Hi,

I have Vista running in dual boot mode on a C2D 2.0ghz laptop (2 gigs
ram). I usually run in XP as it seems to be much faster. Are there
tweaks I can do to make Vista run with the same amount of get up & go?

Thanks,
Rich

Both Operating Systems On The Same Computer. Of Course XP Will Run Faster.
Just FYI. Vista Has Much More To It. You Can Search Google For Tips On
Making Vista Run Quicker But XP Will Always Run Faster. Just FYI

All programs I say here are free.. follow the guide and if you have more
questions ask...

you can improve vistas performance, but its impossible to get vista to work
as fast as a fine-tuned XP...
The best you can get vista is 15% slower than xp, but that means you will
have a 15% boost from the default
30% slower vista is.

Here is my list of things you can do, if you need any help in any of these
post back

1) disable all non essential startup programs (start>in the search box type
msconfig, press enter, go to the startup tab)
OR/AND download autoruns, see what is going on there!
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
1b) with autoruns disable all non essential internet explorer add ons
t(oolbars etc)

2) disable all non essential services
Reference site: http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

3) Disable all non essential WINDOWS explorer add ons (shell extensions)
with Nirsoft shellexview (right click run as administrator to do this)
(see download on the bottom of page)
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

4) download ccleaner from here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
and clean up the TRASH from your disk

5) Create a new restore point, and use the disk clean up utility to clean up
old restore points THEN AFTER DOING 4 and 5 go to step 6
To do this correctly see this page
http://www.emachines.com/faq/vista/ck2007032859.html
and SCROLL DOWN TO WHERE IT SAYS>>>>
Removing all but the most recent restore point

6) Defragment your drive using a better-than-the-crap vista defrag, get it
here (free)
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag

WARNING>>>DO NOT turn off AERO GLASS as some might say, you will have LESS
performance since the in non aero
vista has absolutely NO acceleration in drawing the various windows objects
(unlike XP that DOES!!!!)

But you can turn off some of the vista effects...

7) Disable Visual Effects: Right click on Computer, and choose Properties,
Click on Advanced System Settings, and then under Advanced, click Settings,
Select the "Visual Effects" tab then disable a few of those, DO NOT set for
best performance or your AERO GLASS theme will turn off.. and as I said
before that's WORSE!

Tell me if this helps

some more tips about using AUTORUNS AND SHELLEXVIEW that I talked about in
my previous post

Autoruns> go to options and select HIDE MICROSOFT ENTRIES so you wont
disable the MS stuff

SHELLEXVIEW > disable ONLY the stuff highlighted in PINK and only if you are
sure you dont need them

both the actions in autoruns and shellexview are reversable, just recheck
the entries if you decide you need something.

USE GOOGLE as a reference if you dont know something, or you can always
right click on the item and search for more info online!!!

GOOD LUCK!

Wow! All seriously good tips.

I've also set a good number of my greedy programs to use a single core i.e.
set the affinity. Seems to work for me. And I disabled the Vista backup
module since I use a 3rd party program. Also limited the shadow copy size
i.e. the amount of space used for restore points. Oh and ReadyBoost is
disabled on my system - it was useless.

I'm sure there's tons of other things that can be done, but it depends on
what you're running and how you use your system I guess. Thanks again for the
additional tips.

Simple answer, no - not on the same hardware.

Near as i can tell rich they are about the same or Vista is slightly faster.
You have a POS computer?

That's been my experience as well. Correctly installed with proper drivers
and no OEM crapware, Vista leaves XP in the dust. Mostly due to Vista's
superior memory management - Vista actually will USE all 4 gigs of RAM to
cache everything, instead of thrashing the disk to reload every time you
swap windows like in XP, due to XP's brain dead "use as little RAM as
possible - it's scarce and expensive!", 1990's style memory management.

That has been my experience as well, I set up Vista 64 bit Ultimate, in a
dual boot with my XP Pro 32 bit install, mainly because I was curious and
wanted to play around with a 64 bit OS, and knew I now had available 64 bit
Vista drivers for all my peripherals. I find Vista to certainly be
snappier, and I have gotten to where I like it much better.

I still have XP, as I have some programs I have not migrated over yet, but
for the most part I find I rarely boot into XP any longer, preferring to run
my Vista 64 bit install, I have been pleasantly surprised. I also have 4gb
of ram.
Once I have all my essential programs I want to run, running to my
satisfaction in Vista 64 bit, I can see myself then totally wiping the XP
drive at that point.

How often should you do this

So we have Slap, Campbell and Don agreeing on stuff that has been proven
incorrect by hundreds of independent tests all over the internet.

Vista is slower than xp on ALL hardware. Sorry guys you all lose.
But you might think of mentioning this delusion to your doctor if it
continues.

Earle
Fri Mar 28 19:32:16 PDT 2008

"To store restore points, you need at least 300 megabytes (MB) of free space
on each hard disk that has System Protection turned on. System Restore might
use up to 15 percent of the space on each disk. As the amount of space fills
up with restore points, System Restore will delete older restore points to
make room for new ones."

This is from the help file. It doesn't actually come out and say what the
maximum it will use is. I think if that 22 GB is just sitting around as
empty space, system restore points is as good a use as any. In principle,
Vista will delete them as needed.

Cheers,

Earle

Pro-testor, could you please provide us links to the "hundreds o
independent tests all over the internet?" In fact, I'll settle for link
to just 50 of those "independent tests all over the internet.

I know, you really don't have any evidence, but it makes you feel al
good inside to make such idiotic claims

_General_note_: The next time you encounter someone stating: "studie
have shown that..." "there's strong evidence for..." "it's been prove
that..." ask them to provide references to those "studies," tha
"evidence," those "independent tests." They're rhetorical devices tha
almost always mean: "I have absolutely no evidence for what I'm about t
claim, and that's exactly why I'm making such bogus claims...

For me, the only evidence I need, is the performance on my own system, which
with Vista Ultimate 64 bit, is very, very good!

I am always amazed, by folks that will come back and say " no your wrong, it
has been proven on the internet you can't be right".
Simply amazing.

Meanwhile, I will continue to boot into Vista 64 bit, and enjoying the
increased performance!

Exactly! And pro-tester will never see the irony in his/her commen
about delusion

Vista doesn't work properly for them, therefore, it just can't wor
properly for anyone else. It's like a two year old playin
hide-and-go-seek and who hides by covering their eyes, believing tha
they can't be seen because they can't see anyone else

Its one of the main mistakes that the anti-ms trolls make. By spreading
their FUD, outright lies, and fabricated horror stories about Vista, in a
vain attempt to scare people away, they have set peoples expectations for
Vista SO low, that when people actually get a chance to use it, they are
"pleasantly surprised".

That certainly happened in my case.
I kept putting off Vista, due to what I had read on these forums and
elsewhere.

I finally decided to see for myself, had 64 bit drivers available for what I
needed, and wanted to just play around with it. Man was I surprised.
Couldn't see myself going back to XP now...

I was in the same boat when I first loaded Vista on my machine. I kept my XP
as a dual boot security blanket, just in case.
As it turned out, Vista ran great, so two days later I did a clean install,
and dumped XP.

Never looked back.

I think the biggest problem some people have is that MS has finally locked
down the OS (having users running their apps as users, and not full admin).
This was LONG overdue in windows land. Now the free ride is over, and the OS
is going to make it difficult for anyone to run with the "doors unlocked".
Those windows users who cant handle it, are going to be surprised to find
out the Mac, and Linux are running the same way. And if they are holding out
hope the Windows 7 will go back to the old insecure ways that windows used
to run, they will be disappointed.

They would be better off learning how a modern OS is supposed to run, rather
then turning off all the features that increases its security in the first
place.

For me Vista is undoubtedly much faster than XP, especially after SP1.
don't doubt the problems others are having, but my experience has bee
positive.

Indeed, I will never go back to XP..
