 - unexpected bluescreen Computer freezes while i'm in the middle of something, the mouse pointer will get "stuck" for 3-4 seconds, then the screen goes black (but the power is still on). I get no message, and nothing works except for holding down the power button to turn off the pc. When I restart there is no record of any problem in the problem history.  - Laptop won't shut down... Vista Business, T7700, 4GB Avast/Defender/Spybot sez "clean" Recently had BSOD problem due to driver conflict, detected and fixed using Verifier. This morning, shutdown wouldn't. After 20 minutes I did the hard thing, then restarted, stabilized, and tried again. After another 25 minutes - the same. There's nothing new since yesterday, and no error codes, nothing suspicious. I do need to shut down this laptop from time to time, so help will be welcome.  - Card reader problems after installing Windows Vista I recently installed windows vista premium onto my Sony VAIO computer that has a card readers for all the different types of storage media.  - Windows Vista Ultimate Backup does not work When I first installed MS Vista Ultimate 64 bit I did a full backup using the imbedded backup and restore center. After that I made two subsequent backups. I experienced a severe problem with the operating system that could not be diagnosed so I decided to try a restore point first. After all restore points failed to solve the problem I decided to try a full restore using the imbedded backup and restore center (which by the way I keep backups on another SATA drive and that drive is used for no other purpose). When trying the newest made backup the system froze in the middle of the restore and said that it could not find a file. OK, so I went to the next oldest full backup. This was restored. However, after restoration Internet Explorer would not work and neither would the start menu. OK, so I boot the Vista Ultimate 64 bit DVD and tried to restore the last known oldest full backup. After this was done same problem. Internet Explorer would not open although the start menu would work. I would certainly like to know why I paid so much money for this version of Vista for accompanying imbedded software that does not work. Tag: I may post as FB or fb too Tag: 399273

Let me give you my experience from yesterday. I decided to download (Moviemaker) and buy the Digital Plus pack ... so I went to Microsoft.com. They have a download place so I went there. The first 5 times I used the site it timed out while trying to bring up the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I got it to come up. This site is so slow it is unusable. It wasn't in the top 5 so I expanded the other 45. These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C:\Documents and Settings\billg\My Documents\My Pictures seem clear. They are not filtered by the system ... and so many of the things are strange. I tried scoping to Media stuff. Still no moviemaker. I typed in movie. Nothing. I typed in movie maker. Nothing. So I gave up and sent mail to Amir saying - where is this Moviemaker download? Does it exist? So they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated. They told me to go to the main page search button and type movie maker (not moviemaker!). I tried that. The site was pathetically slow but after 6 seconds of waiting up it came. I thought for sure now I would see a button to just go do the download. In fact it is more like a puzzle that you get to solve. It told me to go to Windows Update and do a bunch of incantations. This struck me as completely odd. Why should I have to go somewhere else and do a scan to download moviemaker? So I went to Windows update. Windows Update decides I need to download a bunch of controls. (Not) just once but multiple times where I get to see weird dialog boxes. Doesn't Windows update know some key to talk to Windows? Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff. This is after I was told we were doing delta patches to things but instead just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg. So I did the download. That part was fast. Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn't use it for anything else during this time. What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy. This is after the download was finished. Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night ? why should I reboot at that time? So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it. Of course that meant completely getting rid of all my Outlook state. So I got back up and running and went to Windows Updale again. I forgot why I was in Windows Update at all since all I wanted was to get Moviemaker. So I went back to Microsoft.com and looked at the instructions. I have to click on a folder called WindowsXP. Why should I do that? Windows Update knows I am on Windows XP. What does it mean to have to click on that folder? So I get a bunch of confusing stuff but sure enough one of them is Moviemaker. So I do the download. The download is fast but the Install takes many minutes. Amazing how slow this thing is. At some point I get told I need to go get Windows Media Series 9 to download. So I decide I will go do that. This time I get dialogs saying things like "Open" or "Save". No guidance in the instructions which to do. I have no clue which to do. The download is fast and the install takes 7 minutes for this thing. So now I think I am going to have Moviemaker. I go to my add/remove programs place to make sure it is there. It is not there. What is there? The following garbage is there. Microsoft Autoupdate Exclusive test package, Microsoft Autoupdate Reboot test package, Microsoft Autoupdate testpackage1. Microsoft AUtoupdate testpackage2, Microsoft Autoupdate Test package3. Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up. But that is just the start of the crap. Later I have listed things like Windows XP Hotfix see Q329048 for more information. What is Q329048? Why are these series of patches listed here? Some of the patches just things like Q810655 instead of saying see Q329048 for more information. What an absolute mess. Moviemaker is just not there at all. So I give up on Moviemaker and decide to download the Digital Plus Package. I get told I need to go enter a bunch of information about myself. I enter it all in and because it decides I have mistyped something I have to try again. Of course it has cleared out most of what I typed. I try (typing) the right stuff in 5 times and it just keeps clearing things out for me to type them in again. So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven't run Moviemaker and I haven't got the plus package. The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11. (don't you just love that root certificate message?) When I really get to use the stuff I am sure I will have more feedback. When Seattle Pi recently asked Gates about the email, he replied, "There's not a day that I don't send a piece of e-mail ... like that piece of e-mail. That's my job."  - No "Windows sounds" in Vista I have a Hp dv9271ea computer. And yesterday suddenly there is no "windows sounds". There are also no sounds from intetentt. Sounds from other application will play.  - Dual booting with 32 bit after 64 bit Hi, I just purchased a machine with a 64 bit OEM. I have create another partition because I want to install 32 bit on there. However it is not working so I was wondering if there was something I am no doing right here. I want to use the 32 bit for internet access an itunes and the 64 bit for gaming I do not have any discs with the 64 bit OS on it either everything have here is 32 bit Is this possible?  - Some Icons dragged/copied to Vista desktop from another HDD invisi Hello I am just getting to grips with Vista but I also have XP on another HDD. Whilst copying over some files (to the desktop) and folders from the XP drive some of them do not show visibly on the Vista desktop after dragging or pasting. The copied files are there,and I can access the contents, as I can see them in the desktop folder but I cannot see how to make them visible on the actual desktop disply.  - Vista Repair Install In wanting to do a repair install (keeping existing programs etc), on running Recovery CD, I get the message............ "Upgrade has been disabled vand cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of windows that is more recent than the versiopn you are currently running" I'm running Vista Home Premium (fully updated) but suspecting that I may have a problem, I thought I could do a repair install but it seems all I can do is either a clean install and thus lose everything or upgrade to I assume Business or Ultimate Editions of Vista.  - Dell Inspiron Upgrade to Vista I have just upgraded a Dell Inspiron with XP home SP2 to Vista Business. It was working okay, but when coming out of hibernation, the screen would just go blue with white lines and shut down. I installed the latest ATI video driver from Dell and now, when it gets to the desktop, the same thing happens. I can only boot in Safe Mode.  - Blue Screen of DEATH Well, I guess you can't call it the Blue Screen of Death anymore as at least it collects data and reports the problem and boots back up (or does it?). I've had a total of 3 of these screens and am wondering how I can view what took place and possibly find out if there are any steps I can take to prevent the same thing from happening?  - Opening Widows Explorer Maximised. Over the last couple of days when I open my Internet Explorer Home Page it opens in a small page format instead of maximise size. I thought that it was supposed to open in the same size as it was the last time it was open. I always use this window maximised. The same thing happens with my Hotmail login page.  - Minor "switch user" problem Vista Home Premium 32, with all updates except SP1. Say I'm logged in as my account, and leave the PC and it goes into screen saver, which I have set to go back to he Log-in screen. Now my wife logs in with her account, does her work, and leaves the PC, and it goes into screen saver mode, which again goes back to the Log-in mode. Now I go back to the PC, and click "Switch User" and I go the screen with all the accounts, click on my account and re-enter p/w.. Sometimes, not all the time, when I do this, I momentarily get logged in, then immediately goes into the "Locking Computer" screen, and acts like it just went into screen saver mode, which I then have to re-enter my p/w.  - text size I bought a new monitor with a native 1680x1050 resolution. It's works great and I'd like to continue using this resolution. I've set IE's view\text size to "larger" and that works OK. However, some sites set their text size in a text/css in a stylesheet. These text are often too small to read well and there seems to be no way of making them larger. Is there anything I can do about this short of changing the screen resolution or getting reading glasses. If not, does anyone out there think there's a chance that the html site builders will wake up some day and realize that people are not reading their copy because it's too small on the screen?  - Can't open Hotmail msgs, "javascript;" @ lower left I have two login accounts on my Vista: one Administrative and one Standard user. The Standard user is for my sister. Recently (about 3 days ago) when I logged in to the Standard user account, I could sign on to Hotmail but I could not open any messages in Hotmail. There is a message showing "javascript;" at the lower left corner in the browser bar. I tried to uninstall Java and reinstalled the latest version on java.com. The problem remains. I also tried to delete the Standard user and recreated the account as I previously did a few months ago with a similar problem. This time it is not working. I also tried to right click and "open in new window" for some specific e-mail messages, nothing moved. The strange thing is if I use my Administrative account to access Hotmail, I could open the messages. Could someone please share your expertise and solutions on how to solve this problem?
