    - replacing vista Vista came w/laptop. I want xp instead. I tried installing xp over vista (no luck). I reformatted and xp said a newer version was already loaded and wouldnt continue.     - Chess Titans doesn't work anymore, after computer locked up I was playing a game of Chess Titans, and while playing it, I opened up an IE window to access the internet. I couldn't connect to the internet - I had been able to connect a few minutes earlier, but the usb wireless adapter I'm using is a little flaky. Then I couldn't close the browser at all, and CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't do anything. Vista just froze, it wasn't a BSOD, it just froze. I waited several minutes, while trying CTRL-ALT-DEL, ALT-TAB, CTRL-ESC, unplugging and reconnecting the usb wireless adapter and the usb keyboard. Vista never responded. I had to hold down the power button on the computer for several seconds to turn it off. Then I turned it back on, and I ran a "chkdsk", and it said "Windows has checked the file system and found no problems." But when I try to run Chess Titans, nothing happens.     - Delete a partition to recover space to drive C: Situation Drive C: (NTFS) 5GB free space contains OS, program files, program data, some users application data Drive D: (NTFS) 8GB free space contains Users, Contacts, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Links, Music, Pictures, Saved Games, Searches, Videos, program files (miscellaneous utility types of programs that are easily recoverable), maildata (.pst archives, personal folders), MSOCache Objective Increase free space on drive C: by merging and completely deleting drive D Options A) Move all data from drive D to an external drive F, change Outlook files to C drive, modify settings for location of D:\Users\* to C: \Users\* in Vista Use Vista Computer Management, Disk Management to delete volume D: and then extend volume C. It isn't clear that deleting volume D would allow the now unallocated space to be extended to volume C. It looks like one might be stuck without being able to add the space to volume C and that the unallocated space could only be used to create new partitions. Is this correct? It is definitely not what I want. B) Use Symantec's PartitionMagic, Acronis Disk Manager, or Paragaon Partition Manager. Any comments about any of these products? After using these products will I have a single partition as desired? Will I find myself forever married to the product until I scrap the hard drive or the system? C) Bite the bullet. Copy contents of D: to F:. Remove the partitions format the drive, reinstall Vista and all programs building a new install from scratch and then recover data only from external drive F to new drive C. Any suggestions? Option A would be preferred, except that I don't think it will work. When it comes to option B, I would spend the $40 to $70 bucks if I knew that a) it would not leave me with a virtual drive manageable only with the software, b) it would facilitate the software configuration and make the move painless. My fear is that in the end I would be sacrificing some portion of my drive to PartionMagic (or whichever) and still have to manually configure MSOCache, maildata, etc as well as do some app reinstalls.     - Word 97-2003 merge docs on Vista Since transitioning to Vista a couple of weeks ago, and old Word 97-2003 merge documents will only open as read only. The main document will open normally, and I can make and save changes. But the data source file in Word will not accept any changes. When I go to exit and save my updates to my data source I keep getting the response it is a read only. I've already checked the properties and attributes, and all are set where they should be.     - Drivers, Vista and 0x8007000d help please! Help! We can't get Windows Vista to recognize a Creative Zen Touch. The PC already has latest Windows Media Player 11 update. 1) After plugging the unit it, it says drivers need to be installed. After picking the options to let Window Vista pick a driver, it redirects to a Windows Page. That page tries to install KB940199. (attempts to use the supplied Creative drivers didn't work). 2) KB940199 wants to install an msu file. When executing that, it creates a popup with error 0x8007000d "Installer encountered an error". There doesn't seem to be a way around that, but it's not a good sign that installing a KB is causing an error with no decription. 3) Searching the web suggests that this is related to an activation error. We tried reactiving on the phone, but that didn't work. The automated version would not supply a new key. When connected to a human (on a noisy connection!), the person concluded that Vista was already activated and that we need to go to their support line (which he didn't mention is not working on Saturday!). Anyways, does anyone have any ideas? Is the 0x8007000d error a sign that there's a Vista activation problem, or is this a bogus error that should be disregarded? (and the *real* issue is tracking down Vista drivers for the Creative somewhere else)?? Why should it be so hard to get an mp3 player to work on Vista? It worked fine on XP? Thanks... Before I launch into my main topic, I want to make a few matters crystal-clear: (1) Failure to recognize this salient point will result in Adam's getting free reign to enshrine irrational fears and fancies as truth, and (2) as a result of that, my observations are perhaps unique. Now that you know where I stand on those issues, I can safely say that wily cutthroats like Adam are not born -- they are excreted. However unsavory that metaphor may be, Adam acts as if he were King of the World. This hauteur is astonishing, staggering, and mind-boggling. He truly believes that he defends the real needs of the working class. It is just such counter-productive megalomania, muddleheaded egoism, and intellectual aberrancy that stirs Adam to carve out space in the mainstream for ungrateful politics. I want to draw two important conclusions from this. The first is that Adam and his gofers are wolves in sheep's clothing who will create profound emotional distress for people on both sides of the issue eventually, and the second is that the justification he gave for seeking to judge people by the color of their skin while ignoring the content of their character was one of the most addlepated justifications I've ever heard. Even without hearing the details you can still see my point quite clearly: Adam keeps telling everyone within earshot that honesty and responsibility have no cash value and are therefore worthless. I'm guessing that Adam read that on some Web site of dubious validity. More reliable sources generally indicate that he isn't as smart as he thinks he is. As an interesting experiment, try to point this out to Adam. (You might want to don safety equipment first.) I think you'll find that if he had even a shred of intellectual integrity, he'd admit that he has no evidence or examples to back up his point. Still, I recommend you check out some of his commentaries and draw your own conclusions on the matter. Adam teaches workshops on clericalism. Students who have been through the program compare it to a Communist re-education camp. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Of course, if Adam had learned anything from history, he'd know that I challenge him to point out any text in this letter that proposes that we ought to worship feckless mountebanks as folk heroes. It isn't there. There's neither a hint nor a suggestion of such a thing. But there's the rub; his idea of mutinous autism is no political belief. It is a fierce and burning gospel of hatred and intolerance, of murder and destruction, and the unloosing of an irascible blood-lust. It is, in every sense, a doctrinaire and pagan religion that incites its worshipers to an infernal frenzy and then prompts them to precipitate riots. Adam does not merely undermine the current world order. He does so consciously, deliberately, willfully, and methodically. His undertakings were never about tolerance and equality. That was just window dressing for the "innocents". Rather, someone has been giving Adam's brain a very thorough washing, and now Adam is trying to do the same to us. Several things he has said have brought me to the boiling point. The statement of his that made the strongest impression on me, however, was something to the effect of how he is a refined gentleman with the soundest education and morals you can imagine. Forgive me for boring you with all the gory details, but Adam's hypocrisy is transparent. Even the least discerning among us can see right through it. It's easy to tell if Adam's lying. If his lips are moving, he's lying. Although Adam demonstrates a great deal of ignorance and presumption when he says that he commands an army of robots that live in the hollow center of the earth and produce earthquakes whenever they feel like shaking things up a bit on the surface, the fact remains that in order to convince us that he has the authority to issue licenses for practicing heathenism, Adam often turns to the old propagandist trick of comparing results brought about by entirely dissimilar causes.     - Folders in Outlook Express Disappearing A year ago I set up sub folders under "Local Folders" in Windows Mail. Everytime I opened my email the sub folders would be displayed under "Local Folders." Now the only folder displayed is "Local Folders." However, when I double click on "Local Folders" a box opens to the right which reflects all the sub folders in the "Local Folders" and my emails are there. When I double click on a sub folder, it then shows up in the left hand box under "Local Folders." When I close Windows Mail and open again, the sub folders once again are not displayed. I have to go through the process again of clicking on each folder to display it under "Local Folders." Has anyone experienced this problem and found a solution to resolving? Anything that has to do with networking seems to make my computer freeze up. I can start up in Safe Mode but not Safe Mode with Networking. And when I waited the 40 minutes start my comp up, the Vista said the the "Network cable is unplugged", but it wasn't.     - White screen Hello all. I'm new here, all the way from Iceland so my english is maybe not so good. I've had a problem with my computer but it's showing white screen. I maybe turn it on and a few minutes later it's completely white. Sometimes it showes first stripes, black and white. I've googled it but not found much so I went here to ask. For about 2 months ago I had problem with BSOD but re-installed Vista and it was OK. My computer is Packard Bell SB87 (something like that, not sure) and with Vista Home Premium.     - DVD Region Free Application For Vista Although this post may not seem to be about Vista, I think it is pertinent for some people such those in my position who have moved to Vista from XP. As my time has been didvided between UK and USA I have purchased over the last few years a fair number of DVD videos, some in PAL color - Region 2, and some in NTSC color - Region 1. Absurdly, laptops will permit you to change from Region 1 to Region 2 and back again a total of four times only. The reasons given by the creators of movies and the DVD manufacturers may be good for them, but not for those who believe that such restrictions are unconstitutional at the widest, and just annoying for those who have bought a product in one country and want to play it on a laptop (which travels with one) in another country. When I used machines running Windows XP, it was easy. A company in Hongkong released a program called DVD Region Free and CSS (or something like that). You could download it on to your machine and it freed up things so that any DVD would play without restriction. Unfortunately they have never thought fit to develop a program that works on Vista. So using the well-beloved Google, I put in all sorts of criteria and found a number of promising applications that didn't work when downloaded. (HINT: always create a restore point first!). Then I found a program that works. It is called Any DVD, and you can Google it for yourself. It comes from www.SlySoft.com/ I downloaded the 21-day free trial which worked so well that 21 MINUTES later (or thereabouts) I was ready to pay for the license key. I don't understand the prnciple on which it works but it's promotional material doesn't say anything about any particular version of Windows, so I think it's operational methods go a bit deeper. Please believe that I don't work for the company! I just believe in passing on useful information when it comes up. Okay: it cost me 49 Euros (no local tax added) but for anyone with a fair number of multi-regional DVDs, I find it's a bargain. And free for the first 21 days if you want to test it out.     - problem repairing vista during dual boot xp/vista installation Hello. I'm attempting to install xp on a computer that originally only had vista installed to achieve a dual boot installation where I can choose between xp and vista. I'm using the following online guide: http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystep_guide.htm The first steps go fine, I can shrink the vista partition (although I use gparted instead of the shrink command in diskpart) to make free space for an xp partition on the same drive. I've made 50 gb available for xp, which leaves 90 gb for vista. Subsequently I've installed xp on the new partition and that goes according to plan. However, when I use the original vista dvd to repair the vista installation, to ensure the computer boots in vista again (because after I've installed xp, the computer reboots in xp), I can't repair the vista installation. I can select the vista installation to repair it (start up repair), but it reports no existing problems. However when I reboot, I still end up in xp. Does anyone know how to manually ensure the computer boots again from my original vista installation? So I can resume the guide by installing EasyBCD to ensure I get a menu when I reboot where I can choose between the xp and vista installation.     - Windows Vista x64 searches 5 times longer than Windows XP! Hello! Why does Windows Vista x64 search so long, especially when the progress in the bar is at the end and the ring is rolling (a replacement for the sand glass)? When a search is not "nearly instantaneous" it takes nearly forever. That is, when you ask for an Advanced Search of Computer, the bar first goes half-way across fairly quickly. Then it goes more slowly to about 3/4 of the way, appearing to redraw the bar every second or so, then more slowly still to 7/8, etc., getting closer to the end with each redraw - but never quite reaching the end. I watch hopefully as it gets to the little down-pointing triangle, thinking that it will give up when it gets there and report that it can't find what it's searching for. But it doesn't. It keeps creeping further, past the vertical separator at the end of the Address Bar, and then at a maddeningly slow pace across the red "X" and... hours later, the green bar is still being redrawn and it STILL hasn't got to the end.     - Corrupted video system I left my computer running during the night and noted that the following morning there were a few flashing horizontal lines next to the mouse pointer (something like TV scan lines) which followed the mouse pointer as the pointer moved. Also discovered that all my video players (Media Player, Real Player, Nero) now show corrupted videos (screen is covered by multiple horiziontal flickering lines of varying colour and thickness) and the colours are bleeding through while playing spider solitaire (from underlying layer to top card). No new software was installed during the time the computerwas operating. and I resolved the mouse pointer issue by changing the pointer to a black one. Any help to fix it. Am running Vista Home Premium SP1 with a ATI AGP Radeon 9700 pro with the 7-4 driver (cannot not use later drivers because they will not install (infamous Code 43 error) and IE 8 beta. In an attempt to remedy the problem I have done the following: changed my mouse from a P/S2 to a USB complete virus, adware, etc scan complete uninstall and re-install of the ATI driver and software. and All works well when I operate the computer in safe mode or when I uninstalled the ATI driver and use the basic VGA driver. I have also note that during the boot-up process the VGA screen appears corrupted but clears up when windows starts. How do I create and add an Autocorrect (AC) Command Button to an Excel Toolbar??? NOW the Complaints: I HATE the ribbons, period? I LOVED the nice, neat, useful, and tiny toolbars I created and edited in the 2003 programs and this 'RIBBON' thing is the most obnoxious thing ever !! I REALLY fell bad for those laptop dudes and dudettes, especially the 15" (or smaller) screens. I have a nice, new, big 19" and I find the useless and extravagant space requirements for the "Ribbon" (who came up with that one, anyway?) EXTREMELY ANNOYING. I used to have three to six shortened, "CUSTOMER"-ized toolbars arranged in 2 to 3 rows and made up of the commands I NEED and/or WANTED and they used up the same or less space than this stupid Ribbon!!! OH, and that's another thing, I could center them for easy access!!! When created a Macro and placed it in a toolbar a generic icon would be displayed but I could, and did, copy, paste, edit them so I could tell at a glance what command was being represented!!! I didn't care for many of the icons in the 2003 Word and Excel and I could EASILY edit them to my liking - as in something that made sense. I could and did, create different toolbars that I could easily customize, open or close depending on the type af task I was performing, and I REALLY don't like many of the Microsoft default buttons. I created numerous Macros that I added to the toolbar(s) because there were no commands available for certain tasks I wanted to shortcut. NOW, HA, I'm stuck with what Microsoft thinks I need, with what Microsoft thinks we ALL need. AS you can tell, I'm PO'd about this. I have spent more hours trying to figure a way to get what I want than it did to edit a create my old toolbars and the more hours I spend researching and trying to figure it out the more frustrating that time is and the more it takes away from creating and editing!!! HELL, why do you thing I am posting this at 5.00 AM - I can't justify spending any more time on it at work or taking time away from my family so here I am!! I started researching this AGAIN around midnight and now, another 5 hours burned up with ZILCHO TO SHOW FOR IT!! I am not at all impressed with VISTA, period, never mind the inability to CUSTOMerIZE the program toolbars I use EVERY day. It is about the customer, isn't it? My experience so far is that 2007 programs and VISTA are not an upgrade - they're more like a DOWNGRADE. OH, and I would go back to the 2003 programs but, for some odd reason, one can't very easily find a new computer with just plain old windows. Anyway, enough of the wine - I need some cheese. And any help - NO, specific answers that a non-tech like me cn understand - would be appreciated, very much!!! ps: Man, I never write stuff like this, sorry! I am just so ticked off, so frustrated with the blocks at every turn to set up and customize efficiency into my new HP laptop I just can't seem to help myself. Ive been trying to update using the automatic updateing and manualy, also had discussions with IT people and other technical support going through my computer to see if they could fix the problem of why it will not download. When I connect the laptop to an external beamer, it all works fine and properly detects the device and adjusts the resolution but after around 10min of operation (using powerpoint) it just changed the resolution to something else (lowers the resolution, so that only around 70% of the slide was visible) without me having done something.     - Publisher 2007 Fill Effects I used to have Publisher 2000 on my old computer. I've since upgraded to Vista and Publisher 2007, and all-in-all the new version is superior. However, I just went to do a fill effect for the background of a picture in my document, and I discovered much to my disappointment that many of the fill effect patterns from Publisher 2000 that were kind of cool seem to be gone. I'm referring to the simple fade-in / fade-out type patterns where you can select multiple colors to blend into one another following a pre-set geometric shape. Publisher 2000 used to have many more shapes than I have now - there used to be a variety of spirals, stars, arrows, and so forth to choose from. Now there are only some basic variations on horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and "from center". I want to know if there is any way to install just those fill effect patterns from either my old Publisher 2000 CD or from some other source so that I once again have access to them; or is it possible to have both versions of Publisher installed and functional at the same time on my computer?
