    - cannot get ms dos window to open Icons are disappearing from folders and the Start button menus after being opened previously, so I want to reformat my computer, but cannot get an msdos window to come up. There also doesn't seem to be any menu option anywhere in System tools to reformat. I assume I have a virus? Can someone help me figure out how to reformat my c drive? thanks alot!     - windows not running I am using windows me and it has stopped running for some reason. I only have access to the internet thru my instant access button on keyboard. I have no start button or toolbar at bottom of screen. The only thing that is on my screen is my screensaver. I can't even get to properties by right clicking on screensaver. This started about 2 days ago. I thought it was my monitor because the colors on monitor went haywire. But now monitor is fine but still no windows. Can someone please help me.     - System Restore When I try to create a restore point, I get a message saying it can't create it, that I need to restart my computer.     - windows not restarting The Ctrl+Alt+Del function no longer restarts Windows, just crashes it; a reset is then necessary. The "Restart" option in the Start menu also fails; this simply causes a standby-like state in which the hard disks remain on.     - Add/Remove program For some reason my windows stopped keeping track of newly installed programs! As a result, I am not able to remove/uninstall many of unneeded programs from my computer - they do not show up in the Add/Remove programs window and they do not have an uninstaller file themselves either. Does anyone out there know 1) How to make windows start keeping track of programs when they are being installed? 2) Is there any way I can retrieve uninstallation data for the programs which already have been installed?     - display and freeze problems I have two problems :- The first is that anything which appears on the screen has a dark line or ghosting across the full width of the screen. This occurs on desktop and in all programs. I am running ME with XP installed in a separate partition. This happens in both. I tried the monitor, using my own leads, on a different PC and everything was OK. I have deleted and re-installed the monitor and display driver but that didn't help. The second problem, which seemed to start at the same time, is the PC freezing randomly and the only way to correct it is switching off/back on. System restore didn't cure either problem. I had installed XP to try to cure the problem, since it didn't I decided to delete this using partition magic. The computer locked up part way through and I have now lost D drive ( system restore ) completely. Before I resort to using the restore disks to start afresh I would be grateful if anyone had any ideas or advice on the problems. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.     - Starts or jumps to Safe mode I use Windows ME and often my computer starts in safe mode and I have great trouble to get a normal bootup. When I do get a normal boot up, at times while working, the computer will throw itself into safe mode. I don't use Norton Anti-virus, and haven't setup a restore point.     - Suppress "Safe Mode" option at startup For security reasons, I want to be able to make it so that users can't boot into safe mode. They should not have any options as to any mode to boot into (including DOS mode) I have a mixed Windows ME and Windows 2000 Pro environment.     - How to password protect folders locally I want to be able to password protect the 'my documents' folder so that if anyone else uses the computer, they won't have access to them. I haven't been able to find a way to do this on a local level. I know that in XP, all you have to do is create multiple users and they are limited to viewing their own "my documents" folder unless they have admin privileges. Is there a way to do this in ME? I did set up another user, and when using the "my documents" icon, I cant see anything, but if I view the "my documents" folder in explorer, then I can see the other users documents. I'd be willing to do this any way that would work. I'm not attached to having a multiple user setup because I am the main person who uses the pc.     - MS DOS compatibility Good Afternoon, (I'm sorry if this is a double post - tried a couple hours ago and not showing up yet) My drive a and c are using msdos compatibility mode file system. The compatibility mode paging help screen says that a file cannot be read either in autoexec or configsys so is running in this mode. Says to remove programs recently installed or the files. How can I find the files? I already removed the most recently installed programs. That didn't help. I am running on 73% free resources. Any help will be greatly appreciated.     - WinMe-Clipboard Viewer The .clp files are associated with Clipbrd.exe, when double clicked the .clp file, it opens the Clipboard Viewer but does not list the contents of the .clp file. The Clipboard Viewer window opens blank. The saved .clp files are of URL addresses. By using the command File > Open, it lists the contents ok.     - ms dos compatibility mode Good Morning, My system is running in this mode. When I go into safe mode, my computer properties, it tells me drive a and c ar using that file system. The help tells me to look under the capatibility mode paging reduces overall performance help. This help tells me the system cannot understand a file name in athe autoexec or the configsys? Tell sme to remove that file or remove the program. I removed the recently added programs but has made no difference. I don't know how to find the file causing the problem.     - Soundblaster on same IRQ as modem-problems I bought a new modem and soundblaster PCI. When I loaded them, the computer put both of them on the same IRQ.     - .vbs script file problem I have a bunch of .vbs script files from Billsway and Doug Knox which I use on occasion and I have just discovered that almost all of them don't work anymore. I occasionally write little .vbs scripts for reminders and these work fine as well. I have done some searching in the KB and haven't really found anything that pertains specifically to my problem and what I have found is pretty much beyond me. I have discovered that the error "80040154" apparently refers to "class not registered" and I have found that a newer version of WindowsScriptingHost 5.6 (published 06/09/03) is available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=0A8A18F6-249C-4A72- BFCF-FC6AF26DC390&displaylang=en I was thinking of reinstalling the version of WindowsScriptingHost 5.6 that I have installed now (downloaded and installed 08/02) or installing the newer version.     - Shutting down PC After using the computer for about an hour, all programs are closed and I click on the shutdown button the screen goes dark (not completely black) as though it is ready to shutdown. After a few seconds it does go black and shortly thereafter it starts to reboot. The only way I can shut down is to hit the off button as it is ready to start the reboot. I studied all your suggestions, then downloaded and installed StartMan, then used it to check each one of my Startup entries. I disabled at least a dozen of them. Since downloading updates 2 weeks ago, I can no longer
open attachments. Clicking on the little paperclip shows
me the name(s) of the attachments and the option to save
them but absolutely nothing happens when I double click on
them (this used to open them). Also, the "open
attachment" option under FILE in the upper part of the
screen is white and not responsive.

Help!!
