Anyone out there know the key(s) to press at boot up to
dos command prompt without attempting to start windows.

The DEL button will take you to Bios set up only. Tried
F8, F1 etc etc. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. (there is no boot disk to use to accomplish
this).

Thanks
Ann

The only way to boot to real-mode DOS in ME is to use the safety boot
floppy. There is no other option.

This is a rather dangerous procedure since launching this shortcut from
within ME will cause corruption. WinME does not support real mode Dos and
the OS was designed around that fact.

Jerome's comment to only use the WinME start-up disk is the right comment.
Using any other method is undefined behaviour.

The MVP-method it's a very unsatisfactory one - more an exercise than
actually useful. I'd even prefer the Geocities method that (for most user's
levels of expertise) breaks Safe Mode. But burn the contents of
Windows\Command plus the odd stray DOS app not in that folder, and any 3rd
party utilities/apps one prefers, to a CD and make it bootable with a ME
EBD - with config.sys and autoexec.bat suitably edited and that's the best
way to get to real mode DOS in ME.

Point was that executing the real mode link will corrupt the OS while OS is
running. I wasn't saying don't do it and neither did i state it can't be
done. It's just not recommended: fact.
...the corruption list:
real mode TSRs, accessing a device with real mode driver when a 32 bit
driver is already controlling device. Modifying a comspec environment from
protected mode to real mode (note the computer crash - this can be a few
paragraphs worth of implications). Long name corruption when a utility that
isn't long-aware is executed. etc...
