Avast is killing me
I tried to get a service ticket and I cannot get registered either.
I cannot get a clean uninstall completed . I keep getting error
message.. I used their uninstall software.
my attempted communication with them is:
Can someone tell me how to get this error message out of my computer?
I am dual booting. It comes up when I run the old cardfile program I
have forwarded for years....while in windows 2k.. I have not had a
problem if I run it from Windows ME. I run the application from the
ME directory only.

There is no such line in my config.nt file
I boot windows ME and 2000pro. The program that is triggering the
message is a 16bit that sits in the C:\Windows (ME) directory
rather than the the D:\WNNT directory altho I have looked all over
the place for the culprit.. and I removed ALWIL from the 2000Pro
registry and the ME directory using Avast uninstall software off
their Support site.

Modem & SR problems
Hi guys,
About three days ago I was able to connect at a bit rate between 49.3-50.6.
Later that same day a storm hit and afterwards I'm getting 19.2-21.6 bit
rates. Is it possible that the one using the machine at the time didn't
unplug the phone line quick and lightning has damaged this modem?
It seems that SR isn't making automatic check points. I can create check
points but there seems to be no check points created by SR on its own
according to the others who use this machine.
I ask these questions together because if it's not the modem and if I can't
find any check points then I don't think I'll be able to restore it back
before the bit rate went down.

windows ME 'died'
Ok, I had a spare Windows ME pc Emachines tower that I was handed down to
me. After having used it spareingly for 2 years, it died; we had a black out
and I think the machine fried because it was not on a surge protect outlet.
But the machine was off.
Anyways, before I part it out, or store it, or trash it, I want to remove
the hardrive to ensure security. This pc was not used but for occasional
surfing but i did make a few payments on it and saved the pages to "my
documents".... So my question is what do I remove to ensure that no
documents, pictures, or anything compromising stays on the computer? I
already know how to open the tower but dont really know what any parts look
like.
So, if you have tips, or can nicely direct me to read up on other sites to
accomplish this, I would appreciate it.
This was at least 7+ year old Windows ME edition and i never got the CD.
This unit worked fine til that day we had the power outage. Now it wont even
turn on. I thank you in advance.

Can i take it that the file ie6sp1.zip is a fully
updated one?
It contains 61 files whereas the MS has the
83 files of 77.9 MB size. The ie6setup.exe
version was 6.0.2800.1106.

it has a ton of information on all windows os and offers free updates even
for now "dead" Windows. Like this one here :

Disk Cleanup Automatically Deleted Something???
Hello,
My disk was almost full -- 200mb remaining or so, and disk cleanup popped up
after I got a "disk space low" warning. This has happened to me several
times and I usually just delete some stuff in my recycle bin. But the last
time I got the low disk space message, I clicked "NO" when disk cleanup
offered to clear up some space (I was downloading a radio show). Next thing
I know, I have 1.25G of freee space. So it looks like something was deleted
without my approval. My recycle bin still has over 1G of deleted stuff that
I'm on the fence about keeping, and it doesn't look like much is missing
from there (I could be wrong). But I was wondering ... is there some
standard procedure that windows me employs to free up space under these

My wife has Windows ME on her system and I am running XP. We need a printer
with ME drivers so are thinking of the Canon Pixma 160.
Anyway, if we get that and I attach it to my system as a shared printer and

Microsoft Word Viewer
I have a friend still with Windows Me who cannot open Microsoft Office
documents. I have searched the Microsoft website for a Word Viewer but the
oldest I can find appears to be Word Viewer 2003 which doesn't appear
compatible with Windows Me. Before installing Office, I used to have Word
Viewer 1997 but not surprisingly, it doesn't appear to be available on
Microsoft website. Anybody know where I can find a reliable copy or
alternatively whether Word Viewer 2003 would work with Windows Me.

I just ran across your conversation thread from July 31, 2007 that is
close to a problem I=92m having.
I upgraded to the Nvidia 5200 several months back and had good results
with it for a couple months. Then it began to fail in odd ways so I
upgraded it to the BFG Tech version of =93Nvidia GeForce 6200 OC.=94
This works well except if / when my system starts to go to sleep and
puts up the screen saver, it will lock up. The only way to get it back
is to cycle power.
Can someone give me the skinny on how to surmount? I don't even
remember how to change the timer for putting up the screen saver.
Also I noticed Ogg was looking for =93a *new* barebone system just old
enough to still
support WinME.=94 I may have some good news. This Spring I built a
little PC for daur., using a new Intel DG33BU mob, Dual Core CPU, on
board video, on board HD audio, etc. In setting its CMOS, I came
across an interesting feature that allowed it to be used with old OS=92s
via mimicking an old BIOS or some such. I installed XP pro SP2 with
out making use of this feature so maybe it is intended for win2K, NT4,

Maybe I'm missing something. After cleaning up my different programs for
viruses and malwares, I'm wondering if I'm out of touch. I have
SpywareGuard V.2.2.0.1 which dates from 2002 and when trying to update, I'm
told that its up to date??

My pc is brain dead, trying to do most any thing gives me a Microsoft

Saw this today on the antivirus group......but I doubt that I will go
back to it. Confusing as Avast can be at times, I think I prefer their

Hello:
Here's an item from the Win 98 general newsgroup that may be of interest to
some.
Acronis True Image v8 supports Win 98 thru XP, including ME. However, while
it supports ATA drives, it may not support SATA drives. I'm not sure.
It seems to be a multi-step process, to fill out the request in the link
below, then to fill out a free registration form, and then to login and
download the free version of Acronis v8 from the list of registered
software, but it does work.

RE: Problem with computer freezing while using IE 6
In case you're interested:
I had posted back in late March that I was having problems with a 7-
year-old IBM Netvista constantly freezing while using Internet
Explorer 6.
I sent the motherboard off to http://www.badcaps.net to have the
capacitors replaced at a cost of $65 for 'standard' capacitors.
This has been one of the best decisions that I've ever made. The
computer very rarely freezes now. Usually it's because there's a
problem with a particular website or I've got too many things open.
I just wanted to say that http://www.badcaps.net did really good work
for what's turned out to be a very reasonable price. There's no way
that I would have been able to purchase a new computer now.

Has anyone using Ad-aware SE noticed when the programs loads the last two
latest de files have been corrupt? I've not change the way I've gotten the

What to do!! Around June 30, Outlook Express can no longer be used to
access Hotmail accounts. Microsoft says to install Windows Live Mail, which
is not compatible with WinME. Nice.

music burner problem
i currently use musicmatch to burn my cd's. never had a problem before until
i ininstalled jave, which i did reinstall it, and i uninstalled outlook
express which i know is for mail. i currently installed mozilla firefox
because my explorer freezes up on me all the time. now for some reason when
i go to burn a cd, it goes thru all the motion and when i play the disc there

Power Point Viewer 2003
I have a question regarding PPV 2003. I've received a couple of
presentations
that *do have music,* - however I can't hear it. When forwarded to folks,
they are
able to hear the music. Yet, 99% of the other PP presentations that do have

in my system - I can hear them perfectly!
I have tried to Google downloads for update versions, and the only free
download
I could find was PP Viewer 2007 - which requires Windows 2000 SP4.
Since I'm running Win ME, I am unable to find an upgrade. Does any of you
have any ideas as of what could be wrong? Or do I have to accept the fact
that I
indeed need to 'dump' Win ME and upgrade to a more current system?
Lastly, I don't know whether this is relevant, but early this year I
installed
Open Office.org 2.4, which has the suite of programs, including
presentations.
I can't hear the music through this program either.
Any help or guidance will be appreciated.

I just upgraded to Vista about 2 weeks ago and I am having several problems
with it. (1) With UAC on I can't open Itunes. If I turn off UAC then I can
open Itunes with no problem and use my ipod with it. (2) When viewing
videos on youtube or msn I can't hear the audio with UAC on but when I turn
it off I can hear the audio just fine.
I am sure there are other problems that I have not found yet. So my
question is; should I reinstall Vista on my computer and do a hard install?
When I upgraded to vista I ran the HP Upgrade Assistant and then installed
Windows Vista Home Premium Express Upgrade. I am not sure I can do a hard
install with this upgrade but I would try if I could. What do you think?
Is it possible to fix the problems I have without doing a reinstall or
should I reinstall Vista?

Windows Protection Error - HELP!
For some reason unknown to me, when my computer started up today, I got a
blue screen with the message: Windows Protection Error. Please restart your
system.
When I restarted, the same message came up. The keyboard and mouse are
disabled, and i had to turn off the pc by unplugging the power.
I checked microsoft on another pc for this problem, and it listed a large
number of possibilites as the cause.
I did manage to do a thorough scan disk. Some errors were found and
automatically fixed. I then defragmented the drive.
When rebooting, the same message came up.

C:\_Restore\TEMP
A previous post made me curious about C:\_Restore\TEMP (Windows ME, of
course), which I looked at and found thousands (I think about 3000) of
files, some create/modified as early as 2001. I reduced the disk space
for system restore and then disabled it, interspersed with a reboot or
two. Then C:\_Restore\TEMP showed no files; it was empty.
I then enabled system restore and did a reboot. A system checkpoint was
created and I created another restore point. Now C:\_Restore\TEMP has
93 files, many with creation dates as early as 2003 and many with
modified dates earlier (Feb 2008, March 2008, April 2008) than May 2008
(today's system date is May 2, 2008).
What's going on with these dates? I would have expected that all 93
files should show today's date, May 2, as both the created and modified
date.

cdrom not reading files "sees" all files as music
I do volunteer work repairing computers for the disablied. I had an old copy
of ME. For several years I used it so I decided to upgrade a computer using
win98 to ME. All went find except for 2 problems. The major one is it will no
longer read the files system on cd-rw. It sees all files as music. This was
not a problem for this machine in win98. How do I work around this problem?
Another smaller problem is that the machine no longer shuts down completely
by itself. A message comes on screen saying it is safe to turn off the
computer. I am guessing this has to do with adci (not sure if those are the
right letters I think it is aa power management issue). How do I get it to
shut down?

Can't get past splash screen
A friend's laptop recently went faulty so he decided, as it's 7 years old,
to treat himself to a new one. However, he needs a couple of things off the
old one if at all possible, so he brought it to me.
It boots, completes the POST OK and then shows the Windows ME splash
screen - but gets no further, no matter how long you leave it. Pressing the
"Esc" key to get rid of the splash screen and see what's going on reveals
the following text:
"Please wait while setup updates your config files. This may take a few
minutes".
After about two minutes, it shows:
"Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2
%1: %2"
and that message repeats at two minute intervals for as long as you leave
it. Any ideas what's wrong and how to get past it?

Please help. What should I do? It says:
Error Starting Program The WLANAPI.DLL file is linked to missing
export KERNEL32.DLL:GetSystemWindowsDirectoryW.
The date on the dll file is 11/10/07, and the Kernel32 is date
6/8/2000.
When I click on OK, there is a box underneath that says
C:\Programs\D-Link\AirGCFG.exe A device attached to the system is not
functioning.
I have WinME on an IBM Thinkpad laptop with 256M Ram, and everything
has been running fine for a long time.
Except I don't use the laptop very often, and I can't remember if my
almost new D-Link wireless card worked last month or not. I have a
wireless-b card that I might have used then. But now the D-link
bg-card wasn't working so I went to reinstall the software that goes
with it. It required me to uninstall the software first, so I did and
I reinstalled, and then it won't start the software and when I click
on the icon, it gives the message WLANAPI.dll was missing, so I found
and downloaded a copy of that. Then it wanted WZCSAPI.dll, so I dl'd
a copy of that, which was dated 5/13/04. Now I get the messages at
the top. I've googled but not found what I need.

For some reason, the top of my window keeps flashing, and I hear a type of
"clicking" noise..
so I am wondering if I have any type of malware since Ive already ran my

only problem was with Windows Media Player and Movie Maker, caused by not
enough memory or something like that, but that was OK, since the machine was
older even then. I don't hate Windows Me, I even like it, no matter that it
is the most hated Windows OS ever. I actually have seen more problems in XP
Home than in Me. XP Pro> XP Home. XP Home is worse thgan Me in my opinion,

Windows Me, because it had only a limited shelf life. Maybe if it stayed for
a bit longer, and had a SP it would become quite good.
I know a lot of people say that Me sucked because of drivers. Well, it may
be true, but actually, I have
never had any problems with it. It even ran well on a 1996 PC, with a Cyrix
processor better than Windows 98. And the PC was designed for Windows 95!!!
I'm considering installing Windows Me on a PackardBell EasyNoteR (I have
original 2000, Me and XP (OEM), and I plan buying Windows 7 when it is
released), will it work on it?

spybot disables spyware blaster
Latest spybot update disables spyware blaster from enabling protection.
Temp fix is to undo protection for fire fox in spybot. Until spybot
corrects the problem, this apparently is the only fix, according to Java
Cool.

Saving harddrive data - Windows Explorer won't operate
I have an old PC with original Windows ME - no patches or upgrades. I want
to save all of my data onto an external hard drive, but my computer won't
even allow me to use Windows Explorer. What should I do?
Also, I have my Comcast internet connected to this computer along with a
wireless router, and all my other computers in the house are able to connect
to the internet via the wireless router. However, when I try to access the
internet off this Windows ME computer, it does not allow me access and
freezes up! It was not always this way.
I just want to save my data and then do a clean install on this computer

WinME memory limit
Hi everyone
I will be "destroying" 2 PCs to build a "new" one the final result will be:
Abit BP6 with 2 Celeron 500Mhz processors, 640 MB Ram, ATA66 integrated +
ATA133 Promise PCI card.
ATI All-in-Wonder 128 (Rage chipset) 32 MB AGP video card.
3 HD, 1 x 4.3 gb (C: WinME + progs), 1 x 80 gb (Data), 1 x 20 gb (E: Win
XPpro + progs)
I already have all the drivers that I'll need for both OS.
It will be dual boot and my question concerns the WinME part. I understand
that it will use only one processor but I've heard that Win 98 and ME have
problems with memory above 512 MB and there need to be some command(s)
added somewhere (.ini files?). It will be the first time I run ME above 384
MB RAM.
Anyone could guide me in the right direction?
