how to use touchpad to enter chinese characters?
Hi Folks,
I am using vista home premium on a laptop with a touchpad. I am trying to
find a way to use the touchpad to enter chinese characters (or any language
in fact) via the handwriting recognition feature described in
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/vista/Whats_New_Vista.mspx#EDLAC.
If anyone can tell me how to set this up, I would much appreciate. I have
essentially zero knowledge in all this - in fact I don't even know how to use
the keyboard to enter chinese - so if you can describe from scratch, that
would be great. Thanks a lot. Tag: signing in Tag: 374650
Computer running SOOOO SLOW
Hi,
i've been running my computer pretty much without problems. Recently I have
noticed a real slow down in performance. I currently have Spybot S&D, and
the purchased version of AVG installed. Thinking that perhaps one of these
programs may be causing some kind of problem, I disabled both of them, but
to no avail.
I run spyware searches and virus searches daily, which never really show up
any thing of concern. I delete cookies etc on a daily basis too. My
computer doesnt need defragged.
Could anyone give me any ideas as to what could be slowing it down so much.
I tried to access my company site to process some work stuff and it took
forever and a day to load what would normally be a couple of seconds.
My computer is only about 8 months old, Intel Core Duo CPU, Memory 2047MB,
32 Bit O.S, with a Windows experience Index rating of 5.5.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated, P.S, running Vista Professional.

The other side
You never seem to read anything good about Microsoft, so here goes. I have 2
computers. 1 is a new one with vista home premium. The other is old with xp.
I have only been fooling with computers for a year since I retired. I have
gotten all the updates and sps that are out. I have had no major problems
with either system. I just thought we should hear something once in a while.

More than you wanted to know about the idiot Frank
Yes, Frank is everyone's favorite fool. Frank is actually very easy to
figure out. He's just some insecure self-loathing nobody that craves
attention. Good or bad Frank doesn't care as long as he's noticed. He
has delusions of grandeur often trying to project himself as good
looking, wealthy and clever. He pretends to run a business some days,
claims multiple businesses other days. For some odd reason Frank
thinks you want to share in his hallucinations which he repeats
constantly. Frank is also proud of several strange sexual perversions
having an unhealthy obsession with sheep and other barnyard animals.
Frank spends a disproportional amount of his days, nights, weekends,
holidays goofing off in this newsgroup because he is what most would
imagine a loser to be having little if any social interaction with
others. His life revolves around this newsgroup. Without it Frank
would probably fall into a deep depression and likely hurt himself or
torture small fury animals. Frank mostly is harmless. A total doofus
and Putz. While Frank snarls, growls and loves to bluster. he's
actually very insecure and timid.
Frank's real problem began long ago when he developed a Don Quixote
complex where he takes up causes fighting imaginary enemies much as
the wannabe knight did in the 1604 novel titled "The Ingenious Knight
of La Mancha" where the main character of the story would chase after
windmills, fancy them being giants and say he was off to slay them for
the good of the community and of course to receive lavish praise for
his efforts. Frank plays that role in this newsgroup by always coming
to the defense of Microsoft and MVPs and is actually dumb enough to
think they appreciate his constant blustering on their behalf. Of
course most everyone sees Frank as just a troublemaker, lout, blowhard
and Microsoft apologist.
Frank automatically attacks anyone if they mention problems with
Vista. Frank thinks it is his job to spread lies and insults and will
try to chase anyone out of this group if they don't worship Microsoft
like Frank does. Frank has the silly notion that this newsgroup should
serve as a fan club for Microsoft. If you don't cheer, Frank is on the
case and will try to insult you or tell you to leave. Frank fancies
himself chief hall monitor. The reality is Frank is a Net Nazi and
tries to impose his own half-ass rules of what are and aren't proper
topics to be discussed.
Frank being dimwitted has a small bag of taunts he repeatedly uses
over and over. Original thought is totally foreign to this imbecile.
If someone slams Frank with a crafty insult bet the farm Frank will
steal it word for word and claim it has his own a couple days later.
Frank's favorite lie is pretending anyone experiencing problems with
Vista hasn't installed it correctly. Frank totally ignores all the
admissions Microsoft itself has made about the shortcoming of Vista.
Frank doesn't want to hear about that.
Frank will depending on his memory say he has anywhere between 9 and
17 computers running Vista for his company (companies). Rarely does a
week go by that this number of mythical machines gets changed. You
can't blame Frank for that, he just don't remember his last lie often
ending up with his foot stuck in his mouth.
Frank has told us he has sold his business, is selling his business,
will sell his business, runs his business, isn't involved with running
his business. He's retried, will retire, is semi-retired, he enjoys
working and isn't planning on retiring. Take your pick. Again, Frank
just don't remember what his lie was the last time.
Ask Frank what the name of this "business" is and Frank clams up. I
don't have add why. Frank is such a phony but in Frank's fantasy world
he sees himself as clever.
Next most popular tactic is Frank resorting to calling people liars,
drunks, accusing them of odd sexual behavior (Frank is obsessed with
sheep) and his frequent use of Cap'n Crunch, a silly cartoon character
used by Quaker Oats to promote one of their cereals. Again this is
revealing of Frank's true nature since the commercials run on Saturday
mornings and are designed for children under ten. Far below the mental
age of Frank who's mental age is closer to six or seven.
The reality about Frank is this goofball is a complete idiot which he
is more than willing to confirm over and over again. He constantly
gets caught in his web of lies, he often accuses others for
shortcomings he exhibits himself.
Frank is really nothing special. Most popular newsgroups have one or
more of their own screw-ups that like Frank spend their time
daydreaming and in general being an obnoxious pest. They crave the
attention. That is why they do it.
You can get a truer understanding of what Frank is all about by just
flipping his comments about himself 180 degrees. Frank claims he's
handsome, so he's probably one ugly SOB. Frank claims he's rich, so he
likely don't have a pot to piss in. Frank says he has property all
over France. Likely he's never left the country. Frank above all else
is a fraud. A raving phony. Nothing more than a loud, always boastful
loser looking for attention to fill his hours while he waits for the
Grim Reaper to end his misery.
Sure, it is probably best to just ignore morons like Frank, but it is
also fun to wind up him and get him sputtering and spinning around
like a top which is way too easy to accomplish because Frank is
several cuts below your average troll, knows next to nothing about the
topics he badly fakes being expert at and because of it is
entertaining in his own sick way. Rarely will you find anyone making a
bigger ass of themselves day after day. That job Frank excels at. Tag: signing in Tag: 374620
Make a Program run @ startup
*How do I make any program start automatically when the computer is
powered up and Vista is loaded?* There is a program that my computer
came with that always started up automatically, but for a while I didn't
want it, so I went in to the msconfig utility and chose not to have it
run on startup.
Now I want it back, and -I reselected it in msconfig, but it won't
start automatically now. I had to make a shortcut on the desktop and
manually run it.

How do I make a program run on startup?

Win 98 Backup on Vista?
I have 4 PC's running Win XP and use Windows 98 Backup to transfer files and
keep things in sync. One of the computers is at a remote location during
the summer so I can't use a network to transfer files. All computers have
identical file structures and I've found that using Win 98 backup works
great since it allows data compression and I simply have to make a backup,
transfer the .qic file to a CD and then do a restore. The XP backup
software does not allow data compression unless you are backing up to a tape
drive.
To get Win 98 backup to work on XP I carefully transfer the appropriate
files that are used by Win 98 backup to the c:\windows\system32 directory
and, most importantly, I set program compatibility for Windows 98.
I am faced with replacing my old laptop with a new one and it seems that it
will be difficult to buy one with Win XP. So my question is: Is it
possible that Windows 98 backup will work on a Vista machine? Does Vista
have program compatibility mode that can be set like XP has? Tag: signing in Tag: 374598
Any way to avoid formatting HD and reinstalling Win Vista?
I have a Vista Premium PC where I installed a trial version of a program,
let it expire and now I bought the full version but cannot seem to get it to
install since the ghost of the old trial version seems to be haunting my PC.
Before I start formatting the drive (and lose all my other programs and
settings) and attempt to reinstall Vista, I was wondering whether there was
some easy way to wipe all traces of the trial program? I am no great tech
expert, so protracted brain surgery with registry settings may not be an
option for me! Tag: signing in Tag: 374586

hi,
I have been transferring photos from my camera with no problems ever
since I purchased my camera about a year ago..
but now when I connect the camera I think it connects something in the
background every time I connect the camera.. and the computer not only
slows down to a crawl, it becomes practically unusable.. the mouse
"freezes", it doesn't respond, it does jerky movements.. I can tell
something's running in the background, but I can't tell what.. as soon
as I disconnect the camera it's ok again..
now I just got this notification (screenshot):

why would the computer now install this (whatever this is) EVERY TIME I
connect the camera? (the SAME camera.. I only have one..)

Vista/Norton/Windows One Care
Howdy Y'all !
My eight year old Dell finally bit the dust and bought a new Gateway
preloaded with Norton AV.
I have a paid subscription through 01/09 with Windows One Care that I have
used for three years with my Dell and never had problems with it.
I have always disliked the hoggy Norton and McAfee AV's and will uninstall
Norton on the new pc using the uninstall download from Symantec and probably
some manual removal as well.
My question is : will WOC work with Vista ?? Or should I use some of the
free AV's ie Avast, AVG free, etc etc.
My pc is only two days old and I don't want to spend days attempting to
download new programs and fight with firewalls :) and potentially messing up
new pc :)

SMM Rootkits in the BIOS -- SCARY!
Check this article out and then read the second one for a better
explanation:

http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/5922075-description.html
"Back in the late 90's we used to have a lot of machines come into the
computer store I was working in with viruses that had been written into the
machine's Bios. Then manufacturers started protecting the bios, which helped
a lot. But this latest rootkit written to the bios type attack will be much
more vicious. it appears that the manufacturers once again will need to step
in to protect their Bios from such hanky panky. In fact, these type of
rootkits would also affect Linux machines, as they are installed into the
bios while you are being hacked. But it is far more likely that the majority
of infected computers will be windows machines because they are easier to
hack. In the next few months I expect Bios manufacturers to come up with
answers in the form of important Bios updates that will really need to be
installed to get around the hackers."

Trying to install program - Administrator issues
Hi,
I have read through some previous threads, but there wasn't anything there
that I was looking for.
I am trying to install Client Service Installer.msi and it is a Windows
Installer Package. I get the message that 'The administrator has set
policies to prevent this installation'. Now I had this with another program
and I was able to run it as administrator, but this time in the drop down
menu there is no 'run as'.
Is there a way that I can install this program. I am the only user and am
set as the 'computer administrator'. I am also using Windows Vista Home
Premium OS.
Thanks in advance,

Open word document with Vista FTP
I have a XP ftp server running ServU ftp server version 6.
All clients connect to it via the lan: ftp://server or internet
ftp://outsidetoserver.
Users can browse the folders set up in ServU, and XP users even with
IE7 can open a word document for example.
However Vista users cannot. They get as far as seeing the word
document then when they double-click to open it repeatedly asks for
username and password. Even if I type the ServU administrator or the
administrator of the box username and password it just does the same.
I have tried lowering the security settings of IE7, upgrading ServU to
version 7 and nothing seems to work. There's nothing in event logs
either.
A fix is greatly appreciated

Windows Speech Recognition (WSR) Startup Fixed !!??
Quick summary: WSR did not start on Startup as it was set to do. It
could not be started manually either, except occasionally after the
computer had been running for several hours. If I turned UAC off it
started every time at boot and if closed would restart manually. I
created: Microsoft incident SRX1065964782. After a couple days I got a
response from MS: Try Clean Boot. If that doesn't work, zip up a bunch
of logs and send them. It didn't work. I zipped up the logs but the MS
server wouldn't accept some because they were too large. Emailed the MS
person asking what to do to get them through. No response.
After four days with no response, I removed my Logitech headset and
decided I was quit with WSR. I had some time on my hands so I decided to
optimize the services starting on my computer using the information at
http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/service411.htm.
I received a response from the MS person this morning. The person did
not address the issue of the too big logs. Instead, I read: Uninstall
anti-virus and firewall because engines are still running even at Clean
Boot. Well, I knew that was wrong because I had been looking at those
services after Clean Boot and the anti-virus engine and its task
scheduler were not running. The firewall was the MS firewall that is
part of Vista. So, if that were the problem then there should have been
lots more than two people reporting trouble. MS response continued if
the problem doesn't go away try creating a new user profile.
Well, okay, I thought, I'll try creating a new user profile, but before
I did that I reconnected my headset and waited while Vista found and
installed the software. When it was done, WSR started! I stopped it and
started it again. I did a warm boot. It started automatically. I
scratched my head. I did not create a new user profile. I cold-booted
the system to see if it would continue to start. It did.
I'm not sure what corrected the problem. Because of the time lag with MS
Support, I had given up on fixing the issue and made several changes to
the system before getting an unhelpful response.
Perhaps this will help someone else. Tag: signing in Tag: 374534

Vista Home to Office/Ultimate
Hello, Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade from Vista Home
Premium to Vista Office or Ultimate?
I have just upgraded from XP to Vista Home, that was included with my
Dell package I purchased late in 2006, and I need the fax facility
that MS has decided not to include with Home Premium. Tag: signing in Tag: 374463
restore a file backup after restoring from a PC backup image
I have taken a backup image and am doing regular file backups. These are
stored on an external hard disk. All I want is to find a reference that tells
me the steps to follow after the loss of my internal hard drive? i.e. How do
I tell vista to restore from the PC image? Do I then restore from the latest
back file? Is this all I need to do? etc.
I have searched windows help with no luck. Tag: signing in Tag: 374460
Has my computer got Vista SP1?
Sorry for the dumb question. I bought my computer a few weeks ago and I can't
find the information anywhere. It just says I'm running Home Premium but
doesn't mention if it has SP1 or not. Windows updates haven't said it needs
downloading so does this mean it already has SP1? Is there a way to find out? Tag: signing in Tag: 374458
read only files
i hav a new asus lappy with the main hd drive partitioned in 2 plus recovery
section (as it comes), and 2 external usb hdd in enclosures. am running vista
ultimate, i am the administrator of the system, only user, no guest accounts.
UAC is off.
now my problem is that ALL the drives have turned them selves into "ready
only" and i cannot delete any folders, files or stuff. click on a folder an
check properties, "read only" highlighted.
uncheck it, it comes up with a box asking if i want to change this option,
click yes, goes off, comes back saying i need admin rights to do this. but i
am the admin of the system
as far as i know i havent changed anything.
any thoughts???
thanks in advance Tag: signing in Tag: 374455
'All programs' list gone from Start Menu
When I click on the 'All Programs' arrow at the bottom of the Start Menu, I
don't get a full list of programs any more, most of the shortcuts have
disappeared (things like Windows Update, DVD Maker, and several others have
all gone). Programs I install myself that create folders on the Start menu
are all still there.
How can I get these back? Tag: signing in Tag: 374454
cannot save
About a month ago I started to not be able to save, or save as,
documents or webpages. A dialog box opens that says: save as not
responding.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Vista Sidebar (Gadgets) - Gone missing!
Hi guys,
I've done nothing to my system (no new progs) but this morning the sidebar
is missing.
I've not installed SP1 yet either.
I did a Google search and tried the following fix but it did NOT work for
me:
***************************
Click Start, type regedit.exe and press ENTER
Navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones
Make sure that the value data for "1400" is set to 0 (dword:00000000)
Close Regedit.exe
that worked for me, but there is also another solution that could work for
you, this didnt work in me:
Open cmd prompt with admin privileges
type
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
***************************
Anybody else have a solution please?

Transfering Vista Licence?
I bought a laptop with XP MCE and later bought a Vista upgrade. The laptop
has died (only 16 months old!) and wont be repaired. Can I transfer the
Vista OS and licence to my home computer? Any help would be appreciated! Tag: signing in Tag: 374439
Vista - 9 GIG
Out of interest I took a look at how big my Vista Home Premium directory
was ...
NINE GIG!
The biggest my 95, 98 and XP were was around one gig, from memory.
I guess it's not a major issue now considering how big hard drives are,
but it was still a big shock to me. Tag: signing in Tag: 374434
Windows Mail the ONLY default newsreader c\alled by Outlook
Vista Home Premium SP1, Outlook 2007.
The Go-News menu function in Outlook 2007 on Vista Home Premium SP1 will NOT
call any other newsreader other than Windows Mail, even when the other news
reader is set as default.(Ie it opens when external news links are
clicked...)
This is in direct contradiction to Outlook 2007 on XP.
Does anyone know of a registry hack to allow O2007 to call something other
than Windows Mail? Tag: signing in Tag: 374429
48+ days Uptime - Vista SP1 has been good to me
I rebooted my little laptop for the first time since upgrading to SP1 on
03/21/08.
Uptime as almost 49 days, and the machine was running as well as when I
first rebooted after installing SP1.
If you want to take a look at some pretty impressive (IMHO) numbers for a
home notebook:

transfering files from XP-HD to Vista-HD
I have recently had to replace my computer due to a motherboard failure.
I have the old Hard Disks from my XP (Pro) system installed inside my Vista
(Ultimate) Box.
When I try to use files from the old system I come up with access errors
- the files 'belong' to an unrecognised user (S-1-5-21-etc).
I'm trying to recover 'old' documents and Application Archives (zipped
installation
files) - the archives were purchased online and downloaded, I have no other
way
to retrieve them.
the 'new' box has a working DVD-drive and I have a couple of DVD-RWs available
(if that is the only method I can use) Tag: signing in Tag: 374423

drive. Help is appreciated. Thanks. Tag: signing in Tag: 374410
Chess Titans doesn't work anymore, after computer locked up
I was playing a game of Chess Titans, and while playing it, I opened
up an IE window to access the internet. I couldn't connect to the
internet - I had been able to connect a few minutes earlier, but the
usb wireless adapter I'm using is a little flaky. Then I couldn't
close the browser at all, and CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't do anything. Vista
just froze, it wasn't a BSOD, it just froze. I waited several
minutes, while trying CTRL-ALT-DEL, ALT-TAB, CTRL-ESC, unplugging and
reconnecting the usb wireless adapter and the usb keyboard. Vista
never responded. I had to hold down the power button on the computer
for several seconds to turn it off. Then I turned it back on, and I
ran a "chkdsk", and it said "Windows has checked the file system and
found no problems." But when I try to run Chess Titans, nothing
happens. Absolutely nothing happens - no errors, and chess.exe does
not appear in the Task Manager at all. What's going on here? Tag: signing in Tag: 374408
Problem with sleep & hibernate
Why is programming a computer so that sleep and hibernate works like
they should so difficult. Every time my Vista Home Premium system
takes a long nap it refuses to wake up. Had the same problems with
other MS operating systems.
Surely by now MS could have fixed this problem. Tag: signing in Tag: 374407
