    - Phantom DVD Drives in Win ME. Hello All, I have just done an install of Windows ME on a friends' computer and the DVD drive appears several times in both Device Manager and Windows Explorer. The computer has a single HDD which appears as device C:; a CD Re-Writer, which appears as device D:; and a single DVD-ROM drive which appears as devices E: to L:. These "Phantom Drives" (F: to L:) are all the DVD-ROM. The HDD and CD are on IDE-0; the DVD is on IDE-1 Master. Has anyone any suggestions as to why this might be, and how to rectify the problem? Mobo is Gigabyte GA-5AA with latest (F7b) BIOS.     - tahoma font I have WIndows ME on my laptop, and need to install a later version of tahoma font than the one already in the FONTS folder. I get the message "tahoma already installed, delete old version first", and cannot delete the existing version. Nothing happens when I try to delete it - the "delete" is just ignored. I understand that this may be because Windows does need to have tahoma for some reason and therefore does now alllow its deletion. Has anyone had or heard about this problem?     - Kernel 32 Caused a General Protection Fault and also MSN Errors ME, IE 6, Dell 4100 series. 20 gigabytes hard drive, 256 mb ram. While on a "Scientific American" website and while SpyDoctor was scanning for "infections," I received the following message in black on a white background box: Kernel 32 caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0001.000075a8. My puter was frozen and ctrl-alt-del did nothing, so I had to use the emergency reboot button. I suspect this was caused by SpyDoctor, but I don't know. Upon start up, I also receive the following messages: "Internet Explorer Script Error Line 20 Char 1 Error object expected Code 0 url: http://t.msn.com/en-us/default.aspx?ver=7.0.0777&did=1 Do you want to continue running script on this page?" I click No several times, but the message reappears, sometimes with Line 7 instead of 20. Last time this happened (after the puter loaded), I had to click 7 times. This appears related to an msn site. Before I was getting that message, I would receive an MSN newsflash box, together with my hotmail entries, which I did not want to appear. So, I downloaded "Startup Cop" and deleted the MSN site (msnmsgr.exe) from appearing at start up. However, in order to access my hotmail, when I clicked on the little pawn in the Systray, the site automatically undeleted itself from the startup cop menu.     - Strange Delete window on bootup. i NetHood is a Windows System folder and is required for windows to run properly. I cannot be deleted. I responded with ok. Everything else went normally.     - windows protection error help get this but can't even start up in safe mode!! think the boys have tried installing a game and PC hasn't shut down properly.     - WinMe - Error Message At the end of burning a DVD+R the error message came on blue screen error 0D:0167:000075A8 (0=zero) Cntrl+Alt+Del - just flashes the screen nothing else happened.     - Frozen or slow OEM logo at boot Good morning, afternoon or evening (as the case may). I am currently running the following: Win Me 4.90.3000, IE 5.50.4807.2300 with my trusty Outlook Express 5.50.4807.1700. My startups are ZA 2.6.362, Spyblocker 5.0 and AVG 7.0.308. The hardware is a Dell 4100 933mhz 256mb ram and 20gb generic IDE disk drive (type 47). As my subject header implies when I first boot-up the OEM logo stays up for about 45 seconds. Normally it flashes by so quickly it is barely seen. I have to admit my first action was to reset my computer after about 10 seconds approx. 5 times in row. While reading a manual the computer was able to complete the boot. I "googled" this group with the query "slow start +WinME". I tried some of the suggestions, namely msconfig and restore point with no success. During the boot process I noticed the cd-rom drive light would come on but I couldn't hear the "A" drive. I placed my boot floppy in the "A" drive but the computer would not read it. At that point I goggled "can't access floopy drive" generally (Sadly, I have to admit I derived some pleasure from the number of linux people who had the same problem) and on this group. I thought the problems were related so I checked bios and the floppy was there and the boot order is correct. After sleeping on it, I decided to check to see if there was a cd in the player. Grasping at that straw, I found I wasn't able to get it to open. Looking in explorer, I don't see the CD or the CD-RW drive although the A and C drive are there.     - Find out the last day the computer was turn on Can anyone tell me how to find out the computer was last turn on? The story is this: I worked in a community centre, and we use to hire an IT company to fix the computer. However since we got them for the cheapest price for the job. They have not been the best. There is a computer running WinME, and few days ago, the IT company came and fixed the computer for some reasons. We knew they used the ME machine. Just not, it doesn't want to boot up at all. We have already elimate it is not hardware failure. That's why I want to know how can I find out when is the last time the computer was turned on. I am a bit perplexed as these patches go back to 2002-3. Other online security checks I have run show that all my ports are stealthed...But I guess this might be a different issue... My questions now are: 1) Could it be that I'm already protected against these exploits? Could that online reading be erroneous? 2) Are there any risks to my system by installing patches such as these? Can they be uninstalled if they create problems?     - OT: ZAPro + XP or Me? Just an FYI for those using ZAPro, especially on an XP box........this is just in case it is happening with Me, as well. There is a situation when using OE that the True Vector portion of ZAPro (vsmon.exe) will begin using up all your cpu cycles, causing the machine to bog down severely or even lock up. Zone Labs is aware and promises a fix on the next update. Until then, the workaround is to disable "Email Protection" (really not needed if your AV scans email, which may be part of the problem). I performed the workaround and have not had the problem since.....must admit that it only happened a couple of times before and was cured with a reboot, temporarily. Anyway, if you are using ZAPro, latest version, and your machine is bogging or freezing, use a process viewer to see if <vsmon.exe> in running away with the processor, 50+%..........if so, use the workaround.     - TIF index.dat files I've been getting up to 12 TIF, Content.IEF subfolders with the usual random names. They each contain a single file named, index.dat, which resist manual deletion. I get a warning asking if I should delete the 'system files' and when I do delete them, Windows Explorer hangs for a couple minutes and then will close normally. Is this normal?     - ME installation cd What files and\or cabs are needed to make a windows ME installation cd? I currently do not have an installation cd for this computer, and it would be a comfort to have one, just in case. From what I understand I must burn all the contents of the c:\windows\options\install to a cd.     - Removal of MSDOS memory resident program I downloaded a couple of stand alone, freware programs, I tried to get rid of them but...there was no unistall feature built into the programs and the programs were not listed under the add/remove program, their web sites support was 'pay for help'. I dragged the progams into my trash, empited the trash and restarted. The programs location under properties were listed as being on my desktop, (not a shortcut on the desktop). Now when I start my computer in safe mode and right hand click the 'my computer' logo and go>properties>performace...I get a message that says "Real mode driver or memory resident program loaded in config.sys or autoexec.bat file" and when I click for more info I get..."Drive X is using an MS-DOS mode file system, a driver listed in the Config.sys file" and also "Compatibility mode reduces overall system performace"...How do I get rid of this program. I have my Power Options set as: Power scheme: Home Turn off monitor: After 5 min Turn off hard disk: After 30 min Sys Standby: After 30 min Sys hibernate: After 1 hr My monitor USED to turn itself off after some inactivity and would recover with no problems after keyboard or mouse movement.     - Restore OE6 & MSN problems 6/27/2005 Iâ??m posting this on ME & MSN discussion groups. My platform is ME SP1 on a Dell 4190 with OEM version (5 yrs old) with all critical updates. Using Norton 2004 antivirus with monthly updates. Using dialup with 56k internal modem with MSN as my ISP. I havenâ??t added any new applications recently or made major changes. Iâ??ve updated to MSN9 6 months ago, but always had a problem with explorer hanging when using IE & MSN explorer simultaneously plus with logging off of MSN the following error occurred from a dialog box: App Name: msn.exe App Ver: 9.10.11.1703 Mod/Ver: 2.40.4515.0 Offset: 00025ff9 Mod Name: oleaut32.dll Iâ??ve sent the generated report to msn many times, but no response. Finally, I sent e-mail to MSN Customer Support & they suggested the following via return e-mail. 1. Check system resources, amount of RAM, Performance, etc. 2. Possible file corruption in either IE or MSN. 3. Restore IE to previous version, then download latest version from Microsoft. 4. De-install MSN9 & reinstall from customer CD. 5. Problem should be resolved When I tried number 3, it didnâ??t remove/restore completely (OE6 did remove, no mail), so I thought to do a system restore, but when I open the control panel, NOTHING APPEARS. I opened in the safe mode & was able to repair IE6, then when re-starting the system the control panel opens OK, but seems like the only problem, other than the original complaint, is only OE6 is still missing. The last restore point is May 10, 2005, not sure if I want to go that far back.     - Restore original file application Hi, I tried to open a .db file in an application I am using. The system asked me what application I wanted to attach to this. As it was a .db file, I chose Excel. This is wrong, and now I cannot undo it!! It is looking for Sybase ODBC driver and every time I try to change the file from excel to this, I run into the same brick wall. I have a backup of the .db file as a zip file, and every time I try to extract it, it seems to find the old one and it comes up as excel. I am quite frustrated by this and hope it is something that can be easily remedied, as so much work went into producing this data!! Help!! Thanks in advance.     - Active Desktop & Explorer Crash Out I have 4 win me machines in our enterprise. All of them seem to have timebombed, no so long ago, in that; a) Active desktop causes the machine to lock-up; b) Windows explorer, My computer etc. fail to run & then crash out; c) Anything explorer based seems to struggle to load. d) The clock freezes on load. The usual spybot checks (spybot S&D) & AV checks (Symantec) throw up nothing. My best solution would be to replace the OS....but I have no budget to undertake this at the moment.     - Default Save location... Whenever I attempt to save any new document or picture, the Save As location defaults to My Documents and My Documents/My Pictures, respectively.     - System clock jumps back Hi All........... I don't know if this is a Me problem or not, but here goes...........Every few weeks, I notice that all of a sudden my system clock has jumped back approximately one hour.........never do I notice it off by 5 minutes, or 15 or 30 etc etc........whenever I notice it it's always off by one hour.........I'm particularly sensitive to the time because I make frequent posts to other newsgroups, and it's obvious whenever I post if the time is off or not.................Is this a known Me thing, or maybe a virus that someone has heard of.........any fix?     - Weblink Not Loading I have ME and Adobe Reader 6.0.2a. Occasionally, when I click on a weblink, I get a blank page with a small rectangle in a corner, which rectangle has a red square in the upper left, a blue circle below and to the right, and a blue triangle below and to the left of that (as I view it). This would appear to me to be a PDF file which is not loading. I tried disabling the AVG firewall and allowing popups on Google taskbar, to no avail. Recently, this happened when I clicked on a link from an email I receive daily from an English newspaper, "the Telegraph." What could be the cause of the link not loading properly? I tried downloading the latest Adobe Reader for ME, 6.03 (7 does not work with ME), and got a message that I need to download 6.02 first; however, updating the AR on my C drive gives me the message that I have the latest version.     - How do I install XP on 2 computers at same time? I have 2 computers win98 SE. These are networked together thru a linksys router along with other XP computers.     - Scan Disk Hi, I am trying to run Scan Disk on my C drive. I have deleted all running programs except Explorer and Systray. But, it keeps stalling and when it stalls it freezes the whole system and the only way to get out of it is to switch off and re-boot. I don't know if it is relevant but I have noticed some new program names when I delete the running ones. 'Motive directory', 'Mediaaccess' and 'Mediaacck'. And I now often receive a warning that 'Motive Directory' has caused an error and will now close. Any suggestions gratefully received.     - Sound woes I have a M6VCG Biostar motherboard with onboard sound (VIA audio controller) recently the SOUND failed - I could get no sound at all - tried all combinations of fix including advice received here - with no luck at all. So I just tried to install a SoundBlasterlive card but could not get that working either, although it seemed to be installed ok with device reported as working properly. CD audio was ok through this card but nothing else worked. someone advised me to disable the onboard soundchip in the bios setup - could not see how to do this, as setup says "onchip sound = auto" with no option seeming to be available other than auto. anyway after a while I took the sblive card back out, rebooted, then, lo and behold, the on board sound started working again in all respects.     - Stuttering and Stalling Recently after my computer is on for about 10 minutes or longer the movement of my mouse will begin to stop and start, almost like when the mouse is dirty, but this is not the case.     - CD-R/RW Drive Problems Hi All...... I can't get my CD Writer Drive to recognize that there is a blank CD in it. I have tried for an hour now. It has never failed like this before. It keeps telling me to put a blank CD in it. I checked it with both Roxio and Music Match burning proggies. I checked Device Manager......all seems to be OK. But before I went away, I used MusicMatch to record a music CD and it was messed up halfway thru, which I blamed on the program coz I always use Roxio. I am wondering if this drive has bitten the dust. I put a recorded CD in it and it wouldn't read that either. Yet the DVD Rom drive which I play songs on did. Any thoughts?     - Display monitor COLOR gone CRAZY! Hi, I hope someone out there can help me! I noticed the other day that my monior color suddenly changed. I saw the color of my wallpaper dramatically darken and I now have an awful gray shadow, gray horizontal lines running across my screen, and a strange discoloration of everything that is displayed on my monitor screen. At that time, I tried changing the color display settings but this was to no avail. I basically tried everything I could thnk of to fix the problem but nothing worked. I thought my monitor was breaking down, so I foolishly ordered a new Dell monitor and after throwing out my old monitor and hooking up the new one the problem still persists. I again attempted to reinstall my display driver but that did nothing, then I tried readjusting the display pixels, but that didn't work either. I then uninstalled and REinstalled my video driver, but that did not work. I did an update driver search but could find none for my Windows ME operating system. I scanned my disk for errors, I did a registry fix for errors, I did a system restore, I did a disk defragmenter, rechecked my monitor settings, rechecked my pixel settings, checked my advanced display settings, etc.; nevertheless, nothing is working to remedy the problem.     - spybot problem During the install of the latest IE 5.5 update patch, Spybot's Resident Tea Timer popped up to block the registry change that the patch required. Screen froze up and I had to do a restart. When I examined the About IE it showed the update to be installed, but since the registry change was blocked I am now wondering if all is as it should be.     - popup blocker vs HOSTfile Need some advise. I've been using Adshield for blocking popups, and it does a pretty decent job. I've been wondering if I should delete Adshield and rely on the Host file for blocking the pop ups. I realize that I would have to edit the HOST file for the pop up ads and pages that I want to prevent to load when surfing. Is it recommended to rely soley on the HOST files reliability on blocking unwanted ads and\or pages or should I keep Adshield for this purpose.     - freeze on boot trying to fix pc for a friend. they have windows me...all i know really. on boot it goes great..until the windows ME bootscreen where along the bottom of the screen there is the wave like motion of blue colors moving, it does it for a while, then freeze's. i have tried a few things via a boot disk, that found on the net, but to no hope. have trie to boot in safe mode...nothing, just reboots pc or goes to ME bootscreen and freeze's. please help, my friend really need sthe comp up and running, reinstalling windows is not an option, Tag: Been getting alot of freeze ups lately... any ideas?     - USER.DAT -- How do you clean up / edit this file I recently purchased a used HP Pavilion/WIN ME system and I planned to give it to my nephew. I scaned the disk for foul language and came up with many hits all located in c:\windows\user.dat. There are foul references to .com' s .mpeg's .jpg's etc etc. Have tired using MS Wordpad to edit this file but no success. Also tried regedit, but can't seem to get to user.dat with it. While multitasking in Excel/Word/and on Internet I have been getting
frequent freeze ups and have to do "hot" (the power button) shut downs. I've
noticed: Explorer (not responding) in the Close Program window.
Any fixes out there. You folks always have come though.
