Ugrading from Windows ME to XP
I gave my stepmother an old computer. The computer originally had Windows 98
on it and upgraded it to XP Home addition. She recently passed away and we
are disposing of the computer. This computer is actually older than my
father's computer which has ME on it.
Can I take my operating disks from the the computer that will be disposed of
and install them on my Dad's computer which has Windows ME on it? The system
was licensed to the old computer.
If we can't do that, we probably will switch out the drives, but it will
still be easier to upgrade my Dads than doing all the switching.
When I upgraded the computer I gave to my mom, I put in a new hard drive.
Because I had also replaced the monitor and the printer, we had a miserable
time getting XP to be valid. We spent hours with Microsoft on the phone (It
was free then). Will have this same problem if I try to upgrade my Dad's
computer???
Remember . . .The other computer is too old to give away so we are getting
rid of. Tag: SE 1R196 15.10.2007 Tag: 292086
Hasn't anyone installed a hard drive into multiple computers?
I have done this without thinking of something until now and here's the
story: I am someone that collects used computers and one thing that I've done
is took a Windows Millennium edition containing hard drive out of a Dell and
installed it into two other Dell computers and I am thinking of installing it
in a Gateway computer.
The problem here is that I'm asking myself: how do you remove the recent
computer's features, settings and the device drivers information out of the
registry?
Please shed some light on this darkness anyone who has a any info on how I
can fix this problem; I'll appreciate it very much. Tag: SE 1R196 15.10.2007 Tag: 292075

need installation disk
We've got an hp pavilion 8775c computer that was in the trash. It was
full of viruses, so I erased the harddrive (windows me). I installed
win98 on it. I then purchased the recovery cds. The computer doesn't
have the original sound card (I added a new one) and I added extra memory.
The recovery cds (which install windows me) is not recognizing the
computer although these cds are for this model. (The mainboard is the
original one.)
The computer has a sticker for windows me on it with the software key.
I'm looking for a copy of an installation disk for windows me (upgrade
or new) that I can use to reinstall windows me - or any suggestions on
how to get these recovery cds to function. (They're original recovery
cds from hp).

Explorer has cause an error in Shell32.dll.
Explorer will now close. If you continue to
experience problems, try restating your
computer.
This error popped up first time while adding an
MP3 file to Winamp 5.1. I clicked close. The mp3 file
however got added and played normally. I noticed that
Modem and Soundcard icons have dissppeared from the
Quick Launch bar leaving Volume icon only. But both
of them remained active.
Restarting the computer made no change. I soon found
out other players ( Total Recorder, Cooledit) are
acting similarly.

Reinstalled the windows and the players and still the
same position.

Scanning problems, old system, Dell 4100, ME, IE6 SP1. 3rd party issue with

Problem just started with no changes to the system. Scans do not work in

meaning scanning a B/W article in the color or grayscale mode scans OK, but
not in the B/W mode. Been using the system for 7 yrs without problems.

Help: I Can Only Load Pages For Several Minutes
My old Compaq pc with WindowsME only allows me to surf the internet
for several minutes. It will then completely stop loading pages and in
order to temporarily fix the problem I have to reboot.
At first I thought it was Verizon(which had gone down a couple of days
ago), but has hoping someone can give me advice on what to check and
do next if it is my system itself.
Sometimes I can't even save an image because the system "thinks" there
is not enough room on my drive even though it is a 4g that has 6-700mb
free.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Floppy disk, do I need it?
I'm strongly considering a new desktop computer and notice that many (most?)
of them no longer include a slot for floppy disks. I feel like I'd be
losing something that might be necessary, even though I very rarely use that
feature any longer.
I believe there are accessory floppy disk readers/writers available, but are
they worth the trouble and expense?
What will I lose if I have no floppy disk ability at all?

Tab Issues
Hi all,
I am not sure which catagory this question belongs in, so pardon me if Im
sending it to the wrong
group...
My problem is this: My TAB button on my keyboard will not move my cursor.
For example, when signing into my Yahoo email, I'll input my username, and
then press the tab button to move the cursor down so I can put in my
password, but it will not move.
Yet if I am on a regular webpage, the tab button will function just fine.
I thought it was a keyboard problem, even though every other function worked
just fine..I went and
purchased a new keyboard anyway.
But I am still having the same problem, so it cannot be the keyboard. I
didnt always have this problem, it just
started maybe 2 months ago or so...but its darn annoying.
Anyone have any idea of why it's doing this? Any settings that I can alter
or is there something I may have altered that I shouldnt have?
Thanks in advance!

Have memory leaks? Hibernate...
I'd mentioned a few days back that Hibernate seems to do an excellent
job of cleaning up memory leaks altho my hibernations (only) averaged
about 10 seconds. Like catnaps, these short hibernation sessions
seemed to really revitalize the system performance. I'm sorry if I'm
beating on a dead horse but I have seen no mention of a refreshing and
memory cleansing associated with hibernate. A reboot has always been
needed to get such a refreshing effect.
I have to report a couple errata...
First the (System Monitor) reported available memory after Hibernating
is 366 MB, not 300 MB (on a 512 MB RAM system).
Second, and probably more significant, the nature of my hibernate
sessions has changed and I can't explain why. Today true hibernation
occurs.
The other day I said the extent of a hibernation session was about 10
seconds. After 10 seconds my computer resumed operation with the
memory cleansed from (plus an increment from 244 MB max to 300 MB
max).
At first Start ->Shutdown->Hibernate was followed in a second or two
by a black screen and the green Power On Led at the front of the
monitor going off. Eight seconds after that the monitor would regain
power and shows the usual desk top.
That has changed and the monitor is NOT automatically
returning to active status. Instead the computer appears to shutdown.
The fans on the PSU and CPU turn off. The leds that I usually look at
show the system is off go off. It stays that way even if I mouse or
press keys on the keyboard including Ctrl-Alt-Del. When I press the
Power-on button at the front of the chassis, hold it for a second or
two, then it appears to do a normal restart except, after the usual
boot-up messages appear on the screen, something like a white status
bar appears at the bottom of the screen with a message about
Hibernation is over. A few seconds everything appears to be better as
I reported previously.
Bottom line is my original report that System Monitor indicates
Hibernate cleans up memory leaks plus adds another increment of memory
for the Users space still seems valid. But, instead of taking just
ten seconds and with no other user action, now it appears that one
will go thru a true hibernation cycle and these take me at least a
minute.
Hope this helps,

Spybot S&D
Hello,
I just upgraded from version 1.4 to 1.5
Problem(s):
1) It takes about 2 minutes to get the Spybot screen loaded before it shows
on the computer screen.
2) I honestly don't know what settings I should have on/off.
3) Thinking of uninstalling version 1.5 & going back to version 1.4.
Any ideas as of why the new version is such a hog on computer resources? Way
too slow to load.
Also, what's the best way to go back to the older version - without
affecting any files that might be left over throughout the system/registry.
Thanks,

upgrading ME to XP
HI, someone has an ad in the newspaper that is selling an older pc that she
says she loaded it with XP and it runs good.
However, in the event of a reinstall needed, the recovery disks will be
reloaded with ME (which she will provide with the newly upgraded older pc)
Just what kind of differences (physically and mechanically, etc) will there
be if an older pc is upgraded from an ME, to an XP home edition. I have a 2
yr old laptop with XP home. WIll the windows, icons, prompts, etc look the
same on both pcs with XP even though older pc had ME once?
hope my question makes sense as I havent seen the older pc w/Xp Tag: SE 1R196 15.10.2007 Tag: 291889
GOOD NEWS! Memory Leak Work Around -> Hibernate
A couple days ago, while running the System Monitor, I tried Start ->
Shutdown -> Hibernate again. Good news! It appears to have a very
positive affect in cleaning up memory leaks.
We've been using winME at our home ever since it came out in 2000 or
whenever. I have been constantly amazed at the bad press it receives
because it has worked so well for us. At first I really liked its
Movie Maker (had some help from MS before it was dependable with our
old Sony VX1000). Also the Sony Blue Ray worked altho Sony told us it
wouldn't.
Since Internet Explorer 6.0, it definitely got worse. I put IE6.0 on
twice. The first time up the system was such a pain that I figured out
how to get it off and went back to IE5.5 after a week. I think it was
a couple years and possibly more before we were somewhat coerced into
trying IE6 again. Probably because the Intuit tax software demanded
it. The system tolerated IE6 much better this time but still not as
well as IE5 or 5.5.
Anyway, this summer, July I think, I became curious about the non-
default abilities of the System Monitor, turned it on and went thru
them again. This time it seemed to be a good predictor of when
system performance was beginning to slide. So we now have it on
autostart and keep it up 24/7 (drag most of it off the right side of
the screen).
I've been watching two graphs: the Memory Manager: Unused physical
memory and the Kernel Processor Usage. That has been an eyeopening
experience. Almost immediately, I could see what appear to be major
memory leaks - something worth complaining about. But a little
Googling quickly found this has been widely reported for a long time.
So I didn't waste anybody's time.
The Kernel Processor Usage also looks bizarre. But that might only be
due to my not understanding what this graph is supposed to show. I
have long used performance meters, most recently I've used the basic
NT4 performance meters. With that experience, this ME graph seems to
reflect the system cpu utilization. It has the word "kernel" in the
title so perhaps there is a "non-kernel" component to cpu
utilization. Even so, what it appears to show is not good. After an
hour or so, the cpu resources are about 75% consumed even when
"resting" - the user doing nothing. The main work would have to be
Virus checking and network monitoring (monitoring a Cox Cable Modem
and maybe Bluetooth?).
As for Hibernate - I think it worked for us initially. But it (or
Standby?) normally comes on automatically - the screen saver comes on
first cycling thru My Pictures for about 10 minutes then the computer
goes to sleep (Black screen) so I seldom go thru the Start Button to
turn on Hibernate (Start->Shutdown->Hibernate). Nowdays, it doesn't
really work. The system hibernates for about 10 seconds then wakes up!
But System Monitor does show whatever the current memory leaks are, it
fixes them in 10 seconds.
Check it out. Tag: SE 1R196 15.10.2007 Tag: 291885
Update ME to XP
My parents purchased a digital camera which did not support ME. I installed
XP. Now it appears that my mothers files are there, but not the programs. It
tries to open them in wordpad. Therefore it gives odd symbals. rather than
what she had in her document. It also eliminated her address book in outlook
express. I do not see her virus protection either. Please help to get this
back. I have not installed anything since this happened.

Crash in Console while using queuing a work item
Hi All,
I have a usb driver running in Windows ME but when i type something in
console prompt then either system crashes or console crashes. Exact
steps are given below.
1) Plug in a usb modem.
2) Go to start->Run->Type command->Enter
3) Command prompt opens. Type something in command prompt. 4) Either
system crashes or console crashes.
I have come to know that crash occurs near the function where i queues
a work item in a system worker thread. I am using the standard
functions "IoAllocateWorkItem()","IoQueueWorkItem()" and
"IoFreeWorkItem()" functions to queue the work item. The function
which queues the work item is running at DISPATCH LEVEL and obviously
the callback function is running at PASSIVE LEVEL.
How can i queue the work item without the console crash?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Boot Up Problem with Win ME (AV Related?)
I have a friend who has an older computer, running Win ME. He has
left town to go to Chicago, but in the mean time a 21-year-old intern
has come to live at his place and needs to use his computer.
His computer had an old version of Norton AV on it, which was not
updated since 2004. So I advised the intern, Ellen, to remove Norton
and install AVG instead. She does this.
Unfortunately, she is not a computer-savvy person, and previously had
only used Macs and XP machines. So, sometime after installing AVG and
perhaps after installing Firefox, she starts getting these error
messages, which she basically ignores. One of these messages said
something about installing a disk in drive A:, i.e., the emergency
boot disk.
She did not have one and did not know what they meant, so just ignored
the message.
By the time I got there with my own boot disk, the machine just would
not boot up. You'd get this start up screen with the various choices,
and it would be defaulting to Safe Mode. But you'd try to boot into
Safe Mode, and it would just run through the initial splash screen
cycle, and put you back to the same menu, trying to boot into Safe
Mode.
We tried the boot disk, did scandisk and scanreg, but neither worked.
The "Help" file on the boot disk says something about an antivirus
program causing failure to boot, but does not say how to fix this.
Oh, we did run the utility that checks out file fragments or memory
fragments or whatever and converts them into a FILE0001.CHK type file.
That file had several references to AVG7, so it seems likely that the
antivirus had something to do with the problem.
Can anyone clue me in to the cause of the problem? And how to go
about fixing it? Or do I just need to take the computer in to a
repair shop?
