Does this happen in Safe Mode?

I've seen this exact-same problem on a Gateway Essencial
930C w/ 128mb ram running Windows ME 4.90.3000(Build
3000). The machine has "a lot" of programs loading at
startup (Norton AV, AOL, Weatherbug, waving flag icon,
ect, etc, etc.), but the machines owner swears that all of
them had been installed and running long before this
problem appeared. A virus scan using the latest
definition file shows no infestations.

The machine will lock at the blue screen error, and
require a power-cycle to reboot. Once I'm lucky enough to
get it booted into safe-mode (it may take several
attempts), I can then (usually) reboot into normal mode,
and the machine performs normally.

I have seen this same problem posted on another support
site, so this is not an isolated ME problem.

Does anyone have the ammunition necessary to slay this
particular dragon?
