Only above half of text visible?
Hi,
A friend created a new website from our bridgeclub.
Very strangs that on some pages the letters are only seen by half.
Copying and pasting the sentence e.g. on a Word-doc they are fully seen.
Other collegues see the text as normal.
I am using IE6 and have never seen that problem on any onther web site.
Somebody any idea?
Thanks

Color Profiles
I am hoping someone has a better knowledge than me of the files in the
color folder.
It is my understanding that windows uses them to correct from a core point
for color accuracy of your monitor, printer, scanner, etc. Just how, I have
no idea, that is I don't know how the system calls them or what part of it
uses them.
They have been around since W95 to the best of my knowledge as I was having
an issue back then and even talked to Kodak, maker of many of them, and they
were of little help. They did offer to make me a custom ICC file, expensive.
Sometime since then PRF files also get added to the folder. One of them
belongs to my printer, but one is Compaq and I have nothing Compaq, so I
wonder if it is default installed. And whether the profiles for the hardware
get installed is an iffy situation. An old Sony monitor would not install
them, even though they were present. They could be manually installed. Then
Sony came out with an update that would install them.
Same issue with printer, although I see the profiles in the folder this
time, they are not associated to the printer if I check the properties,
color management. The color profiles associated with this printer window is
empty. Checking the profiles known for this printer, properties, associate
device is empty.
And as usual, it appears the profiles for my scanner did not get added to
the folder.
What prompted me to pursue this again is that I noticed no profile was
associated with the monitor under the color management of my video card.
Checking, the profile for the monitor was not in the folder. I installed it.
Most of the files in the color folder are ICC or ICM, but one specifically,
mpc5500.prf, name of my printer, seems to have a bad association by file
extention. The ICC and ICM open with unknown application, which I suspect is
correct, and have the proper icon.
The .prf files have been stepped on by something and it might be the IE6
upgrade. Properties show that it opens with "Internet Ratings and Local Us"
and it is a PICS Rules File. If I chose to open the file a "supervisor
password required" pops up. It says that it will install the Rules file into
the Content Advisor feature of Internet Explorer. (Cancel, glad it warned
me).
I'm really confused on these files and hoping someone can enlighten me.
TIA

Security Updates CD and Windows Update
Can anyone explain to me why, on a fresh install of Windows ME, after
installing the Security Updates CD (Feb. 2004), Windows Updates no longer
functions? I get there OK, but when I click to scan for updates, it stalls
at 0%... Forever. I've tried this twice, from clean install on, with the
same results. I've also installed Scripting Engine 5.6 and Repaired IE as
per instructions from Windows Update T-Shooter. Even installed Java runtimes
and force reinstalled IE6 SP1. No luck.

WinXP - or not?
At the last computer show I was ready to get my WinXP CD, when someone next
to me mentioned, that with all Windows Systems, except 'Win2000', there
would be a refusal to reinstall in case of a crash. For that specific reason
the Europeans (Germans) adopted the free Linux System instead and, happily
so. Does this reflect reality?
I already have the CD for the Linux System, to be installed on a single and
seperate 80GB HD.
Would or should I want more?

It worked and *Windows confirmed* the change at the second boot after the
change. What a pleasant discovery, Mike.
You deserve a trophy for that.
I knew that it worked earlier, quite earlier, but to see windows'
confirmation topped it off.
Thanks again, Mike.

Problems After Running Defrag
My laptop has been locking up after internet usage during shutdown. I
finally decided to run defrag over the weekend. I have owned the laptop
since 2001 and never ran defrag b-4 this past weekend. It took approx 1 hour
for defrag to complete. Now when I open internet and try to type in e-mail
certain letters such as D, F and G executes commands as if you were hitting
control and then letter (ex. ctrl B=Bold). I cannot type because when I type
the letter, the keyboard executes certain commands. I thought it was
concentrated only in aol internet but then tried to type in Word and the same
thing happened. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so what did
you do to fix the problem. Comments are welcome. Please HELP!

USB Mass Storage Device
Hello, I'm experiencing the following problem:
Scandisk reports the presence of mismatched FATs on a freshly
formatted external USB HDD. When repaired Scandisk reports that it has
fixed the problem. However, the problem persists on the next running
of Scandisk. The same result is obtained for multiple HDDs.
The following is known:
Device Manager does not report any problems and has two relevant
entries - Disk Drives: USB connected HDD is correctly identified and
shown to be working properly & USB Controller: USB Mass Storage Device
(usbstor.sys) is present and shown to be working properly.
Windows Explorer lists the connected USB HDD (Drive F in my case) and
allows full access to it. However, data transfer is pains-takenly slow
(i.e. hours to run a thorough Scandisk on a small 2.5GB drive).
Is this a known problem with a known solution? Tag: Ad Aware update 161 Tag: 288269
Need DOS help
Hi folks,
I'm writing a batch file and need to check for the presence of a folder.
I find that the "IF EXIST ...." syntax only works for text in WinME.
I can use this in WinXP but NOT in ME
IF EXIST C:\TEST GOTO END
:START
RENAME C:\START\SAMPLE.TXT JONES.TXT
GOTO DONE
:END
ERASE C:\TEST\XXXX.TXT YYYY.TXT
GOTO DONE
:DONE
EXIT
Running this batch file in WinXP works fine but in WinME it does NOT
follow the directions. It simply drops to the next line after the IF
EXIST statement.
Same thing happens if I use IF NOT EXIST - just goes to the nest line.
Can someone advise on how to check if a folder is there and how to jump
to one or more places in the batch file for other actions?

Where is my file 2
Would someone please take a look at my thread of "where is my file".
Maybe you know the answer and can also tell me why I seem to have tilted
Mike.
Not sure if it is related, but I ran across something strange this morning.
Browsed to archive where I keep some data.
Specifically a folder that contains data and forms for Vietnam Vets and
noticed a file name that I never created, except unknowingly.
DDCC7300
No extension even. I did a search for *DDCC7300*.* to see if I might have
passed over a file of same or similar name with pointer and accidentally
saved to that name in a different folder. It only returned the one file. So
I have no idea how it came about. But if I open it is an excel file. An
older version of a database that I have since added more sheets and data to.
Note, my original thread was about search, and am now double bewildered.
Any ideas to how this file came about or my stupidity about search are
appreciated.

Looking for Security Software for Win ME
Hi there,
My 6-year-old Win ME computer was happily running some ISP supplied AV and
firewall software until the ISP upgraded it to a newer version which is no
longer supported on an ME system. They no longer issue or support the "old"
version as it was with a different company.
So, I'm hunting around for the basic stuff to put on my ME system, i.e.
Antivirus
Firewall
Antispyware
Antiphishing
etc.
Just because these will be used on an older computer I would prefer to use
free stuff. I have hunted around on the internet, but it seems that Win ME
supported software is getting harder to find.
Suggestions and recommendations would be much appreciated. The system is a
433 MHz Celeron with 192 MB RAM. So don't want to install applications that
will use much RAM.
Thanks in advance!
By the way, I need to get rid of fragments from previously installed apps,
what would be a good program to use?

It does seem that the frequency and the size of his posts are
