    - Graphics card driver installation Hello: I have a Compaq Deskpro with a Rage ProTurbo AGP 2X graphics card. I installed an "alternate" driver provided by ATI that is supposed to add OpenGL functionality to this old graphics card, but Starry Night Pro, the only application I have that uses OpenGL, still reports that "OpenGL failed to initialize." I see no other indication that I have it at all. I understand that OpenGL itself is part of Windows; is that true? I was unable to uninstall the original driver as it didn't show up in the Add/Remove Programs list and I couldn't find any associated 63-character registry entries as discussed in the MS support article on the subject; but I installed the new driver anyway. Now everything seems to work right, and I have features I didn't before; I just didn't get OpenGL. And I have a mixture of the two drivers appearing in the registry. Is that likely to be the reason I'm missing OpenGL? If I uninstall this new driver and reinstall the original one, could I then get it unstalled properly?     - How to get rid of My folders???? I've just had it with My Documents. Every time I open Windows Explorer, it defaults to My Documents. The software that came bundled with my scanner wants to put everything in My Pictures. Word looks for files in My Documents. Windows Media Player wants to look in My Videos for files to play. When I plug my digital camera in, My Camera pops up. I don't know anybody who uses the My ... folders. It is the most idiotic and obnoxious thing Microsoft ever came up with.     - How do I use a caddy? Recently my laptop had to be replaced because the problem was un-fixable. The repair shop was very accomodating and returned my old HDD with my new laptop, as half of my degree is on it. Unfortunately I was unable to perform a neat exchange of the old for the new HDD, so had to invest in a 'caddy'. This is where my problem lies: I have thus far been unable to find how to open the old HDD through the USB system. I'm not sure I'm making myself clear, but if you could help me I would be most grateful. A CD was included in the caddy pack, but proves unnecessary as the software is apparently already installed in ME and XP [OSs]. I was told a programme should open and run immediately after connection - but nothing happens. If it would be possible, please could you let me know, step by step, how to open my HDD? Thank you.     - Newsgroup problem A bizarre thing has happened. I am unable to post to the microsoft.public.windowsxp.general newsgroup. Outlook Express says it's sent but I never see it.     - Internet hangs Far too often when I surf the Net and click on a link, the computer will hang somewhere through the download. This is more than 50% of the times. Quite irritating. C+A+D does nothing. But if I care to wait about 30 seconds or so, it'll dehang, and I can carry on to hang again on the next few link clicks. Any suggestions?     - ME freeze during startup Hi, My ME system is hanging during startup everytime. I power on, the system runs it's normal start routines, then comes up showing the plain blue wallpaper type screen, but no icons appear. The machine continues to work for 10 seconds or so after the screen appears, and then it freezes with the "hour glass" mouse icon. No error messages are shown. I attempted to boot from my system CD but was unsuccessful, however, I was able to boot from my Norton CD which did a scan of the C drive which proved negative. I do not have an emergency boot disk / starup disk. I woudl like to get my system back to a level that woudl allow me to get my data offloaded, or be in a position to do an online upgrade to XP Home.     - Blank Blue Screen My dad said that his computer hung the other night and even <ctrl><alt><del> would not work, so he powered the computer off. When he brought it back up the next day, all he gets is a blank blue screen. (No Tool bar, no Icons). Not the blue screen of death, because there are not any error messages on it. The mouse pointer does work. Also <ctrl><alt><del> does work, showing zero programs running. So we know Explorer is not running. Howerever the computer can be shutdown normally this way. The system restore does not work....I used article 279736 (How to Start the System Restore Tool from a Command Prompt). Since, I cannot get into Windows, I had to do the options from the command prompt. So the next step was to reload Windows ME. I've tried the reload 4 times, and all 4 times it appears to load everything properly (takes about 30 minutes to do this) but when Windows ME starts, I'm, back to the same blank blue screen. So the next step I tried was to run msconfig. I can get this to work by changing the system.ini file and pointing the shell=progman.exe. Run msconfig from the Program Manager, and boot up the computer in the diagnostic mode. When I do this most of the time the Windows ME will come up in a 640 X 480 X 16 mode. It is not in safe mode at this time, because all of the icons populate the screen. However, most of the tray icons do not load. I cannot change the screen settings because it wants to reboot, and if I reboot it will give me the blank blue screen again, unless I bring it up in diagnostic mode. Also, when I bring up the computer in safe mode, all I have is the blank blue screen with "Safe Mode" in the four courners. I have tried to bring up the computer selecting the option to create a \bootlog.txt. But I cannot find the bootlog.txt file. It should be under c:\bootlog.txt right? Either the computer is not creating the file, or I am not looking for it in the right place. Any help would be apprecaiated with this crazy Blank Blue Screen. Thank You.     - Windows Explorer I cannot get the file heirarchy to display in the left hand column of windows explorer - when I click on the folders button, I just get a blank column or the file and folder search column comes up.     - Windows protection error while using external sound card I'm experiencing problems when I try to record music using the line-in entry with my external Sound Blaster Extigy card. Most of the time I end up with a "BSOD" telling me I got a windows protection error, that my system is halted and I need to restart. I've updated my soundblaster drivers, I've cleaned-up my system (scandisk, defrag, PC-Doctor, you name it...), I've checked on microsoft support but to no avail. Being no computer buff, I'm very reluctant to go all the way to reformatting the whole thing and re-install all my programs & hardware. My guess is that I may be experiencing some kind of conflict (hardware and/or software related). Is there a way, a kind of diagnosis program I can use that could track this down ?     - Outlook Express - Signature I have Windows ME and Outlook Express. When I compose a message I want to add a 'fancy' signature which I prepared in Word. I end the message, click Insert - and Signature on File. However the signature comes out in Text. How can I store in an HTML file?     - Computer won't restart I am running Windows ME and when I go to the start button and hit shutdown and the box pops ups to choose shutdown, restart or standby and I choose startup, the screen flickers (and it's very subtle) and it just goes back to the desktop. I have scanned for virus's and there are 17 (thanks to the young'uns!)in the restore files, but when I disable system restore and am supposed to reboot the system doesn't allow it. Now, when I use the drag & drop facility of Windows Explorer to move a document from one folder to another, it leaves a back up copy of the document in the original folder.     - Windows ME shutdown fault Often when I come to shutdown my PC I am presented with a blue screen and an error message along the lines that there is an error and I will need to reboot the computer. I then have to push the reset button, the PC restarts, goes through its boot up routine (including Scandisk)after which I am usually able to shut it down normally.
