    - Disc Partitioning Problem with new Dell XPS Laptop I have just bought a Dell XPS and want to mult-boot with Linux. I have already build a similar system with my desktop although this machine is very pre-Vista! The PC has a 500GB (465.76) drive. The partitioning structure is: EISA Configuration 125MB (any one know what this is for?) Recovery (D) 10GB OS (C) 235.85GB Unallocated 219.78GB I am very disappointed that Dell have sacrificed three primaries for a single OS! Disc Manager wont allow me the shrink the C: drive any smaller despite only having a few GB of programs on it. I would like to know why this restriction applies and if I will cause problems if I try to shrink it with a third party tools bearing in mind that Partition Magic apparently has a problem with drives over 400GB.     - Lost precious family pictures: User Profile Error -Logged on with a Temporary Profile Without me realizing it I was Logged on with a Temporary Profile due t some profile error. I could not see my pictures and documents. searched for it found them in different folder. so I moved it back t Pictures folder. But when logged off again and logged back in, it logged me with m original profine. NOW all my files that I moved when I was logged in a temp profile, is GONE How can I recover those files?     - Vista 32 bit - file/properties/details tab missing info for .sys files Hi all, Just recently I have noticed that when viewing file properties for .sys files the 'details' tab contains very little information, as can be seen here with tcpip.sys: http://www.mikeyjames.com/psys.jpg It seems about 50/50 whether details from a .sys file will be interpreted properly by Vista. This was confirmed by using System Information: http://www.mikeyjames.com/sysinf.jpg I then noticed that a third party app (SiSoft Sandra) was able to read the info without any problems: http://www.mikeyjames.com/psandra.jpg I thought I'd try and see what effect changing the file extension had & changed it to tcpip.dll. This resulted in all the info being displayed: http://www.mikeyjames.com/pdll.jpg This also worked when I renamed to tcpip.exe. The problem happens on my laptop with Vista Business and Desktop with Vista Ultimate. I've tried running ShellExView and disabling any 3rd party extensions to no avail.     - Vista and uploading photos Hello out there, I have a huge puzzle to solve. A friend of mine cannot upload any photos (jpg) to his camera club web site. From the same connections in his house his wife's computer can. His computer worked about two months ago but has stopped functioning (uploads only). So we know it worked before but we don't know what happened since then. He is using Vista on a dell computer. I removed McAfee and installed AVG. no change. I verified the firewall without success.     - 1 week and still no success: Vista x64 install hangs up! cannot install Hi everyone, When i try to run setup, it goes to the first graphical screen (with the mouse and the vista blue/green background), and at the first attempt to write to the Hardrive, the system hangs up.....and reboots within a few seconds of that! :mad: My setup consists of: e8400 Asus P5Q pro (with latest Bios) 4 x 1GB crucial ballistix PC2-6400 2 x 250 SATA WD2500AAKS so far, here is what I've tried: a) Removed 2 x 1 GB sticks (from DIMM2 and DIMM4 slots). b) Forced Bios Timings to memory 4-4-4-12 (as oem says) and 2.0 Vdimm c) tried a different install disk of Vista x64, and even 32-bit versions d) removed all drives except one, and tried each one, one by one. in all 4 cases, it did the same thing.....it hangs up several seconds into the 1st graphical screen (after loading files and the windows scroll bar is finished). Again, it seems like there is an attempt to write to the HD (I see the HD flash for a split sec) and then it hangs! To try to see if it was a Hardware issue, I tried installing Windows XP Pro, and it installed fine :sarc:..........i had to format the drives, but it installed fine. next, I tried to install vista again, and it still hangs up! I'm out of ideas at this point. i've been at this for almost a week without success.     - Incorrectly updated my Nvidia chipset driver OS: Vi$ta Ultimate x64 VGA: Radeon 4850 Board: M2N-E (nForce 570 Ultra) RAM: 6G Adata DDR2-800 I removed the old 15.01 driver completely from the Control Panel and now I could not get back into Vi$ta. I entered Safe Mode and installed Nvidia 15.23's SATA RAID driver. No go. Window$ would blue-screen after the login screen.     - "dead keys" (accents) not working Hello, I have a very strange issue with my Belgian azerty laptop keyboard. All dead keys, those are the keys used to place accents (=A8 , ^ , =B4 , ` , ~) above letters, are not working when I try to create a letter with an accent. However, when I keep the dead key pushed, after a second or so, an entire set of the dead key appears (e.g. ^^^^^^^^) after which I can type my character which will now have an accent above it (e.g. ^^^^^^^^=EA). Of course, this is not a suitable solution. I know the keys are working (if I try to use the other non dead characters on the same key, they work immediately) and nothing is wrong with my keyboard.     - vista couldnt have it worse!!!! 1) First of all its expensive, in some countries vista ulitmate costs 700 us dollars! 2) it needs a new fast computer for it to run well enough to use 3) you often need to throw away perfectly functioning peripherals because stupid vista cant use the XP drivers and then you have to buy new ones 4) you often need to throw away perfectly functioning software because vista-crapista is no longer compatible with them. 5) you lost valuable time and energy just to get stupid vista to work 6) it then takes up more energy for it to function thrashing the disks all the time, needing 3d accelerated graphic cards for aero that gobble up the watts and making the cpus work harder (yes the more the cpu works the more energy it uses). The PSU (power supply units) have jumped from 250-350 watts to 500 watts or more for a stupid computer than can run vista. 7) Having all that crap in an era where people are out of jobs, the economy is in a crisis and credit is harder to get.... having all that vista-energy waste when global warming threatens to destroy civilization is a crime to humanity.     - COM component registration problem we have an application for which installer has been created using installshield. this appilcation is installed for all user of that PC. it is done by setting ALLUSERS property to 2 in installer. this application consists of COM server exe, which is used by main application. Once this application is installed by administrator on any PC it works perfectly fine for that user but if any other user tries to execute an application for first time, OS does some configuration for that user and PC restarts. different behaviour has been observed on XP & vista. Operating system XP Operating system does configuration for each group(users group defined by OS) once, when application is executed by user of that group for first time. after that any user of a group for which configuration has been done can sucessfully execute an application. Operating system Vista OS does configuration for each user of that Pc and do not retain this information(i.e. is any other user access an application it configure for this user and previous user setting has been destroyed) so at any time only one user can successfully execute an application. it is been observed that there is some problem related with COM server registration as if COM server EXE has been executed before executing application no problem occurs who so ever execute an application. I am trying to figuare out and repair why I am unable to load security updates (I get error 80244019) and defender (I get error 0x80244019). When I try to access any search engine besides Goggle, I can not bring it up. So I can't get to Hotmail or Yahoo mail. Has anyone had this problems and if so, how did you fix it?     - auto play not opening usb storage Hi, I used to open usb storage devices by choosing an option from a menu when I inserted my usb device. Now autoplay doesn't open these storage devices and I have to open my computer and access the folders from there. I have tried changing autoplay settings but still not working. In other words, the Reg's story was correct. The spokesperson sent further clarification: "What's changing is Microsoft is giving six more months where it will provide downgrade media for XP Professional for OEMs and system builders to provide to their customers who purchase Windows Vista Ultimate and Business editions - (which the company figures will be) largely going to be small businesses since that's the audience that would want/use XP Pro. So it's the same old downgrade right thing that was in the EULA (End User License Agreement) before; it's just Microsoft is providing the media to partners a few months more." "The same caveat with providing the downgrade media as before applies, which is OEMs and system builders don't have to do so if they don't want - it's their business decision to make." Microsoft has extended XP's end-of-life date before. In Apri 2008 l, Microsoft officials said the company was not going to extend again the date on which it required OEMs to stop preloading XP on new machines. That date was June 30, 2008. Microsoft did say that system builders, a k a white box vendors, would be allowed to continue to preload XP on new systems until January 31, 2009. OEMs and system builders both were OK'd to continue preloading XP on new ultra-low-cost systems through 2010, as many of those systems were and are incapable of running Vista. Bottom line: Even though Microsoft is maintaining publicly that Vista is finally ready for prime time, it is allowing PC makers to continue to offer customers XP. So what's a user to believe?     - A Fool's Paradise... Yes, an old phrase, and those that blindly support Vista are in a state of happiness based on false hope. Not surprising the meaning is lost on the handful of vocal idiots that infest this newsgroup and spill their bitter bile which flows here like a overflowed river. To hear them tell it Vista is nearly perfect and if you don't share in the bliss they enjoy then surely you must be foolish and know not how to install or configure Vista properly. No. One only need spend a few minutes at Google to see the torrent of complaints and bewildering number of web pages devoted to discussing Vista issues. Many that arise show themselves on boxes with name brands where Vista came preinstalled. One would expect a newsgroup created to discuss such issues would be an oasis from the storm. It is not. Fools do foolish things and this newsgroup never has a shortage of idiots eager to praise Microsoft to the highest rather than holding them accountable for the ugly thing called Vista. Yes Vista might be pretty on the surface, but look below the surface and it's often a ugly old hag. Slow, plodding along and often rude with endless nagging usually over superficial things plus a unique ability to be seemingly unable to do simple things like remember settings and instead with no cause or warning reverting back to some arbitrary setting without even telling you the user a change was made. Then of course the old annoyance of cryptic messages like Windows Explorer needed to close, yet nothing but coded messages buried in some event log that at bests only hints as to why something internal to Windows keeps crashing.     - Buggy Windows Live Mail When I send a message using the Newsgroups, like this one, when I clidk the send word it goes to the Outbox folder and then it goes to my Sent items folders that is under the Storage Folder. Then I have to open the "Sent item" to find the message still there and then I open it and then I send it and it goes. Why these additional steps? It is a bug with Windows LIve Mail?     - QTimes and iTunes - worried with these uploads Within the past few days I got a free download or update of QTimes and now I am also getting a 73 MB update of both QTimes and iTunes. I am worried since I do not think that I use these Apple things (Maybe I had used it innadvertedly before), I use mostly the Window things that came with my Vista Ultimate, and never, never listen to music in my computer. Let me ask, are these QuickTime things and iTunes necessary to be in my computer even if I do not think that I use them? It is helpful to leave these there instead of deleting them? I have 2-3 apps that save files in 2-10 seconds just as all other apps do. But on occasion (about 50-70% of the time) these 2-3 apps take 15-20 MINUTES to save a file.     - Vista won't boot after format of secondary drive I have a brand new computer (running Vista) with 2 drives - a 1 Tb SATA drive (C: primary), and a 320 G IDE drive (D: secondary). System booted up fine. I knew the IDE drive had errors on it, so I copied everything I could to the C: drive and re-formatted D:. Normal shutdown. Next reboot - all I got was the Microsoft "green line" for about 10 seconds and a black screen. Safe mode showed it stopped at CRCDISK. What happened? Vista was pre-installed and I supplied the 320 G drive. Did the format delete something off the D: drive that Vista was expecting?     - NETWORKING PROBLEM I have: A new Dell desktop with VISTA home premium. An old desktop with XP SP3. Two laptops with XP SP3. All access the internet through a router. The internet connection is working. The 3 XP machines were home networked and had file sharing between them. That network still works. I have tried to add the new Dell Vista computer to the network. The Dell recognizes the 3 XP computers and can take shared files from them. The XP machines do NOT recognize the Dell Vista computer or the printer attached to it. Netbios resolution is working as I can browse the domain and use net use to map network drive on all DCs within the domain. Also, all Windows XP machines can join to the domain with netbios name. Netbios over tcpip is enabled and IPV6/local firewall is disabled. All client machines are on the same subnet. No WINS is used on the network. The error message is: An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. We have a new CIO who has issued a directive that all (or most) apps should have earned the Microsoft 32 bit logo compliant seal. Hi,

My laptop's winsxs folder bloated to 7.75GB of a 60GB disk. This
appears to be rather large especially for a modest laptop with few
applications. This happened rather suddenly. It adds substantially
to
backups as well. (By contrast, winsxs on my XP desktop is a few
hundred MB). Is there any help for this?

I am running Vista Premium SP1 on an HP572 laptop.
