OK, I goofed unless I upgrade to XP. Bought new RAM and running dual
channel. Had to set the maxphyspage to get it to boot with both sticks.
Currently set at 48000 which seems OK. But unable to boot into safe mode.
What do I need to do?

Did you also set vCache limits??
MaxFileCache=512000

should help

The number I had found was 524288. I had set that first.
I'm thinking safe mode doesn't look at system.ini??

it does (or appears to at least, since Safe Mode should still work with a
functional High RAM count) - but only at certain sections of it, AFAIK -
however, your numbers for MFC are as good as mine under most
circumstances..... it *may* be worth trying with a lower number such as
374000 - these have been reported to work where higher numbers wouldn't

Re: 2G RAM by Norman

I've lowered the amount of RAM on the advanced tab of msconfig to 500M which
is the same as changing the setting for maxphyspage=1F3FF. I lowered the
Vcache, maxfilecache to 256M. Still the same.
This is exactly what happens. When I first put in the 2 1G sticks, dual
channel, the system would boot as far as when windows should start loading.
And then back to the beginning. Safe mode prompt, I'd choose 1, normal, and
again it would go to beginning. Once I had put the settings in system.ini.
it booted fine.
I was going to defrag in safe mode and rebooted holding control to get
prompt. Chose 3, enter and back to the beginning this time stopping at the
safe mode prompt because windows didn't load. If I let it time out I'd be in
an endless loop.
What am I missing?

Did the system work OK with lower RAM levels?
Has the system EVER run effectively in Win ME complete with Safe Mode?
Have you got any other settings in the 386Enh and vcache sections of System
.ini??

You may be able to 'simulate' safe Mode by running ME in Minimal/Diagnostic
Boot mode - using MSCONFIG to disable all startup options/settings - leaving
system.ini to run (and having two copies, which you can swap easily?)

Boot to DOS and run Scandisk from there - see if that helps

As recent as a couple of days before adding new cpu and ram I would end up
in safe mode sometimes.
Problems I was having were related to power, sleep functions and
intermittent locks and locks overnight.
Hardware changes seem to have eliminated the locking up situation.
I haven't investigated the power features fully yet.
Booted with startup and ran scandisk. no help.

How would I do the dual file configuration and swapping? Would that be the
same as choosing from the prompts on a boot screen?
Here are those sections of the system.ini. Not sure how the REM's got added
but one was obviously done while I was changing the RAM availability.

Hmmm
ConservativeSwapfileUsage is a setting that I would generally deprecate -
it's intended for specific situations (usually in gaming) where taking time
out to write date to the swapfile would be likely to cause problems. In
general use, it's NEVER a good idea to have that setting active.

The DMABufferSize setting is present in Win9x only for backward
compatibility with Win3.x - I'd lose it :)

Other than that, there's none of the fluff I was expecting to see. I assume
that the E: drive actually exists and is visible??

I do some gaming but its gone.
DMA buffer size comes in from a setting in device manager. My printer uses
ECP port with DMA. Will the setting have no effect?
E: is a small partition on second drive. Fully accessible.

IIRC - but I can find no authoritative links - the default DMABufferSize
setting is 64K anyhow (it may even be dynamic) in Win9x
What printer is this?? - a dot-matrix? :)

Norman

Canon Multipass 5500. Pretty sure the setting was written there after I went
into device manager, direct memory access controller. Check mark in reserve
DMA buffer. Rolled the number up to max, 64K.

Well that diagnostic mode wasn't such a great idea. I guess that is what I
get for playing with something that I don't know how it works. Ended up in a
cycle of endless reboots no matter what choices I made. Grasping at ether I
even loaded Bios fail safe.
Had to pull one of the sticks to get back up running.
That was one of the items I was trying to avoid. Have been considering dual
boot with XP but don't like the idea of having to pull a stick everytime I
want ME safe mode.
Is there no way around it other than your suggestion of a second trimmed
system.ini and then swapping them. I suspect doing it from DOS with renaming
would be the best bet if I get where I can't boot. But then what do I do
about all the other stuff that tries to load. If I can't boot I obviously
can't get at msconfig and remove check marks?
How close is this to safe mode?
