I note that KB891711 has caused problems for some people.
Fortunately, my machine seems unaffected. However, I notice that it runs
in start up. Is it supposed to? If not, can I/should I, disable it in
msconfig? Or is there a better way of doing it?
TIA

This particular patch, rather than updating a file, instead runs as a
service which is why it is running at all times. So no, since it is not
giving you problems, do not disable it using MSConfig since doing so would
be the same as not having installed the hotfix.
