The bright light generated by Vista bothers me too. I was able to adjust
that on my laptop where the Power Options on Control Panel allowed to take
down the intensity. I don' know if you can do that.
Another thing I also do in pick softer background colors like gray, blue so
that the white background on screen displays is not always in my face
hurting my eyes.
