    - Vista/Norton/Windows One Care Howdy Y'all ! My eight year old Dell finally bit the dust and bought a new Gateway preloaded with Norton AV. I have a paid subscription through 01/09 with Windows One Care that I have used for three years with my Dell and never had problems with it. I have always disliked the hoggy Norton and McAfee AV's and will uninstall Norton on the new pc using the uninstall download from Symantec and probably some manual removal as well. My question is : will WOC work with Vista ?? Or should I use some of the free AV's ie Avast, AVG free, etc etc. My pc is only two days old and I don't want to spend days attempting to download new programs and fight with firewalls :) and potentially messing up new pc :) Y'all dodge those nasty tornadoes today !!     - Trying to install program - Administrator issues Hi, I have read through some previous threads, but there wasn't anything there that I was looking for. I am trying to install Client Service Installer.msi and it is a Windows Installer Package. I get the message that 'The administrator has set policies to prevent this installation'. Now I had this with another program and I was able to run it as administrator, but this time in the drop down menu there is no 'run as'. Is there a way that I can install this program.     - Open word document with Vista FTP I have a XP ftp server running ServU ftp server version 6. All clients connect to it via the lan: ftp://server or internet ftp://outsidetoserver. Users can browse the folders set up in ServU, and XP users even with IE7 can open a word document for example. However Vista users cannot. They get as far as seeing the word document then when they double-click to open it repeatedly asks for username and password. Even if I type the ServU administrator or the administrator of the box username and password it just does the same. I have tried lowering the security settings of IE7, upgrading ServU to version 7 and nothing seems to work. There's nothing in event logs either.     - Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) Startup Fixed !!?? Quick summary: WSR did not start on Startup as it was set to do. It could not be started manually either, except occasionally after the computer had been running for several hours. If I turned UAC off it started every time at boot and if closed would restart manually. I created: Microsoft incident SRX1065964782. After a couple days I got a response from MS: Try Clean Boot. If that doesn't work, zip up a bunch of logs and send them. It didn't work. I zipped up the logs but the MS server wouldn't accept some because they were too large. Emailed the MS person asking what to do to get them through. No response. After four days with no response, I removed my Logitech headset and decided I was quit with WSR. I had some time on my hands so I decided to optimize the services starting on my computer using the information at http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/service411.htm. I received a response from the MS person this morning. The person did not address the issue of the too big logs. Instead, I read: Uninstall anti-virus and firewall because engines are still running even at Clean Boot. Well, I knew that was wrong because I had been looking at those services after Clean Boot and the anti-virus engine and its task scheduler were not running. The firewall was the MS firewall that is part of Vista. So, if that were the problem then there should have been lots more than two people reporting trouble. MS response continued if the problem doesn't go away try creating a new user profile. Well, okay, I thought, I'll try creating a new user profile, but before I did that I reconnected my headset and waited while Vista found and installed the software. When it was done, WSR started! I stopped it and started it again. I did a warm boot. It started automatically. I scratched my head. I did not create a new user profile. I cold-booted the system to see if it would continue to start. It did. I'm not sure what corrected the problem. Because of the time lag with MS Support, I had given up on fixing the issue and made several changes to the system before getting an unhelpful response. Perhaps this will help someone else.     - GOOGLE TOOLBAR PAGE STUCK I have a several month old Dell laptop with Vista, not SP1. Yesterday I came up with a page from Google Toolbar which says "This program cannot display the webpage". This happens on boot- no browser or anything else open. I cannot close this page. I cannot find anyplace in Control Panel to remove Google Toolbar. I tried a system restore back to 5-1 but the page is still there. I use both Firefox and IE7, but no Google toolbar, as far as I know.     - Price on Anytime Upgrade I have Windows Vista Business 64-bit slovak OEM which cost me 3 750 Sk = 118 Euro I wont to upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit slovak OEM with Anytime Upgrade, which said it will cost me 149 Euro. It is insane, because NEW Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit slovak OEM cost 5 100 Sk = 159 Euro. Rather I buy new Vista Ultimate.     - Bluetooth USB Dongle does not "sleep" well Have installed a Mogo Bluetooth USB Adaptor and it works well (after restarting the Bluetooth Support Service) except when the computer goes to sleep and it fails to restart when awakened. The adaptor light stays on (and remains steady) when asleep and also when the laptop is subsequently awakened.     - Lotus notes mail I use lotus notes 6.5 via a vpn, I can open all of the programmes except the mail file. the programme starts to open then hangs and freezes the whole programme. the following problem log has appeared on my home computor.     - read only files i hav a new asus lappy with the main hd drive partitioned in 2 plus recovery section (as it comes), and 2 external usb hdd in enclosures. am running vista ultimate, i am the administrator of the system, only user, no guest accounts.     - Chkdsk utitily hi, I am using windows vista for the last 1 year and for the last fe days, i m getting errors like some of the files are corrupt and run th chkdsk utility.     - transfering files from XP-HD to Vista-HD I have recently had to replace my computer due to a motherboard failure. I have the old Hard Disks from my XP (Pro) system installed inside my Vista (Ultimate) Box. When I try to use files from the old system I come up with access errors - the files 'belong' to an unrecognised user (S-1-5-21-etc).     - Chess Titans doesn't work anymore, after computer locked up I was playing a game of Chess Titans, and while playing it, I opened up an IE window to access the internet. I couldn't connect to the internet - I had been able to connect a few minutes earlier, but the usb wireless adapter I'm using is a little flaky. Then I couldn't close the browser at all, and CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't do anything. Vista just froze, it wasn't a BSOD, it just froze. I waited several minutes, while trying CTRL-ALT-DEL, ALT-TAB, CTRL-ESC, unplugging and reconnecting the usb wireless adapter and the usb keyboard. Vista never responded. I had to hold down the power button on the computer for several seconds to turn it off. Then I turned it back on, and I ran a "chkdsk", and it said "Windows has checked the file system and found no problems." But when I try to run Chess Titans, nothing happens.     - Delete a partition to recover space to drive C: Situation Drive C: (NTFS) 5GB free space contains OS, program files, program data, some users application data Drive D: (NTFS) 8GB free space contains Users, Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, Saved Games, Searches, Videos, program files (miscellaneous utility types of programs that are easily recoverable), maildata (.pst archives, personal folders), MSOCache Objective Increase free space on drive C: by merging and completely deleting drive D Options A) Move all data from drive D to an external drive F, change Outlook files to C drive, modify settings for location of D:\Users\* to C: \Users\* in Vista Use Vista Computer Management, Disk Management to delete volume D: and then extend volume C. It isn't clear that deleting volume D would allow the now unallocated space to be extended to volume C. It looks like one might be stuck without being able to add the space to volume C and that the unallocated space could only be used to create new partitions. Is this correct? It is definitely not what I want. B) Use Symantec's PartitionMagic, Acronis Disk Manager, or Paragaon Partition Manager. Any comments about any of these products? After using these products will I have a single partition as desired? Will I find myself forever married to the product until I scrap the hard drive or the system? C) Bite the bullet. Copy contents of D: to F:. Remove the partitions format the drive, reinstall Vista and all programs building a new install from scratch and then recover data only from external drive F to new drive C. Any suggestions? Option A would be preferred, except that I don't think it will work. When it comes to option B, I would spend the $40 to $70 bucks if I knew that a) it would not leave me with a virtual drive manageable only with the software, b) it would facilitate the software configuration and make the move painless. My fear is that in the end I would be sacrificing some portion of my drive to PartionMagic (or whichever) and still have to manually configure MSOCache, maildata, etc as well as do some app reinstalls.     - Word 97-2003 merge docs on Vista Since transitioning to Vista a couple of weeks ago, and old Word 97-2003 merge documents will only open as read only. The main document will open normally, and I can make and save changes. But the data source file in Word will not accept any changes. When I go to exit and save my updates to my data source I keep getting the response it is a read only. I've already checked the properties and attributes, and all are set where they should be.     - Ambiguous message when exploring network When I explore Network a yellow bar appears "File sharing is turned off. Some network computers and devices might not be visible. Click to change..." Why wouldn't I be able to see other computers and devices if I'm not allowing incoming connections for file sharing? Core networking is active which enables ICMP. No outgoing rules are active.     - defective vista... look this defective vista is..kind of driving me crazy..one of us has to have some relief..i am dealing with vista makeing the computer run super slow...the little freeze ups..that all the hundreds of up dates and service pack one.. has not goten rid of..but one thig.i got to get fixed.is this stupid windows media.player..out of start up..the black bar at the bottom flashes a couple of times.then like 60 secounds.. the windows media player comes on and it want let you knock it off.for a minute.or it freezes up and i have to do..ctrl/alt/delete.. i have looked every where.to find a way.to stop this media player from comeing on during start up..my full version of vista.that i bought..it does not do this..just the vista that came in the new lap top.. i guess i am trying to keep this vista going.to hope for a miricle,that an up date will come and strighten this defective vista out..i know im a fool..just got that,i cant give up thing going on..any help..i think you..     - Drivers, Vista and 0x8007000d help please! Help! We can't get Windows Vista to recognize a Creative Zen Touch. The PC already has latest Windows Media Player 11 update. 1) After plugging the unit it, it says drivers need to be installed. After picking the options to let Window Vista pick a driver, it redirects to a Windows Page. That page tries to install KB940199. (attempts to use the supplied Creative drivers didn't work). 2) KB940199 wants to install an msu file. When executing that, it creates a popup with error 0x8007000d "Installer encountered an error". There doesn't seem to be a way around that, but it's not a good sign that installing a KB is causing an error with no decription. 3) Searching the web suggests that this is related to an activation error. We tried reactiving on the phone, but that didn't work. The automated version would not supply a new key. When connected to a human (on a noisy connection!), the person concluded that Vista was already activated and that we need to go to their support line (which he didn't mention is not working on Saturday!). Anyways, does anyone have any ideas? Is the 0x8007000d error a sign that there's a Vista activation problem, or is this a bogus error that should be disregarded? (and the *real* issue is tracking down Vista drivers for the Creative somewhere else)?? Why should it be so hard to get an mp3 player to work on Vista? It worked fine on XP? Thanks... It is just such counter-productive megalomania, muddleheaded egoism, and intellectual aberrancy that stirs Adam to carve out space in the mainstream for ungrateful politics. I want to draw two important conclusions from this. The first is that Adam and his gofers are wolves in sheep's clothing who will create profound emotional distress for people on both sides of the issue eventually, and the second is that the justification he gave for seeking to judge people by the color of their skin while ignoring the content of their character was one of the most addlepated justifications I've ever heard. It was so addlepated, in fact, that I will not repeat it here. Even without hearing the details you can still see my point quite clearly: Adam keeps telling everyone within earshot that honesty and responsibility have no cash value and are therefore worthless. I'm guessing that Adam read that on some Web site of dubious validity. More reliable sources generally indicate that he isn't as smart as he thinks he is. As an interesting experiment, try to point this out to Adam. (You might want to don safety equipment first.) I think you'll find that if he had even a shred of intellectual integrity, he'd admit that he has no evidence or examples to back up his point. Still, I recommend you check out some of his commentaries and draw your own conclusions on the matter. Adam teaches workshops on clericalism. Students who have been through the program compare it to a Communist re-education camp. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Of course, if Adam had learned anything from history, he'd know that I challenge him to point out any text in this letter that proposes that we ought to worship feckless mountebanks as folk heroes. It isn't there. There's neither a hint nor a suggestion of such a thing. We no longer have the luxury of indulging in universalist, altruistic principles that, no matter how noble they may appear, have enabled the most self-satisfied spouters I've ever seen to compose paeans to irrationalism. Didn't Adam tell his comrades that he wants to make people suspicious of those who speak the truth? Did he first give any thought to what would happen if he did? Of course, that question is ridiculous -- as ridiculous as his gormless platitudes. None but the grotesque can deny that he says that the sun rises just for him. What he means by this, of course, is that he wants free reign to threaten the existence of human life, perhaps all life on the planet. I understand that I become truly impatient with people who refuse to recognize the key role that he is playing in the destruction of our civilization, but from the fog and mist of his disquisitions rises the leering grimace of nihilism. An equal but opposite observation is that I and Adam part company when it comes to the issue of quislingism. He feels that those who disagree with him should be cast into the outer darkness, should be shunned, should starve, while I suspect that he needs to stop living in a fool's paradise. But there's the rub; his idea of mutinous autism is no political belief. It is a fierce and burning gospel of hatred and intolerance, of murder and destruction, and the unloosing of an irascible blood-lust. It is, in every sense, a doctrinaire and pagan religion that incites its worshipers to an infernal frenzy and then prompts them to precipitate riots. Adam does not merely undermine the current world order. He does so consciously, deliberately, willfully, and methodically. His undertakings were never about tolerance and equality. That was just window dressing for the "innocents". Rather, someone has been giving Adam's brain a very thorough washing, and now Adam is trying to do the same to us. Several things he has said have brought me to the boiling point. The statement of his that made the strongest impression on me, however, was something to the effect of how he is a refined gentleman with the soundest education and morals you can imagine. Forgive me for boring you with all the gory details, but Adam's hypocrisy is transparent. Even the least discerning among us can see right through it. It's easy to tell if Adam's lying. If his lips are moving, he's lying. Although Adam demonstrates a great deal of ignorance and presumption when he says that he commands an army of robots that live in the hollow center of the earth and produce earthquakes whenever they feel like shaking things up a bit on the surface, the fact remains that in order to convince us that he has the authority to issue licenses for practicing heathenism, Adam often turns to the old propagandist trick of comparing results brought about by entirely dissimilar causes. Now that you've read the bulk of this letter, it should not come as a complete surprise that there can be no argument that when I first realized that Mr. Adam Albright is a proponent of "paternalism" -- a term Adam uses catachrestically in place of "Pyrrhonism" -- a cold shudder ran down my back.     - Folders in Outlook Express Disappearing A year ago I set up sub folders under "Local Folders" in Windows Mail. Everytime I opened my email the sub folders would be displayed under "Local Folders." Now the only folder displayed is "Local Folders." However, when I double click on "Local Folders" a box opens to the right which reflects all the sub folders in the "Local Folders" and my emails are there. When I double click on a sub folder, it then shows up in the left hand box under "Local Folders." When I close Windows Mail and open again, the sub folders once again are not displayed. I have to go through the process again of clicking on each folder to display it under "Local Folders." Has anyone experienced this problem and found a solution to resolving? The green bar will cycle through about two to three times, but then it stops moving. It moves forward just a little bit every 5 minutes though, so if I leave it like that for about 40 minutes then Vista will be able to boot to my desktop. And when I try to restart my computer, it just stays at the 'Shutting Down" screen forever. The longest I've let the shutting down screen just stay there was 20 minutes. I had to cut the power. Anything that has to do with networking seems to make my computer freeze up. I can start up in Safe Mode but not Safe Mode with Networking. And when I waited the 40 minutes start my comp up, the Vista said the the "Network cable is unplugged", but it wasn't.     - White screen Hello all. I'm new here, all the way from Iceland so my english is maybe not so good. I've had a problem with my computer but it's showing white screen. I maybe turn it on and a few minutes later it's completely white. Sometimes it showes first stripes, black and white. I've googled it but not found much so I went here to ask. For about 2 months ago I had problem with BSOD but re-installed Vista and it was OK. My computer is Packard Bell SB87 (something like that, not sure) and with Vista Home Premium. hi,

I have been transferring photos from my camera with no problems ever
since I purchased my camera about a year ago..

but now when I connect the camera I think it connects something in the
background every time I connect the camera.. and the computer not only
slows down to a crawl, it becomes practically unusable.. the mouse
"freezes", it doesn't respond, it does jerky movements.. I can tell
something's running in the background, but I can't tell what.. as soon
as I disconnect the camera it's ok again..

now I just got this notification (screenshot):

why would the computer now install this (whatever this is) EVERY TIME I
connect the camera? (the SAME camera.. I only have one..)
