All of a sudden I am unable to connect to the internet.
My modem is working all right, but when dialing I get this message: "The
computer you dialed did not answer".
It seems to me that this happened after I fixed some problems with Spybot
S&D. I already used the restore feature and reinstalled Windows ME, all to
no avail.
On the other hand, I did experiment with my sound card options and at one
time or another (don't remember exactly when, possibly when I tried to
install 'Audio HQ'
or even when I uninstalled and reinstalled the whole thing)
I encountered three o four dialog boxes asking me whether I would like to
keep or delete certain files.
It told me that some programs may not work properly if I did delete, but
they were not critical and it would do no harm to delete them and, click
'yes' to delete.
So I did, even though I didn't really want to ( and never will again, for
that matter) and my problem was 'de facto'.
Is there any way to fix this situation without formatting the whole drive?
I really hope there will be.

Harry, old and desperate.

Harry, I've had that a time or two and it's always been the ISP server down.
However, maybe you need the LSP fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip

Shane:
I tried and it and came up with zero fix on all four counts.
Nothing changed in the log-in behavior.
Remembering vaguely I seem to recall that 'shntl' or something like it was
part of the deleted file names.
The way it looks, I will have to start from scratch and format my drive.
Thanks for your efforts, Shane.

Have you tried repairing Internet Explorer, Harry? Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs. Highlight Internet Explorer, click *Remove*, select
*Repair*.

Try Start | Run, type "SCANREG /FIX" (without the quotes but with the space
between G and /).

Also you can remove (uncheck) Dial Up Networking, (in Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup | Communications). Reboot then
re-install it by reversing the process.

I surely tried every single one of your suggestions, Shane, except for the
explorer thing and nothing doing. When I reinstalled Windows ME, IE 5.5 was
reduced to something that came with the installation and isn't even in
Add/Remove. It would need to be upgraded to 5.5 again. In order to do that,
I must be connected to the internet, which I can't manage.
While I perform all the different maneuvers on my PC, Spybot keeps giving me
these dialog boxes, asking to either accept or deny certain changes. It has
me coming and going and that's how I got into trouble in the first place.
And I used to like this program. Can this specifc dialog feature be turned
off, Shane?
One more thing: could the sound software from Sound Blaster Live have
anything to do with my problem since the sound of the modem tone is
interwoven with it?
Just wondering why noone else cares to contribute.
Partially for that reason I am resigned to the fact having to format my
drive and reinstall Windows ME.
What do you think?
Fortunately I have my backup to do this, without that I wouldn't be able to.

Harry, old and not sure at all.

OK, Harry. I was thinking you were on 5.5SP2. Here's a tip: most, if not
all, ISP CDs include IE6.0sp1 (and possibly still IE5.5sp2). You can browse
the CD (close the autorunning setup), find and copy off the IE folder and
install from that. You may get a branded version but the branding is easily
removed (just ask).

Alternatively, many Computer magazine cover CDs/DVDs contain IE6.0sp1. Quite
often they won't be mentioned until you actually run the CD and it may be
that a DVD version is more likely to contain it (after all they have
gigabytes of space to fill!). This almost certainly *won't* be branded. I'd
be surprised i8f you got a mag with a cover DVD that *didn't* contain
IE6.0sp1.

Finally, you may already have driver CDs containing at least IE5.5sp2 (eg
modem drivers).

Open Spybot. In *Mode*, select *Advanced*. Select *Tools*. Remove the
checkmark from *Resident*. You may want to change Mode back to *Default*
after.

I don't use the Spybot S&D background processes for much the same reason.
With other security settings and programs I've previously mentioned, and a
little care, there's no need whatsoever for anything running in the
background from Spybot or Ad-aware. IOW use Spywareblaster and ie-spyad and
have IE Restricted Zone settings bumped up to max (everything Disabled or
nearest equivalent). I manually merge the ie-spyad reg file(s) but I believe
if the prog itself is run it'll make those Zone changes for you.

Yes. I have only onboard sound and the modem drivers are critical to it
(specifically the Wave Device or Half Wave Device). I'm surprised if an SB
Live card also utilises them but such would appear to be the case. Post back
if you need modem driver installation instructions (I'm a bit rushed atm).

> Just wondering why noone else cares to contribute.

They probably think they'd be *butting in* (it never stops me!).

I think you could end up continually re-installing and you probably don't
need to at all. I appreciate that it can be quicker to re-install than
endlessly troubleshoot but if you don't find out what's wrong what's to stop
it happening again?

When I wrote my last message I wasn't aware that I had the files for IE 5.5,
SP2 on a zip disk.
I installed and repaired it but nothing changed, even the manipulation with
Spybot didn't help.
Everything on that computer works fine, except for the modem not being able
to find the ISP.
What particular file could be missing?
Would un- and reinstalling the modem solve the problem?
If you think I may need those modem drivere instructions, I will be glad to
have them.
For all I know there is nothing wrong with my modem; it is "working
properly", according to my systems info.
My patience is just about used up, Shane.
I was within one click to format and reinstall Windows ME, but hate to loose
what's there now. It took quite a bit of work and time to put it on the
computer.
There simply has to be a way to recover or replace the missing file(s), only
I don't know how.
Hopefully someone in this forum might know and be willing to share it with
me.

Thank you, Shane, for your patience.

Harry, old and exhausted.

Harry, installing modem drivers depends on their packaging. Do yours comes
as a setup file or a zip file? If a zip, extract them to a folder, r-click
My Computer, select Properties | Device Manager. Highlight your modem and
select *Remove*. Close, reboot.

On reboot the modem should be detected and the search for drivers dialogue
open. Point it to the folder you unzipped the drivers to. That should be all
there is to it.

If a setup file, run it.

Thank you, Shane.

My question here would be:
Is the modem driver at fault?
There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with my modem. Let me know if you
still think so.
I am all set to format and starting from scratch.

Probably not. I mean, it's possible. I've got a couple of Motorola drivers
that are supposed to work but screw things up good and proper - including
the one Windows Update keeps trying to force on me. The earlier of those
does work well in XP, but I have to use the one before that for the Motorola
to work in ME.

I've also got a VIA AC97 audio driver that does the same.

iow in my experience if a modem driver doesn't work in ME it's because it's
the wrong driver - despite what the manufacturor says - rather than the
driver being damaged. But you can't rule damage out, it must happen
sometimes!

If you decide to do that, e-mail me at sbeatsondotcoolcatatvirgindotnet,
replacing the at and 2 dots. Send me a mailing address and I'll send you a
copy of the Security Update CD. You'd likely have it in a couple of days. It
makes re-installing the updates a breeze and you'll be on IE6.0sp1 (and
WMP9, MDAC 2.8, DirectX 9.0b). Takes about 5 minutes to install about 95% of
all ME updates. Then you go to WU and get the very few that it doesn't
deliver or that have come out since.

Misread that.

It *could* be.

But it could be the line, anywhere between your modem and your ISP's server.
Or incorrect settings. Or some other device not functioning or incorrectly
installed.

What modem do you have? What type of connection?

Do you know what the right drivers are? That usually refers to the chip used
by a variety of vendors. For instance my Creative modem uses it - but I need
Creative drivers.

How did you install them originally? Is this an OEM copy of ME in which the
drivers are pre-installed? Ideally you'd have a cd including the drivers -
but not necessarily.

Cthelper is a Creative Sound Card driver file. Did you re-install your sound
card drivers? MFC42.DLL errors are quite common (though it's ages since *I*
saw one. Used to see them frequently). One possible solution is to do a
search for all copies of MFC42.DLL on the C: drive. There may be many. Make
backups of those not in the Windows or Windows\System folder then replace
the originals with the one in Windows\System, ie the proper ME version.

No dice, Joan, doesn't work that way!
I've tried it.

Meaning you omit the other two, I gather?
See whether it will, work that way.

Ha, yes, didn't appreciate I've used arthur sixpence so long you wouldn't
know my surname is Beatson. <g>

Harry, go to http://website.lineone.net/~shanebeatson/navbar.htm and click
Feedback. Forgot about that, too. Funny thing is it's the navbar for the
site I briefly put up about how to run the Windows Security Update CD
without installing components you don't want. Then I got sidetracked and now
there doesn't seem much point finishing it if the CD is no longer being
distributed.

Shane, I tried that and it was returened to me as delivery failure,
recipient unknown.
You've got me stumped.

Let's get serious now, Shane and give me something to work with where the
driver CD is concerned.
To update you on my situation, I am left with two possibilities: 1. the
modem or its drivers (which is very unlikely) and 2. the motherboard, since
the sound and the modem are both "onboard"; by that I mean they both can be
en- or disabled in the BIOS. I checked the modem driver and have the most
recent one installed, according to microsoft. Therefore I summarize, it must
either be the modem itself or the motherboard, am I correct?
My plans are to try another modem and if that doesn't work, to get a whole
new motherboard.
Do you have a better idea?
If you do, please, let me know.

Harry, old and open to better ideas.

Re: SOS by Shane

Shane

Harry,

I've just been to my father's today. My sister told me in the week his modem
was knackered. So I took my Motorola SM56 out (seeing as how it was my 3rd
choice modem), made a driver cd and went to Basingstoke. In case Noel reads
this, Slough - literally - stinks.

I did a few tests and his computer seemed unable to communicate with his
modem, ie it appeared to exist *only* in the modems control panel applet.
Given how two weeks ago he e-mailed me about how impressed he was with his
surge protector after the big nearby lightning strike, and we've been having
powerful electrical storms ever since (or according to one football
commentator *electronic storms* - sure hurts when one of those transistors
hits you smack in the middle of your head!), I decided to go ahead and fit
my Motorola.

When I booted up and installed the drivers, his computer recognised his
Smartlink modem. I didn't have time for further tests, but I'm confident he
now has two working modems.

Anyway. That's not what *onboard* means. Onboard is when it's part of the
motherboard. A card can still be enabled or disabled in the BIOS.

But what about the http://website.lineone.net/~shanebeatson/navbar.htm link.
If you clicked Feedback you'd have - at least if using Outlook or Outlook
Express - a blank mail with a valid e-mail address on it, open. If not using
either of those, you'll still see the e-mail address by moving the mouse
over Feedback and looking at the status bar, or by r-clicking and selecting
View Source and scrolling to the bottom.

When you talk of getting a new motherboard you're almost talking about
getting a new computer. It's going a bit over-the-top.

Thank you, Shane.
Now I am back in the groove. Was able to find your address and e-mail you
successfully. There was only one problem with the site you mentioned before,
except for feedback all other links don't want to finish and give me an
option to do different things in order to accomplish it.
Why would that be?
Otherwise we are making progress at last, even if its just in theory so far.
I have ordered a modem over the internet and will try it, before going on to
the next step, if necessary. Meanwhile I will install an updated driver I
downloaded today for my debilitated modem.
Keep you updated on my *progress*.

Harry, old but optimistic.

<vbg> Because I took the site offline, Harry - until finished. But where
there's some relevent information I give the url to just that page. All the
other links the navbar points to are on the same page, being the main one
that isn't finished, so I renamed it to restrict access to it.

Harry, did you install a driver from Windows Update? If so, bear in mind
never to do so again!

I remembered last night I should tell my father not to download the Motorola
SM56 driver update forever offered at Windows Update. It stops the modem
working. You have to remove the drivers and replace with the older ones and
make sure Windows re-installs those. The 2001 ME drivers for this modem are
the last that work - even those offered by Motorola don't work. But Windows
Update is notorious for dodgy drivers.

By the way, I appear to have discovered - to judge by the lack of hits on
Google or Microsoft.com - a bug in the Security Update CD, or one of the
final batch of updates it installs. It doesn't seem too serious and you
probably won't be affected as it seems only to affect the Microsoft Windows
Script documentation, ie scrdoc56en.exe.

Heavens no, Shane. I have the CD for the modem to install the original
driver and downloaded an update from Conexant, but that driver was older
than the one I have, my computer told me so.

Harry, old and not to sure about anything.
