After installing another 80GB hard drive and a fresh WinME, my removable
drives are "readable" again, all three of them, CD-ROM, FloppyA and the
Iomega Zip.
The drive with the "fault" is disconnected and standing by.
When time permits it, I will investigate further in order to pinpoint the
"culprit".
Meanwhile "all systems are go" and back to "normal", hoping it would stay
that way.
