I have a computer that must be full of something but I
cannot get on the internet to scan it.
All of a sudden Norton Antivirus is not working and it
will not let me reinstall AOL software .
I get lots of error messages when I try to install AOL
software and/or Norton updates from a cd, such as:
stmgr has caused an error in WINTRUST.dll
Winhost has caused an error in <unknown>
Comp01 has caused an error in WINTRUST.dll
Sucatreg has caused an error in WINTRUST,dll
ospath has caused an error in setupx.dll
Winhost32 has caused an error in <unknown>
Any ideas?

I wish I could but it will not let me go online and will
not let me install the AOL software to get online. All
fixes must be offline.
I do however have another computer that I can get online
with and download to a cd.

Use the other computer to download this and put it on a floppy and then
install it in Safe Mode to check for viruses:

It appears that if the free copy finds the virus, you have to then get the
registered version in order to clean it.

From the website:

'A free download of FireLite [ 1100KB ] version is also available to detect
viruses in your system. Scan your system using FireLite version. If you find
any virus, use registered version of Fire to remove. To get the registered
version of Fire call us at 044-8170440, 8171082'

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

Of course!

If the online scanners didn't find anything then Stinger (which only targets ~42 infectors
and their variants) would not have found anything.
There are those who think Stinger is an investigational tool. It is not. It is a virus and
worm removal tool to be used *only* when you have a worm or virus that Stinger targets.

At this point I must state you have no virus but a software corruption, mixed-matched DLL,
type problem.

David
AFAIK, Maggie still has not run a proper AV
can you confirm/deny this Maggie, please?

David - as I keep on telling you, the Stinger run as a complementary utility
to an AV will potentially find things that the AV can't - simply because the
AV may have been switched off by the virus!!
I NEVER suggest that it be run in isolation.

I have not been able to run any updated av since I cannot
get online with this machine.
I did update adaware on my other computer, burned it to cd
and ran it. It found and eliminated 41 spyware objects but
I still am not able to install the aol software.
I get to 83% installed and error messages come up and shut
down the installation.
I called AOL and they claim the error messages indicate a
windows problem
error messages during installation:
Comp01 has caused and error in CRYPT32.DLL
Comp01 has caused and error in WINTRUST.DLL

Re: Bugs everywhere and No internet by Jack

Jack

Margie has another thread in this ng working this same problem with Mike
M.

Unfortunately, it appears she has the dreaded "stmgr has caused a
problem in wintrust.dll".
AFSAIK,
Past attempts to repair this by reinstalling numerous files associated
with sucatreg, wintrust, CryptoAPI , and trying to get new digital
certificates, have failed.
Typically, this error follows some failed Win Update session.

Her choices are to continue without either System Restore and SFP, OR to
reinstall WinME.
IMO, she MUST reinstall the OS, unless Mike has recently found another
solution.
While one might be willing to give up SR, SFP is just too important not
to have.

I would tend to agree here, Jack and anon.
Unfortunately, the only known certain fix for the STMGR error in WINTRUST is
a clean install :(

If you're willing to work on this over an extended period, please feel free
to email me at
noeldp AT mvps.org
(replace " AT " with "@")
and we''ll see what we an find out about it, and whether we can fix it.

OTOH, if you need the machine back up and running properly quickly, your
best bet is to back up your data to CD, then reformat/reinstall
