I can't seem to find an answer for this one...and please,
not too technical or I'm lost. When putting a CD in, the
computer locks up, with the exception of the cursor. It
doesn't matter what type, whether audio or otherwise. At
times when I try to "trick" it into running the disc, and
initiating the start of a game, I'll get the "Insert the
disc now" message, although it's already in. Any ideas??
Thanks!

Mike:

Bootup in safe mode.

Remove the CD-ROM and any duplicates in Control Panel - System - Device =
Manager.

Reboot and let Windows re-install the CD-ROM.

Did it help?

Thanks Zee, but your suggestion didn't work.

Additional information...when the puter locks up, it also
doesn't allow me to eject the disc. I have to manually
shut down, then hold my finger on the eject button as it
powers up..one other note, the disc is faily warm once I
get it out. I had the same problem a month or two ago, and
it seemed to rectify the problem on its own. Pretty much
at a loss here.

Mike,

I wonder if the problem isn't a faulty drive. Maybe you could test it in =
another PC?

Or try a different CD ROM in your PC?

If it's hardware, you'd better not play too much with the software.

Good advice. I guess I'll just have someone with a LOT
more skill then I have take a look. Thanks for your help,

I'm with Zee on this - suspect a faulty CD-ROM drive.

Just as a further test, try booting with the WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk
into Real Mode DOS, select CD-ROM support. See if it is recognised. If so,
note the temporary letter allocated and use the DIR command to see if you
can read contents of a CD in the CD-ROM :-

At the A:\> prompt type DIR X: (where X is the letter allocated above and
note the colon after it!)

That should prove whether its a WinMe issue or not.
