I am fitting a new hard disk to my PC as a replacement for the original.
I wish to run win ME. The PC is an HP Pavilion and came with a Win 98
'recovery' cd. Along the way I have upgraded to Win ME with a non-OEM Win
ME 'upgrade' CD. I have all the necessary product keys and documentaion
still with both cd's. The product ID for the 98 cd includes the string -
OEM-.

My question is .... can I load ME directly onto the new HDD, and use the
'recovery' cd as proof of purchase ? OR, do I have to load Win 98, then
upgrade to Win ME, and will 98 load direct from the 'recovery' cd onto a
completely bare HDD ?

I could ghost an image of my current HDD and simply swap drives, but I
would prefer a fresh start as the PC has already done 4 years on 98
without a reformat or reload and I keep hearing that Win98 registry will
be in a dismal way.

Thanks for the advice.

No.

'Fraid so - unless perhaps you have either:- MS Win95 CD (or floppies) or MS
Win3x floppies, but you will need the set, just one isn't enough.
(*May* even work with DOS 5 or 6 floppies - never tried it)

Your choice, but may save lots of time <g> Good luck!

If the floppies work with ME, Mart, you only need the first (can you imagine
having to insert 21 floppies as proof of eligibility???).

LOL Shane - but you certainly need them with Win3x, MOST (IIRC about 4 or 5
of the 7) floppies are required. Haven't actually tried it with 95 - don't
have those floppies, only the MS upgrade CD which works OK <vbg>

That wouldn't surprise me. I haven't used a floppy as upgrade proof in 98,
ME (or later). Before that the first disk was sufficient, but it was almost
like the way any Ford key would open any other Ford once upon a time.

Meanwhile I wonder why I'm hanging on to 16-bit Win 95 - I don't believe
I'll ever install it again. Maybe I could swap it with someone for W2k Pro
<vbg>.

Mart,

Perhaps I ought to test it as I am in the middle of a clear out and just have
to hand a) DOS 5.0 (3 floppies) a) Windows 3.1 (6 floppies) and Windows 95
(mine though is 22 floppies rather than the 21 Shane mentioned).

That same clear out has brought to the surface enough copies of WordPerfect to
sink a ship (all on floppies of course). 1 x v5.0 (6 disks although the
program itself is on just one), 3 x v5.1 (6 disks each) [Corel didn't believe
in changing the version number expect for major revisions <g>], 1 x v5.2 (8
disks) and 1 x v6.0 (7 disks ) [All for DOS] and one copy of each of v6.0 and
v6.1 for Windows (12 floppies each).

I've yet to find though my 5¼" floppy containing WordPerfect v4.1 which was
the reason for the search. :-( [I have one PC here with an old 3½/5¼ floppy
drive]. Nor DOS 3.2 for which I was also looking.

Cheers,

Mike

Maybe plus the ERD, Mike? Though I am going on memory, anyway. And that's
failing rapidly as nicotine withdrawal becomes acute.

The set I have comprises a Setup Boot Disk and 22 setup floppies. Ah, of
course, I've just realised that my set is Win 95 OSR2 dated 24 August 96. My
Win 95 is on a CD.

Cheers,

Oh'Heck! Mike - if your not careful, you'll have me doing a search too.
Probably packed in amongst the XZ80 & ZX81. And He's back with a new folding

No encouragement - please. As soon as I get the stuff anywhere near the
bin, it sticks to my fingers <g>

Everyone's allowed one mistake - sadly, Clive wasn't!

Talk about 'kick a man when he's down' - the press hung him out to dry.
