Is anyone familiar with the free antivirus program *AntiVir*?
Every once in a while it 'hangs' for me at startup in Windows ME.
Should I be loking for a different and more reliable program and if so,
which one?
Otherwise the program suits me just fine.

I have no experience with AntiVir, however if you are in the market
for a free replacement, I highly recommend Avast (www.avast.com).
I've had for a couple of years and have had no complaints.

I dislike Avast intensely for it's interface, and yet others like it.

Hey Harry,

Personally, I think if an AV progs hangs then ditch it. Maybe it's not
entirely compatible with the particular OS in use and is not a bad program
per se, but it's insufficiently reliable for your purposes. I use AVG Free
Edition and, like many others, have no problems with it.

Mike, Heather and many others - Richard for one? - use E-trust Anti-Virus,
which you pay for. It is regarded quite highly on the AV groups, as are
Kaspersky and Eset's NOD. E-Trust has a free trial - funnily enough included
with the Windows Security Update cd (a seperate cd). Not certain if the
trial period has been extended but it lasts at least to the end of the year.
I believe Heather mentions in her "EZ Armor & Update of EZ Trust...... "
thread where to download it, but I'll send you that cd too if you want to
give it a try.

I definitely think so, Shane. You are very generous. The performance of those
CD's (assuming they all work alike)
is quite remarkable to me. I am still marvelling over the way the first CD
did its job. So I am game.
I am well pleased to be part of this group.

I did get myself into trouble, didn't I. Now I don't know, whom to listen
to. I let Solomon be my guide and try every one of those mentioned by all of
you, Dapper Dan, Shane and Heather. The one that appeals most to me, I shall
keep. That ought to be satisfactory to everybody.
Thanks for your inspirations.

Harry,

Of AVG, Avast, and eTrust AV (EZ Armor) I'm sure the latter is best. From
the link Heather supplied it appears that while the offer expires 2nd Jan,
you get it free for 12 months from when you first install it and go online
and register.

While the Windows Security Update cd is kind of impressive the way it
autoruns and installs 90% or so of the updates ME requires, the EZ Armor cd
is just another software cd and you really won't be getting anything you
don't get downloading from Heather's link. If you burned the download to cd
it'd be identical, so I'll send it to you if downloading a file that size is
a problem or you want it on cd but don't have the capability to make your
own. Let me know if you still need the cd.

Cheers Figgs, that's a useful link to have. So, in fact, if you installed it
Jan 1st 2005 you could run it for free until Jan 2nd 2006. That clears up a
deal of confusion this end!

The page is accessible from http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/

....and the offer for the free 12 month subscription ends February 01, 2005.

You're right, the clock doesn't start to tick until you install it. ;)

Thanks, Puss......I stumbled over it somehow or other....not quite sure,
grin. I was actually looking around the EZ Trust website I think and
somehow found it.....but I figured it might still be on the MS website, so
had a boo.

On one hand, they say current users can't download it in from the MS
website, and then let us download it in others. Go figure!! But the tech
from CA knew I had just downloaded it. Ahh, the sweet mysteries of computer
life!!

Shane,

I was just looking at the eTrust EZ Armor web site and found that they do
distinguish between the free (or LE version) and the regular version. The
only difference is in the firewall software. Take a look at the following
for details:

http://crm.my-etrust.com/CIDocument.asp?KDId=80&GUID=4E4D684FA4664E0CAF85E71106FB8E8D

Hmmm.....not sure about the UK date format. :)

Cheers,

Hmmm, I guess the EZ Trust tech didn't know what he was talking about!!

Freebie Lite firewall is the free Zone Alarm. Pay version is obviously the
ZAPro version......

Thanks for finding that.....their website is a horror to go thru......which
was one of my complaints to them. I also asked *can you separate the
firewall from the antivirus*......No.

HOWEVER.....on the MS CD.....aren't the two of them separate??

I don't recall whether they're seperate on the cd or after you extract the
files from the .exe on the cd. Whichever, you *can* install the AV without
installing the firewall.

As Shane said, you can install only one or the other even if you download
the combined package. It's not very intuitive - you need to un-check the
first selection (EZArmor) before you can then select either the antivirus or
firewall portion.

Without reading any of the other replies yet, I can answer your's here,
Shane.
Obviously I will not be needing the CD and follow your advice by downloading
it directly.
Thanks.

Shane, I am in real trouble now. My computer was getting a lttle overheated
and in trying to connect an additional fan (a case fan), I couldn't find no
better connection than to splice it to the speaker wires. They looked alike
on the outside, but when I put the front cover back on, I heard a sound in
one of my speakers, winding up in a cracking noise and then nothing.
When I pushed the power button, everything was dead.
In all probability something inside on the motherboard burned out, or could
it have been anything less ctitical?
I am resigned to the fact, this is the end of my machine, unless anyone has
a better idea.
Should I enter a specific post to this problem?

Harry, old and completely shattered.

Harry,

Maybe a fuse blew. Is the computer still in warranty? You'd be surprised
what you can do to a computer without invaliddating the warranty - though
you may have gone too far with this one. But you might be able to get it
fixed free or at reduced cost. Otherwise I would suggest taking it to the
local reliable pc repair shop. I certainly can't say, from here, what's
likely to be damaged. Motherboard, Power Supply Unit? Sound Card - though
that wouldn't stop the computer at least beeping. You get no beeps?

This computer was put together by my son as a bare bones project, no
warranty, Shane.
I am suspecting the power supply and probably will attempt to get one to
find out.
I wouldn't know where to look for a blown fuse and taking it to a shop is
not frugal, because of the prices they charge. It's less expensive to either
assemble or buy a new one, maybe even a rebuilt one?
Just wish me luck, I surely can use it.

Harry, old and downhearted.

Sure, Harry, labour puts I guess half as much again on the price. But, for
instance, a new motherboard is a good deal cheaper than a whole new
computer - if it's the motherboard, which is probably the worst-case
scenario.

Anyway, good luck. And remember, even your own static electricity can fry
your pc's components. If you're going inside, use a wrist strap (and keep
the power cord plugged in but the power turned off at the wall socket -
unless you're replacing the PSU, of course).

Shane:

I've never had any problems working inside my PC, just unplugging in back of
the computer and sometimes not even that. But that's very risky and not done
on purpose.
I will have the power pack checked earlier in the day
and take it from there. I am somewhat confident things will work out
allright.
The wristwrap is good caution, but I never knew to put it into practice.
Best to get used to it.
Keep your fingers crossed, will you?
Thank you.

Harry, old and long overdue.
