Well I found the problem. I'd seen this "KB891711" thing in the add/remove
programs list, and now on this group. I remember it as an update around the
same time this problem started. I just uninstalled it, and the problem has
gone away. Truly absurd that it's 2005 and we're still dealing with such
nonsense...
