unable to carryout silent registry import - Windows Vista
I'm trying to import a batch of reg settings from a personal drive on
the network. The syntax is correct regedit /s h:\MyRegSetting.reg
Even when I test the reg file with a manual import (Right-click,
merge..) it still fails. Yet runs fine when run from a local drive.
Normally this wouldn't bother me but I need to loop through a few
settings for about 300 users. Any ideas?
Recap:
Merge from the network - fails ERROR: "Cannot import
h:MyRegsetting.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file
system error."
Merge locally - works fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

folder view resets itself :: BUG!
I know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem
is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it,
even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer.
This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose
large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead. Sometimes other
folders will somehow change views by themselves too. This is really annoying.
Someone suggested a fix months ago, but I do not remember how. Would
appreciate tips on this. I *do* already have checked on "remember folder's
view settings" enabled as well.
Running:
Vista Ultimate 64bit w/ SP1
I tried this method, made it even worst:

Run Vista from an external HD (dual boot with XP on an internal HD)
Hi,
I am curious if Vista can be run from one of those portable external
hard drives that I see in Staples, etc... rather than have to install
another internal hard drive. I want to dual-boot with XP (already
installed on an internal HD) and it would also be great if I can bring
that external HD with us when we travel and hook it up to my wife's XP
laptop and be able to boot up in Vista too. We need something for
testing our software in Vista.
Thanks!

ok here's the story... i was messin around on the computer.... something..
umm.. wet.. got on the keyboard... (i have a laptop) i wiped it up fast....
thing is.. before i wiped it up.. i didn't turn off my laptop.. All sorts of
crazy things started happening... i know i pressed a bunch of keys and i'm
sure several unknown shortcuts (i hate vista)
ANyway...
when i finally got it to restart and calm down... the screen was completely
upside down.. i mean... flip the laptop over to be able to read anything...
well with a system restore.. i fixed that.. but what i didn't fix was the
color... now everything is a purpulish.. and all blues, yellows, and other
normal colors are super intense..
I have gone through the screens and looked at the display things and
everything is set to where my color should be normal.. yet its not.....
can someone please please please give me a suggestion.... Tag: test Tag: 373120

Acccounts in Vista -I'm having trouble
I asked this question at the end of a longer thread I'd started, and I
guess it is old news so no one looks to see that I've taken advice,
but need some more.
In short. I've been about a year on my Vista home prem. machine, and
have not set up administrator account and so I am using it with its
power that I don't quite understand, which they tell me leaves me more
open to invaders etc..
So they convinced me. I tried to start a new user account, but saw
that it does not have all the files and programs that I depend on. It
seems to say, Start over and do all that stuff you did over a year's
time all over again.
Question: How do I make a user account with what I have?
I'd think I could just call what I have now a user account and create
an administrator account beside it, but I haven't been able to figure
out how to do it.

PC's froze this morning
So I have two computers using Vista SP1 and both get turned off every night.
This morning started up the first pc and everything went fine during boot and
log-in. Then when I tried to start an application the p.c froze with the
round "hour-glass" timer showing. Didin't think much of it. I re-booted and
everything was fine. Started up the 2nd p.c. a while later and exactly the
same problem, only this time I went for the "start" menu first and not an
application. Now I think this is quite odd. The same problem on different
p.c.'s on the same day using the same operating system. Re-booted the 2nd
p.c. and again everything is okay. Anyone else have the same problem today? Tag: test Tag: 373069

Install vista via Bootable USB drive
Hi
I had a fire a few months back which burnt my Acer T180 case. I've
managed to change the case and get all the parts working again except
the DVD rom which was melted and beyond repair.
As my whole house is wireless I'm not really bothered about getting a
new DVD rom - my other PC controls the network and has a DVD writer
inside. Once vista is installed the network will take care of
everything.
My problem now is how do I reinstall Vista on a PC that has no DVD rom
to read my Vista DVD.
OK I could swap my DVD around for a few hours by its covered in
warranty void stickers and as its new I don't want to risk anything.
Is there anyway to convert a Bootable DVD into a Bootable USB drive?
I've got a 4 Gig stick which should be fine. My motherboard also
boots from USB.
I've managed to make a copy of the vista DVD into ISO image but can't
find a program that will put the ISO onto a USB drive.
Any ideas. Seems a simple enough idea and veyr handy considering the
low price of sticks.

HOW LONG?! Copying files.
I just migrated from Windows XP Pro to Vista Ultimate (64bit). So far
things have run *fairly* smoothly, but I am astonished at the length of time
it is taking for me to copy files.
For instance I want to copy 1/2 dozen folders from my "D" partition to my
"C" partition (drag & drop using Windows Explorer - both partitions are
NTFS, and I get the same result copying files on the same partition too).
These files existed on my previous XP install, and when I copied them from D
to C on XP it took around 2 minutes or so. Now the exact same files are
taking upwards of 25+ minutes to copy in Vista!
Is there some reason why Vista is acting like a decrepit 90 year old? :-)

Need codecs
This may be OT - if so sorry.
In my playing with Vista Ultimate, I have encountered a problem trying
to play some avi and mov files, using WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER CLASSIC
(mplayerc.exe).
I keep getting an error window, saying I probably need certain codecs
that I do not have installed. Is there an easy way to determine
exactly what codecs are needed? That is, is there a utility that will
diagnose that information so that I can then seek it or them on the
web? I have tried downloading a few so-called 'codec packs', but
apparently none have had the needed codec(s), and the problem
persists.
