Hi, can anyone help me with my latest WinMe anomalies? (yes, more than
one...) Started out with ScanDisk acting up, informing me that "Your computer
does not have enough available memory to complete this task. If any other
programs are running, quit one or more of them, and then click OK." I've
never had this problem before. There is enough memory and I'm not running
anything unusual or more than normal/before (Only things that are running
from StartUp are Explorer and Systray, eveything else is disabled/not enabled
at start up.) Then, since I couldn't remedy the problem, I figured I take the
easy road and restore the comp to an earlier date, but as it turns out, the
Sys Restore not working either. I picked several earlier dates but so far all
have been unsuccessful and (supposedly) there were no changes made to the
comp. I tried both ScanDisk and Sys Restore in Safe Mode, but to no avail.
(There are plenty or system checkpoints, so that is not a problem; it just
won't restore to any of them.)
Also, the IE | Internet Options | Temp Internet Files | Settings | View
Files -when trying to see them a message pops up that says IE Script Error
(Line 53, Char 13, Error Object Expected Code 0 URL
file://C:\WINDOWS\Web\default.htt and Do you want to continue running scripts
on this page?...)
The only new thing that I'd installed is a program called ScreenThemes. I
didn't have these problems with the comp prior (never with the ScanDisk; the
Sys Restore had had some problems in the past), so anyone knows if the
problems are a result of this new application or it's just a coincidence? And
anyone out there knows how to fix the problems with ScanDisk and SysRes?
Please Help!

Your system Restore problem....

It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without
which any current restore points are just space fillers.
To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the
file, and select Properties.
What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed
the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem
if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.

To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download
the patch for offline install
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q290700
Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time,
clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and
creating a single new one.
You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the
adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard
Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most
purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office.

As for Scandisk - what size disk is it, and how much free space is there?

Thanks for trying to help. Yes, I have the .3003 versoin of the .dll file.
The total disk space is 30GB and free space is 10.9GB
Also, I don't have a 'wininit' file, if that would've been the next one to
be checked.
I'm almost more concerned about the Scandisk problem since when it used to
run, almost routinely I got the message at the end that Scandisk found
problems and fixed them all. It was reassuring to know, to say the least...,
and now I no longer have that tool!

In the meantime (whilst waiting for Noel to get home from work <g) try
running scandisk in Safe Mode - or even in Real Mode DOS (using your Windows
Startup Floppy Disk) and see if it runs OK in either of those two modes.

However, "almost routinely I got the message at the end that Scandisk found
problems and fixed them all." although 'reassuring' it also sounds a little
worrying! You *may* have a failing HD.
