Hi, I posted a question concerning aol on the 16th of this
month, saying that I was having problems with aol
broadband.

I am still unable to connect to the internet via my aol
broadband modem, (the modem is a BT Voyager 100).

I have contacted aol helpline numerous times with regards
to this issue, and following todays conversation with
them, I have now been told that there may be a problem
with my windows installer, and that I should repair this.

Unfortunatly, the person I was speaking to was not very
clear on how I should go about doing this.

What I would like to know is, how do I repair this, I am a
complete novice when it comes to computers, and would
really appreciate any help.

Thanks, Don.

Judging by the lame "technical support" AOSmell gave you, one would think
you would cancel that horrible program/ISP and get a real one.

Assuming that the AOL techie knew what they were talking about (NOT a very
likely happenstance!), then look here for the latest version of the MS
Installer - download the file and run it, then try the AOL installer again.

Hi Noel, thanks for your reply.

I downloaded the program you suggested, however after
installing it, I tried running it and it listed 3 items in
the dialogue box.

My webcam, my virus scan and the windows installer that I
had just downloaded.

Which if any of these do I need to remove?

Thanks again, Don.

Do yourself a favor and remove AOSmell. Either that or come back here

Whilst AOL is certainly intrusive your post simply reflects your bias and
personal views. AOL works perfectly well with Win Me (AOL 9 excepted) and
does not cause the problems you seem to feel that it does as can be attested
to by the many AOL users running Win Me including a number of MVPs.

I'm running AOL on dialup here, and have zero experience of AOL on BB.
Please explain more about your latest error messages - what's the EXACT
wording? - why are these three products being listed?
I would suggest disabling your virus scanner while installing any
'known-good' program - particularly if the scanner is Norton (and if it's
NAV2004, then take it back, and demand a refund as 'not fit for purpose'!).

WRT AOL9 - I'm going to load it on my ME box this weekend, and see whether
the UK version behave the same as the US one.
AOL9 UK behaves very well on an XP box (this one!) here.

Hi Noel, ok, when I went to run the program, I got a msg
saying that if I continued further permanent changes would
be made to my system, and that I might have to reinstall
some or all of the programs that used windows installer to
be installed.

The 3 programs listed are as follows, (exactly as listed).

(All Users) Dual Mode USB Camera Plus (5.0.0.0000)
Mc Afee VirusScan (5.1.0)
Windows Installer Clean Up (2.05.00.0000)

I have already disabled my virus scanner.

They do with no problem whatsoever. If you have problems in receiving e-mails
from those using AOL it would suggest that it is YOUR system that is having
the problems.

No, AOL users can't receive emails from some of my accounts. I have no
problem receiving from AOL. It's AOL's "spam filters" that do it. My host
server has emailed them and, surprise, surprise, they don't respond even
though they sent the emails with an account that they know AOL will accept.
If you have AOL's phone number, that would be nice so that my host server
can call them and, hopefully, get it sorted out. What's worse is that AOL
doesn't even tell you they've rejected your email.

This is not the first time this has happened. They used to reject any emails
from my primary server, ONO, and it took ONE YEAR before AOL would
acknowledge that they were blocking ONO without cause and unblocked them
(we're talking over a million ONO users).

When I had AOL on my machine, it took it over and made it impossible to go
to web sites unless I used AOL's browser. My MSN Messenger wouldn't work
either. The nano second that my billing period was over, my computer went
back to normal. Four techs from ONO came to my house and could not figure
out why I was having problems surfing and were considering changing my ether
card and/or cable modem. Fortunately, the AOL billing period was up the next
day and AOL let go of my computer.

Now what AOL may or may not do with a computer that isn't noticeable, I
haven't a clue but I suspect it isn't very groovy.

This is while running the AOL installer? - or the Windows Installer?

If the Windows Installer, then you don't need to uninstall anything,
although you may need to reinstall those three items at a later date to be
able to remove them properly. (to correct changes in the uninstall routine)
Before running the Windows installer, do a Search for files named MSI.DLL -
rename all copies found to MSI.OLD. then run it, and if you get the same
message, allow it to continue.

If it's the AOL installer, then you'd best find out WTF AOL are playing at
by going back to them! - they have no business messing with other
applications on your PC.

...and renamed them?

once you have the Installer installed, it may be a good idea to reinstall
the two other applications immediately (so you don't forget about it
later<g>)
that's the USB Camera and the McAfee
The Clean-up program is irrelevant at the moment, since that's part of the
program that you're installing!

Sorry about that, as I was saying, I found 2 files on my
hard drive, one in windows sys, and the other in windows
vcm.

I tried to rename them but found that although the one in
windows vcm accepted the name change, when I tried to
change the one in windows sys, I got a msg saying that it
cannot rename MSI as the specified file is being used by
windows.

Don,

You need to boot to DOS using a floppy and rename msi.dll to msi.old. This is
explained in the KB associated with reinstalling the Windows Installer
KB324638 - "OFFXP: "The MSIEXEC.EXE File Is Linked to a Missing Export
MSI.DLL:222" Error Message When You Try to Install, Update, or Remove a
Windows Installer-Based Program" (http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=324638).

Reboot and try again - if that fails, try it in Safe Mode

Noel I sure have to agree with you about later versions of Norton, Nothing
but trouble. I switched to EZarmor last December and have had no problems
since, even when I forgot to disable it once during an MS update. never
again on Norton even though my wife is using Systemworks 2003 on WIN 98SE
with little or no problems, but she not very good about updates her MS
Software. Checks virus updates every day so no virus issues so far.

One of the grosser spam filters is blocking domains that are listed as
sending alot of spam.

A sad state in many large ISPs (though I have to hand it to mine, their
techsupport has improved considerably in the last few years)

NP.

I think it's clear that Don has Windows Installer version soup, possibly as a
result of reinstalling WinMe over itself, otherwise there wouldn't be a copy
of msi.dll in the windows\vcm folder.

and have down loaded the program to my computer.

I do however have some concerns about this as I have not
been getting these error Messages, when I have the modem
drivers downloaded to my disk and try to install them, I
get a Message telling me that the modem wizard needs to
reboot my computer, and would I like to do this now or
later.

If I press yes to reboot, the computer starts up as
normal, but then as soon as it loads I get the same
Message asking if I want to reboot.

Will booting to
