anything. I tried to do everything by just using the keyboard but the fact remains that the cursor and mouse lost contact with my ME pc. can you give me some trouble shooting tips. I have restarted endless times and nothing helps. Like I said, the whole icons and look resemble as when you go into safe mode. ALSO, what can I do to "X" out of a page by using the keyboard in case a fix to this problem takes longer for me to get, thank you One more thing. I see the a little "hand" on one of the icons on the desk top and it is stuck on one of my programs.     - Adaware problem,,,, again Hello to all,, Been a while,,, I have flipping well forgotton how to fix/repair/make-work the stupid adaware program. I keep forgetting to come in here and ask;; It is now showing 45 days out of date, (due to everytime I try to update, it does the "5% error thing". ) and then I go off and do something else... I have Asquared, and Spybot, and SpyBlaster and etc.... and now,, I really wonder if flipping adaware is worth all the hassle? I run the others like I normally would,, and havent had a problem... but,,, still have a soft-spot for adaware. Is this whole thing to do with adaware forcing people to update the whole thing?
