I understand that Windows ME was not supposed to be
infected, but my computer lost internet service for a day
and a half, and shut down in the middle of use for no
apparent reason yesterday (Mon. 8/11). If not the worm,
then what could have caused this?

Same thing happened to me 2 days ago. I am DSL, windows
ME. I called my service provider, they had me go to
run/winipcfg and reset. They did not mention anything
about maybe it could be from that virus. I have never had
this problem before. I thought it was ironic to read your
message and same thing happened to you.

Your problems could be due to countless other viruses or even operations
trouble but I can assure you that they were not due to the W32.Blaster.Worm
since Win Me like all Win 9x systems has no RPC service.

Figgs,

Without the use of a sledgehammer and crowbar the patch won't install. What
does concern me is the worry about just one vulnerability whereas there is a
continual day on day need to be vigilant, not just on a slow news day when the
press and TV decide to publicise a particular worm. I wonder how many of
those posting today will be updating their AV signatures and downloading
patches tomorrow or next week let alone next month.

Loads of virus generated problems are being posted at the moment. None of
course due to Blaster but rather due to the installation of ten or more
patches at the same time, or the problems caused by Live Update (full
_RESTORE\TEMP folder) or the Witch Doctor (oem*.inf files), etc. etc.

Whilst it is commendable that so many want to check their systems today I
would be far happier if they were to continue to do so even on days when worms
and trojans aren't newsworthy.

Cheers,

Mike
