Vista/w2k8/Aero etc
Well, I think I've reached a conclusion - in a telling timeframe.
I think the Aero theme is very well done. That glassy look, more so with the
Sidebar running, is superb - the best cosmetic job Microsoft have ever done
(imo)! And when I had the Sidebar running, I put gadgets on it giving top to
bottom - the countdown to the release of Server 2008, the Vista Orb clock, a
small BBC News 24 feed - continuous live BBC News playing on the desktop in
a tiny, little box - bloody marvellous! In the same category as having music
playing while you work or surf? Beneath that I had - lets see...oh yes, a
weather feed, set for this town and visually responding to the diurnal
cycle, a calendar - since T-ClockX which I've used almost since Win ME came
out, won't install in NT6.x - and I cannot abide seeing just the time down
there! And a Google search box on the bottom (had the Deskbar originally,
but there are issues with Google in 2K8 beta3. For one the toolbar crashes
IE7).
There was another Sidebar column but the second time I installed the toy,
the 'gadgets' rearranged at every boot, pushing most of the ones I wanted to
show by default, off of the desktop. How much this is a beta bug, I don't
know. There is one bug - apparently also in RTM Vista and waiting for SP1 to
hopefully fix - where the prog that pops up to tell you the one you tried to
execute has stopped responding, does this way too soon. I was quite
surprised actually when it got it right! I had come to expect that the prog
certainly had not stopped responding and all one had to do was wait a little
longer...that was SpywareBlaster, actually. Spybot S&D installs and
apparently works fine in (64-bit) Server 2008 beta3, Vista's brother - as
does Javacool's MRU-Blaster. But not SpywareBlaster. I'd say it's about
split down the middle which progs I've run in ME/XP for years, still work in
64-bit NT6.x. Not bad going?
Anyway, clearly I am taken by the 'Vista Desktop Experience' (which is an
extra available to Server 2008). Yet when one thinks of 1 GB of RAM as on
the low side, something isn't right. Priorities are askew, I think. I had
256MB RAM for quite a few years and have just moved up to 1G and I really
don't intend to swallow the line that it isn't enough anymore.
Joan in particular might be interested in this: yes, Aero is really pretty -
but it is still eye candy, and the appeal of it dies down as rapidly as all
other eye candy appeal does. That's why it's called 'eye candy' isn't it -
it's got no substance, long term it only really appeals to the shallow.
Well, that's what I believe anyway. I don't think you are shallow, Joan, so
if you liked Aero long term, I'd have to adjust my beliefs - but I don't
think I'll have to. Oh, you may be comfortable with it - but that isn't
enough. 'Comfortable with it' is 'faint praise' where Aero is concerned.
I used the Luna theme (XP default) for about a year - then reverted to how I
have it now - looking as much like 9x as it's possible to make it! That
isn't because I think 'conservative' is the way to go - it's because I think
the style of 9x is the most natural for comfortable, relaxed computer
operation. Back in the mid-90's they weren't looking to do things
differently, they were looking to do them efficiently. Hardly any time
before, it had all been command line computing (and limited mouse
operation - but that was building towards Windows, it was part of the
process that became 9x). Then there was Windows 1/2/3.x - these were
developers feeling their way. Jumping straight to 9x would be Creationism in
microcosm. Dosshell and the myriad of Office apps that used the mouse, in
DOS, and then pre-9x Windows, were the evolution of 9x. And then they got it
right, it all (more-or-less) came together. And after all it surely isn't
*that* difficult to figure out what the most ergonomic way to open a program
is, with a rectangle less than a foot-and-a-half to play with?
But with XP they were no longer trying to improve the user experience per
se, but to vary it enough that they could sell Windows again. And now
they've repeated that with Vista. But the interfaces are more and more
confusing, because controls are less where you'd expect them to be now -
because that's where they were, but now they've been moved!
This can easily be dismissed as just my pov - but it seems inescapably
logical to me - unless you suppose that either where to put things on the
screen is actually quite complicated (and it's taken them approaching a
decade and a half to figure out what personally I don't think should take
however many dozen dozen brilliant minds work for Microsoft, to figure
out) - or you might hypothesise that there is more than one (or two, or is
it three?) possible maximum ergonomic arrangements for the desktop and
window elements. Maybe I just feel a little more lost with each new
offering, because that's what happens when you get old, and I'm getting
there! Either way - as I already claimed the other day - they make all this
stuff for the kids - and we know what most of the kids are into nowadays! I
mean, we can be thankful it doesn't come with Crazy Frog sounds - but it
will! It will! It'll get there!
I wonder if New Labour banned firearms because they'd been given a preview
of what was to come?
I abandoned Luna several years ago, but to use Aero you have to use
effectively the same Start Menu - how much is similar to XP is more striking
than how much is different, I feel. Windows are another thing altogether. Of
course Vista/Server 2008, in the age of DOT Net are built like big web
sites. I don't like it - the new Windows Explorer, I mean. Oh, you get used
to it - but it's too much of the same. Making everything web is like losing
the seperation between work and home. I like working in Explorer as distinct
from the internet, in 9x, or here in XP. It is like getting back home,
putting on your slippers, relaxing. I don't think they understand that at
the global conglomerates. Like so many people seem unable to comprehend that
not everybody cares for 3D games, and sounds that belong in a video arcade.
Not everyone drinks so much coffee they have the shakes and not everyone is
so driven by the neurotic fear of failure that the only way they can relax
is by snorting a line or two and going to a club. We live in a world that
respects the workaholic as industrious and conscientious, when actually he's
half-mad and frequently breathtakingly shallow. But we let him design our
world (which is about as smart as putting the vain and power-obsessed in
high office).
I say 'he', 'him' etc. Women don't do a lot wrong. Or it pales into
insignificance once the men arrive! Most guys are idiots - but most women
cheer them on just the same! Anyhow it is notable that the proportion
responsible for the stupidity that oppresses us all, originates in the male
of the species. So if any girlies object to my use of the masculine here,
the answer is, I suspect, gender reassignment.
It doesn't matter if Windows Explorer looks like Internet Explorer
(*Windows* Internet Explorer!) to those who are happy to work 16 hours a
day - who tell themselves that work *is* play. They don't notice that all
day every day it's the same thing, relentless and uniform. There is no pro
to the reduction of variety - it's all con.
Windows XP is sufficiently like 9x as to be an improvement by virtue of
greater stability. In numerous ways the better stability of the NT kernel
can be appreciated. And you can make it look sufficiently like 9x that the
only real anti-XP argument is Product Activation/Validation (which makes
itself felt mostly on 56k dial-up. For most broadband users it would be
entirely painless if not for the requirement to click thrice where not so
long ago we only had to click once. The policy wanks at Microsoft presumably
think the anti-piracy message is best delivered by rubbing all of our noses
in it. It must be so, for I haven't shat on the carpet in at least three
years!).
In Windows Classic style - particularly with Win ME Plus's More Windows
theme, which enlarges the fonts - and in fact I uncheck all but the
Window/font size option, to get the XP Windows Classic theme, only more
readable - you have, I reckon, the pinnacle of the Windows Operating
System's look, to date. For as gorgeous as the full-blown Aero theme is,
what it needs in the long run is to be easy on the eye. I can't help
thinking that eventually - possibly sooner rather than later - I'll
reconfigure Server 2008 to Windows Classic. Then I'll really see the benefit
of 1G RAM, I guess! But if, after a couple of months you disable Aero, what
do you really need that much RAM for?
Hey, we can drink the tap water again - as long as it's boiled! I finally
tipped the 2 gallons in the bucket down the sink today (there was at least 1
dead insect in it).
So, most of us eventually end up using Vista having bought machines with,
say, 2G of RAM. And after a couple of months most of us turn off Aero - and
the Sidebar (the BBC News feed gets annoying quickly when all of a sudden
you need to concentrate!). So what do we have machines with 2G of RAM, for?
Well, the semi-conductor industry's rude health for one, I s'pose!
Presumably that produces as much deadly poison as it ever did? I wonder
who'll be the first to have their house flooded in the vicinity of the
landfill where they dump old PCBs and silicon chips? Probably anyone in the
UK. I'm sure the only reason they're starting to get exercised about
recycling is to make room for other nation's toxic waste!
Vista is a holiday. Somewhere different to go for a few weeks. Then it's
back to the familiar.
His name is Casey.

Help with Spybot (if you can & don't mind)
Ran Spybot tonight (does an automatic update) Downloaded update info file.
Afterwards...
Error message reads:
"There were problems in the include file C:\PROGRAM FILES\SPYBOT -

After I press on 'OK', the program runs.
The 'Includes errors' file reads:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY\Includes\Beta.sbi |

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SPYBOT - SEARCH & DESTROY\Includes\Beta.sbi | Goldun.IESwap

Did a reboot, same error message.
After reboot, it did a ScanDisk stating it detected it was not shut down
properly, although I did.
What does it all mean and what do I do to stop it?
Any ideas?

WinME suggestions wanted..
I am looking for advice on transferring an existing WinME system to another
(preferrably NEW) set of hardware.
I have an older WInME pc (which I was planning to retire and "convert" to
Linux) but I feel that the whole pc needs serious replacement.
Particularly, the video subsystem is showing age (at boot up the characters
are jumbled(1), and sometime the screen boots to BLANK(2)). I can fix (1)
with a simple ctrl-alt-del at bootup. But when (2) happens, it's the most
annoying since the next boot is only possible in SafeMode and 16 colours!
The latter happend recently; I ended up re-installing the older WinME
drivers for the video card - and it wasn't easy! (originally I had upgraded
the drivers to the latest Nvidia ones - but those are the ones that NOW
start to cause problems) The video subsystem is AGP via an external card.
The exisiting pc doesn't have an integrated video.
I still really need to use WinME for a little while. It's my ICS machine
that allows dialup sharing for another pc. And.. quite frankly, I'm used
to using it as is. A complete change over to Linux would stall me.
So.. I'm fishing for opinions on what would be a good strategy for
migrating WinME to a fresh set of hardware. I am leary on just using
someone's old pc which may or may not have problems of its own.
There were two approaches I was thinking might work:
[1] Barebone kit. This one inspires me: http://tinyurl.com/2pughc If that
link doesn't cooperate, try this one:
http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=qAXQ110sLGI&offerid=101323.3202691&type=2&subid=0
Or.. just go to http://tigerdirect.ca and enter "M452-2850 C" (without the
quotes) in the product search.
With this approach, the idea is to them have a relatively modern pc that I
can use for Linux or XP in the future. This model seems to have both IDE
and SATA. The plan is to utilize the IDE for the exisiting hdd (with the
WinME OS) and then build upon the SATA for future storage or main hdd use.
Would that work, or are simultaneous us of IDE hdd and SATA hdd not allowed
on mobo's?
[2] A new pc that supports boot via USB and utilize the existing WinME OS
via an hdd enclosure.
The dilema of course is the ram limitation in WinME (max 512meg with tweaks
in Vcache) ..and maybe a few other limitations such as suitable video driver
support.
W.r.t the barebone kit above, would WinME have problems with PCI-Express? Tag: Ad-Aware defs Aug6 Tag: 290929

nvidia GeForce 2 440 MX not cooperating
My ME box must have heard me talking about replacing it with Linux.. the
standard Nvidia GeForce2 440 MX display is (once AGAIN!) only booting to a
blank screen now. The only way I could initially fix that was to boot to
SafeMode, then force the setting to 16 colours there, then do a full
shutdown (not restart! but a full OFF). Then at next bootup, I could at
least get a non-blank display, albiet in 16 colours. :((
I tried reinstalling the nvidia 440MX drivers from a saved set of files on
the hdd. The install reports "successful", but at next bootup - blank
screen! I had found a set numbered as version 81.98 for the 440MX card a
few years ago from the Nvidia site.
What to do? Trying to do anything on the net (even email) is absolutley
awful in 16 colours!
Could it be that the Nvidia reinstall doesn't overwrite some of the key
files that it should? How could I purge the system of all Nvidia 440 MX
driver files and try again?
I know this isn't a hardware fault because Linux (Ubuntu, PuppyLinux) boots
up into a very lovely display. Tag: Ad-Aware defs Aug6 Tag: 290881
The Color 'Red' is missing
If this is the wrong 'forum', please let me know and also where to turn.
Since I'm using WinME, I figured it would be worth a try:
In Properties/Settings under 'Colors' the color red is now completely
missing, while at first it sporadically changed back to 'normal' with all
colors present.
This makes the display appear greenish and the former blue purplish.
Otherwise no changes.
It seemed to coincide with the loss of my 'WinZip' (just a guess).
Does this indicate the monitor going bad'?
Or is the cause somewhere else?
If it can be fixed, please let me know.

since then i have re-installed it many times, but i still get the same

which is to naturally be expected after new install.
am i missing something, or is it now impossible to use adaware unless one

i refuse to put this one on due to the many problems i've heard about it,
and the fact that the adaware personell seem to be distancing themselves

Rundll32 Problem
Box Pentium 2 36Xmx Creative Intel Pentium 2
Start up disk scan runs then Rundll32 Damon box appears saying restart
computer. Rebooting does not fix it. Cannot bring up Dos Promote

(snapped)
Solution: You should find the place where this
unwanted program starts itself and disable this
start up item using more sophisticated algorithm.
1. Choose Start -> Run...
2. Type msconfig.exe and press Enter.
3. Switch to the last tab of the dialog
appeared and turn off (uncheck) EVERY item
listed in this startup section.
4. Click OK and restart your computer. The
problem should disappear. However, many of
your resident programs will not load. This is
OK by now.
5. Go to the last tab of msconfig.exe once
again and turn on one of the disabled items.
Reboot.
6. Repeat step 6 until you find the item
which triggers the problem (until the problem
comes back).
7. Uncheck this malicious item forever and go
on with steps 5-7 until all "good" items are
checked again.
This algorithm will take some time (and you should
restart your PC a lot of times) but it solves
almost 100% of all problems which can't be solved
using two other methods described.

Ad-aware Plus 2007
Okay, I don't like saying 'I was right' - after all it usually means
something negative. But I was - Lavasoft have gone back on the promise
of lifelong updates to those who bought Ad-aware Plus back in, in my
case, late-2000. They call it a different product - as I predicted
they would - which those like myself may - whoopee do! - upgrade to at
a 40% discount!
Funny, because it's going to cost them more than they save with this
cheap attempt to renege on the original deal they made with, among
doubtless many others, me.
It really is time everybody realized businesses in the security field
that renege on their deals are as bad as the people they supposedly
protect against. It is the same reason as why a 'bent copper' is worse
than an ordinary crook.

Questions on anti-virus programs
Hello everyone:
After 2 years on being on dial up, I Just switched to high speed MSN with
DSL.
The package came with McAfee AV & Firewall. After installing *McAfee AV* I
noticed a complete slowdown in my computer. Had to remove it. (Did not
install the firewall).
My questions are:
1) Am I right in just trusting Avast4 as an AV? I haven't had any problems
while on dial up & none in the few days with DSL.
2) Are there any other AV programs someone may recommend that are not "hogs"
in using computer resources? (I know Norton is "out"!!).
3) I'm also using CCleaner, Spywareblaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, &
Ad-Aware SE Personal. Shouldn't all of these be enough?
Running Windows ME , IE 6 SP1 on Broadband MSN DSL.
Thanks,

Sudden Abnormal mouse erratic behaviour
My computer, running WinXP Pro with 128 MB RAM, today has started acting very
strange. Although normally it has to be double-clicked to open a file or
folder, now it sometimes opens files/folders/e-mail with only one mouse
click, not two. However, it is very inconsistent, sometimes requiring two
clicks as normal, but sometimes requiring only one click.
Another symptom is that when a window is open, while browing the web, the
scroll bar on the right is very herky-jerky, but sometimes not - again being
inconsistent.
Both these problems occur pretty often - enough to be very annoying.
Another symptom is that it when I try to capture text by holding down the
mouse right-click button, it sometimes captures the text, but sometimes
refuses to, or will capture only a a small part of the text. This occurs on
web pages, but is even worse trying to capture text in this message I'm
typing right now.
Also, when I click and hold on the to blue line of a window, such as this
message I'm now typing, in order to move the non-maximized window, often
instead of moving the window it'll open it completely.
Also, when the cursor is placed at the edge of a non-maximized window to re-
size it, it often will not re-size it. If I try repeatedly, sooner or later
it will.
I use latest AVG AntiVirus and update it at least daily, and did an entire
system/computer scan, but am virus-free.
I ran spy bot search and destroy, anti adware, pest control tools, anti
spyware, anti rootkits, and also tried changing various mouse options but the
problem is still happening.
Can anyone please shed some light on what is happening, and a fix for it? Am
not very technical, so please be specific.
Thanks in advance, very much... Tag: Ad-Aware defs Aug6 Tag: 290667

Until 2 weeks ago I had not heard of phoenix bios. Now every time I start up
my computer it is there. I always exit it without saving changes, but I don't
know what I am doing.
What is it and why is it there every time?

MY GMAIL HAS BEEN CORRUPTED BY A CYRILLIC LANGUAGE
I run my PC on XP Pro SP2 and use the email address
bigron2006@gmail.com as an alternate email address to cut down on
spam, etc.in my real life email
Recently it has somehow become corrupted and displays everything in a
strange, Cyrillic type language (except the email messages, which are
in English)
I tried reinstalling Gmail to no avail, and I cannot find a language
selector. I have also checked my settings in Regional Languages
(Control Panel)
Your help would be much appreciated.

Ethernet On Windows ME
I have Windows ME on another computer in my home and I also have an ethernet
connection through cable. I have a cable running from the router into the
other computer. I try to run Internet Explorer and it says that there is not
connection. I don't have dial-up connection so that won't work. How do I make
it so the internet will work on that computer? I really need you help. Thanks. Tag: Ad-Aware defs Aug6 Tag: 290529
Snapped from the Ethernet any comments?

How to open downlaoded files? Options Options

How to open downlaoded files? Options
To open a downloaded file: 1. Follow any instructions the file provider has given to place the downloaded file or files in a specific folder on your computer. If your file or files are already in this specific folder, skip to step 2. If you did not receive instructions about placing the downloaded file or files in a specific folder, create a new folder on the desktop, and then copy the files into this folder:
a. Right-click the desktop, point to New, and then click Folder.
b. Type downloaded_files, and then press ENTER.
c. Copy the file or files to this new folder. To copy a file, right-click it, click Copy, right-click the destination folder, and then click Paste. After you copy the file or files to the downloaded_files folder, verify that all the files were successfully copied. After you verify that all the files were copied, you can delete the original copies of the files.
2. Open the folder that contains the file or files (or the downloaded_files folder), and then double-click the file you want to open. If you have a program installed on your computer that is capable of opening the file, when you double-click the file, the file should open in the appropriate program. For example, if you double-click a document (.doc) file and Microsoft Word for Windows (any version) is installed on your computer, the file should open in Word. If you do not have a program that is capable of opening the file, you receive an "Open With" dialog box that prompts you to select a program to open the file with. If you receive this prompt, it indicates you do not have a program that is capable of opening the file, and you should obtain and install a program for this purpose. For information about which program to install, the provider of the file should be able to confirm which program is needed to open their file.
