I installed version 1.03 on a computer running Win98SE and it takes forever
and a day for it to load. Once I get it running, it's OK but it sure didn't
take that long to load before. The computer has 512MB RAM and an AMD Athlon
1.333 GB processor.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try uninstalling it, re-booting and then re-installing it again. See if that
improves things.
It runs quite normally here.

I tried that and also ran Spybot and a virus scan. I even deleted the
original setup download and downloaded it again ...

I don't any further suggestions but wonder if it is 'stalling' during the
"Loading Definitions.." or "Initializing data.." phases. (The little box,
before the main window)

Yes, it is and it takes forever. After it loads, it acts normally.

Still scratting... When you deleted (uninstalled) did you check to see that
there were no remnants from previous installs floating around your C:\
drive?

There are still some Ad-Aware 6 folders and bits on mine, in spite of it
'supposedly' clearing previous versions.

Also does a defrag improve things?

This is where I smartly bat it across to Silj - he's the Ad-Aware expert <g>

BTW - have you still got a copy of 1.01 or 1.02 or even 6 - might be worth a
try at 'downgrading'

Good luck

Fully uninstall the *possibly* defective copy of Ad-aware.
Do not use Add/Remove Programs > navigate the "unwise.exe" in the
Ad-aware Programs File Folder > [C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal]
Double-click on the "unwise" file, select "custom" uninstall, at the next screens,
you will
be prompted what to delete, select "all" at each screen.
Reboot, try installing Ad-aware again.
There is a tweak in Ad-aware to not use much CPU while scanning but you're not
processor challenged so that shouldn't be an issue.

Good luck and thanks to Mart for the help ;)

Well, I did what you suggested and it still takes 3 minutes for AdAware to
load and when I do an update, it downloads the update and then freezes. If I
do a C A D and close it and reopen it (another three minutes), it says there
are no updates so I assume the update got downloaded.

Once it's up, I can configure it and use it and it only came up with
"negligible" results.

Any more suggestions other than upgrading to XP?

Thanks,

Alias

Alias, not that I can offer a 'solution' but it *might* help Siljaline or
someone at Lavasoft, if you can identify at which point the delay occurs.

It stalls at the little box before the main window and it says "Loading
Definitions". Sorry I didn't clarify that. It also stalls when it gets to
100% when downloading new definitions.

... I wonder if the fact that the OS is in Spanish would have anything to do
with it?

You may have a corrupt copy or an unidentified issue which should be reported
to Lavasoft! <http://www.lavasoftsupport.com>

Sounds serious and *may* be unrelated, you should take your issue to Lavasoft.
You may have super-hidden Spyware that is limiting the functionality of the program.

It functions fine after it opens and on another computer of a friend of
mine, also with 98SE but in English, it's the same problem. Do you know
anyone who has 98SE who hasn't had a problem with it?

How do I contact Lavasoft?
