    - Rundll32 hangs pc on shutdown Rundll32 runs randomly on my computer - sometimes it opens, sometimes not. IF it is open, and I try to shut down or restart, it just hangs. Once in a while I can shut down Rundll32 with ctrl-E and the shut down proceeds properly. Usually I have to power down and run scandisk on reboot. Is there anything I can do about this?     - How to play music CD? I am working on a friend's machine housing WME. I don't personally use WME, and so, I don't recognize some things.     - My Desktop Icons Do Not Display I am working on a friend's machine housing WME. I don't personally use WME, and so, am not sure where the desktop folder should exist, among other things. At boot, all I get on the screen is the taskbar, and the start button. The latter does work. The remainder of the screen is the 'background' (<none>). Anyway I have looked in WindowsExplorer, and a c:\windows\desktop folder exists, and it contains all the missing desktop icons, each of which will execute the apps as they are supposed to if I double-click on them. So, what I need to do is to get the content of that folder to show on the desktop screen. How do I do that? I have read the prior posts dealing with 'show desktop'.     - SCANDISK Problem I'm using SCANDISK surface scan from the ME restart diskette to try to clean a friend's hard disk. It has bad clusters, starting about 80% of the way through the 10 meg drive. Each SCANDISK iteration cleans about 5K clusters then stops for lack of memory (64megs) to store the log. I don't need a log!! So far I've run it 10 times and each time it cleans another 5K, but each iteration takes about 40 minutes. I calculate another 105 iterations assuming it's bad to the end of the drive.     - Extra fonts Hi. I finally installed Office (don't laugh, Ofc 97) and Word (Word 2002). When I installed word, there was an option to install some extra fonts. I 'bookmarked' it in the help file and planned to install later. When I tried it find it again, my 'bookmark' disappeared from help, and I couldn't find the right files. I found a file marked 'fonts' on the cd, but it only had 2 fonts, and I know there were a bunch. So I tried to uninstall and reinstall Word. Didn't get the bonus fonts choice again. So I tried to restore and it said it couldn't restore. That bites. Once you install Office you're doomed? Ok, I don't want to be mean. :-) Anybody know how I can get all those fonts?     - Boot Loop This computer runs Windows Me. It was working just fine before being shut down and moved because of a new carpet being put down. When it was hooked back up and powered up it would progress to the Windows Me logo window and then stop and start the boot all over. Next up was the Safe Mode option. When we select Safe Mode it progress into Safe Mode and operates in the mode as it should. If we select normal start up it loops again. No error messages have come up.     - VML Exploit in HTML not addressed in WinME, here's a fix Since support for WinME has been discontinued, I wanted to find a way to manually patch WinME and I think I have come up with a method. I tested the WinME PC with the following TEST URL -- http://www.isotf.org/zert/testvml.htm Running the test crashed IE on WinME as expected. My WinME PC is using IE6 SP1 and I have VGX.DLL, v6.0.2800.1411 I updated my Win2K PC which now has VGX.DLL, v6.0.2800.1580 Merely copying my Win2K VGX.DLL to my WinME PC would not work as the WinME system file protection refused the new version and always reverted to the vulnerable version. What I did was to execute... regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX\VGX.DLL" Which un-registers the vulnerable version of VGX.DLL from the system. On the Win2K PC I copied... "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX\VGX.DLL" to "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX\VGX2.DLL" So now I had the updated DLL as; VGX2.DLL I then copied it to the WinME PC VGX folder. "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX" On the WinME PC I then executed... regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VGX\VGX2.DLL" Which registered the new DLL ( v6.0.2800.1580 ) to the system. I then tested with the TEST URL -- http://www.isotf.org/zert/testvml.htm It seems to have fixed the problem.     - junk cleaners in ME Hi On my 2002 win xp home editions sp2, I use a program called 'clean up'; it supposedly frees up space on pc's that get filled with more than the usual temp files-does a more thourough job than disk clean up. Have no problem on my 2 dells that use it. But, i havent used it on my 6 or so year old e-machine ME edition. anyone recommend to use it on this one. or have a better one for this brand/OS ?     - Re: After installing another 80GB hard drive and a fresh WinME, my removable drives are "readable" again, all three of them, CD-ROM, FloppyA and the Iomega Zip. The drive with the "fault" is disconnected and standing by. When time permits it, I will investigate further in order to pinpoint the "culprit".     - Installing IE6 has wrecked explorer I wanted to help my neighbors getting the newest messenger on their 6 year old Win ME PC. First I installed Messenger, then it asked for a new IE, which I accepted. This has wrecked explorer. Immediately after login I get the following message: "Explorer has caused an error in Browseui.dll". THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD!! ;-) I have tried the steps suggested in Q289799 without success, running scanreg /fix from a ME boot disk (downloaded from allbootdisks.com - the original ME CD-ROM was gone). This changed nothing. 1) Is there any way, besides installing ME all over again, I can recover from this? 2) Is it not possible to install new versions of IE and Messenger on ME?     - Windows ME compared to Windows 98SE I use and like 98SE and was wondering what Windows ME gives a user that 98SE does not have. The system restore feature in ME is nice but can be overcome through a third party solution like GoBack. Windows 98(SE) has its own resource kit and I think that Windows ME does not have one. Windows ME may have better generic drivers but that limitation has been overcome by using a Windows ME driver in 98SE as in the case of the Ati Radeon 9800 XT which uses the Windows ME driver in 98SE. I like the fact of easy shut down to MS-DOS that is given in 98SE but not ME. Was Microsoft's intention to do away with the 9x source code and focus on the NT (New Technology) source code and that was why Windows ME was rushed out the door?     - Add/Remove Windows Setup Missing Components Hi, I have only one program showing up in the Windows Setup in Add/Remove programs, in Windows ME. It is the winpopup program. I have no other window components showing up, I have tried doing the VarLDID registry fix and other registry scans. I went into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Optional= =ADComponents and found it empty except for the winpopup folder, swflash and vpn. =20 This is on an HP laptop.     - can not get Windows ME to re-load properly after a recovery and fo When I recently tried to use the recovery cd's to re-install Windows ME on a HP Pavillion machine. Ir rand disc 1 and 2 okay, told me to remove the second disc and click Ok to begin using Winddows ME, but when I click Ok this come come up: VMM32.VXD, if this file is not your Pathm you may need to re-install Windows and I try again ti use the recovery disc and end up with the same error and Windows ME never gets started or able to us. Rolled back a few days with System Restore. On trying to access my on-line banking site, get the "notify windows of this error" pane, no other details given.     - icons dont load, scan disk find errors and fixes Twice now, when I've booted up, the icons dont load to the desktop. I shutdown, and when I reboot scandisk tries to run, but cannot complete (waited 15 mins). I then rebooted to safe mode and ran scandisk. It found errors and fixed them, both times. I've also run a scanreg /fix after the first time it happened. Any suggestions ? Also, what does it mean when scandisk finds an error on the drive? I've recently installed Norton A/V 2005.     - Minimized windows disappears I have been searching the net for a solution to a little problem with Win ME, with no luck. The problem is when I minimize windows, they does not appear on the taskbar. I can use Alt+TAB and switch between them, but they where supposed to show on the taskbar.     - Telephony Problems/Sound Recorder HI all, Im new to the groups so Im sorry if I post this the wrong way. My question is this.. Ive noticed that when I go into the control panel , I see an icon that says "Telephony". Previously when I clicked it, I got a box where I could put in ppl's names and numbers to dial so that I could make calls thru the pc. Now when I click on it..it says "Sound Recorder" ..I guess to "record" sounds.. but I cant dial numbers thru it anymore nor is it even the same box..     - Add/Remove hardware menu On my add/remove hardware menu are the names of several applications that I have already uninstalled. For some reason the names are still there.     - Help w/webcam mic etc I am on HP w/Win Me. I hooked up a webcam (amcap version 8:00) with a *built in* mic, I installed software. I can see my image when I open the program but no sound. I can not figure out how to adjust the mic part. I want to use ii with MSN messenger. I opened messenger to do I mic test. it says mic not detected,. make sure mic is turned on., the webcam does not have a mic switch. I do have it plugged into the back of my tower where the "mic" icon is. I am confused about this. On the plug (I don't know the tech word for it) from, my monitor,. it has pink plug with a mic icon on it. When I set up my computer I plug that into the mic slot on my tower, What is that for? I have a computer running WindowsME. I started it up the other day and I had
a different desktop then the norm. When I try to click on the Start button it
freezes. If I go to My Computer directly after a restart, I get the error
message, "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on
this page. As a result the page may not display correctly." In safe mode,
when I go to IE settings, The Zones are empty. It will not open in normal
mode at all.

Any thoughts??? I've run antivirus and adaware scans with nothing showing up.
