Somewhat recently, I keep getting prompted to connect to the internet.
This usually happens when I use Windows explorer and click on a folder.
Each time I click on another folder, I am prompted. It also happens when
I go into the Control Panel. It appears as though when a new window
is opened, it attempts to connect.

I have installed spy-bot, Ad-Aware and a firewall. The only think that
the firewall seems to be picking up that is trying to connect is
LOADQM.EXE and QMGR.DLL (I'm assuming part of Windows Update).
Windows update in the control panel is set to manually check.

I do not like having control over whatever this is and am quite concerned
with what it is trying to do, even if it is the update process.

Any suggestions as to what it is and/or how I can disable it or find out
what it is would be greatly appreciated.

-Paul

Probably the firewall is trying to connect.

Thanks for the thought.

I installed the firewall to see if I could find out what is
attempting to connect.

Paul,

Windows Explorer is heavily linked to Internet Explorer. You might
check Internet Options under Internet Explorer/Tools, and select the
Connection tab. Make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected.

That is what I would do. The option to dial or not dial
is up to the user, as this points out.

It should be mentioned that a lot of people that got the
recent e-mail viruses reported the same
symptom.....computers dialing in to the Internet without
any prompting at all.

Just started using AdAware....nice software......

"Never dial a connection" has been selected. Another fact... by Paul

The suggestions so far have been good and I
have appreciated them. I however
have already incorporated them. Even though
"Never dial a connection" is selected is selected it does
not change the fact that something is attempting to connect
without my consent.

Norton Anti-Virus does not seem to pick up anything.

One interesting thing is that it appears as though it
needs to connect once a day. If I allow it to connect
then it does not attempt for the rest of the day. It will
attempt the next day. If I advance the computers date
by one or more days it believes that it needs to connect
again.

It would seem to me that there would be some way
for me to tell what process is attempting to dial. I could
then potentially find the culprit.

Hmmmm.

Thanks for the comeback and any additional thoughts
would be great.
