    - Boot failure for about 1 in 5 starts On my brand new Dell Precision laptop with Vista Business x64, I find that about 1 in 5 starts gets as far as the green progress/activity indicator bar then brings up a completely black screen but never progresses to the giant orb so that I can log in. Rebooting then brings up the suggestion to enter startup repair which I do and which has always (so far at least) solved the problem. The machine then boots normally. Any idea what is causing these intermittent boot failures? Any way to fix them?     - Blue Screen error code 0x100000c5 Hi everybody, Any ideas how to fix a blue screen with error code 0x100000c5? I have this brand-new computer HP with Vista Home (not even a month old). I bought the upgrade to Vista Buisness, but it upgraded it to Vista Ultimate. Now, everytime that I: 1. have an application that requires attention, like for example: * open Notepad, * write something, * go to File -> Save 2. Ask for a shut down, 3. A black screen appears saying that there are open applications and that I will loose info if I continue, but I click on the shutdown button anyway, Then: * The next time I try to turn the computer on I get a blue screen just before the User Logon screen, with an error code of 0x100000c5 (0x00, 0x02, 0x01, 0x81ce88d9). * The next time I try to turn the computer, there is a 50% chances I get the blue screen again. * The third time I try to turn the computer almost always work. ... HOWEVER ... If I first close all open applications and then shut down the computer, everything works well. This tells me that this is not a hardware or driver issue.     - Changing Restore Point settings, files? Is there any way to change the amount of disk space used by the System Restore system for storing Restore Points? Or to delete restore points? I want to try to ensure that I keep the restore point made immediately prior to updating to SP1, and that Point is the oldest one listed. I'm afraid that I'm about to try one thing too many that will cause Vista to delete that Point in order to remain within its set total size allotment.     - USB "Gigabank" 8 gig portable device not found I've tried disk management, I've tried disabling all my usb ports, I still have no answers. When I first go this device, it worked. No problems. After I removed it from my system and plugged it back in a few days later, it doesn't work. I think? You can hear the USB chime, but nothing ever shows up. If I look in disk management, it appears something is there, but when i right click it I only get the "help" option, unlike the other disks that let me assign drive letters and what have you.     - Help! My desktop&taskbar is gone! So I have vista home premium, all was going well until yesterday! The PC will boot up normally, I can see everything icons, taskbar all boot up.     - Odds and Inns I would just like to say that Vista has ups and downs, just like Windows 98 did so they made Windows 98 SE. I think Microsoft is producing OS to fast. By the time XP was released yes it had issues yes MS fixed them and then BAM a new OS Vista is now available. I think Aero is ok but not great so we should have kept XP Pro killed XP Home and offered a SP3 with a system analyzer to see if Aero and other "Vista type" Improvements would work on your system. Just think in 3 years give or take a few Windows 7 or what ever they are calling it by that time will be out and the problems from Vista will just be on the way to getting fixed. I hope MS extends the Licensing for XP Pro past 2009. I tend to see things in a different light than most I think but here is my interpretation of what the Windows Versions should have lived up to again this is just my common sense approach and I did not go to MIT or anything, but do hold my Associates in Computer Science. Windows XP Home Edition SP2 - Key word here is Home - XP Home Edition did its job well to start with because it was easier for home users to find stuff over ME and 2000. However a major flaw with RDP and other networking abilities. Windows XP Professional SP2 - Key word Professional - XP Pro was just like XP Home with larger networking abilities and dynamic disk support and encryption of the NTFS filling system. I think these features should have been available for home users including RDP with the exception of Dynamic Disk Support because many "home" users would not know what that is anyway. Now I will move on to the many versions and editions of Vista. Vista Home Basic - This version is over priced simply because it is basic your better off with XP Home. I would have liked to see this version of Windows retail for $50.00 for OEM and $65.00 for Retail Vista Home Premium - When I think of MS and the word Premium I am thinking top of the line. I was greatly disappointed in features and expandability with VHP (Vista Home Premium) I wanted RDP to actually work, full IIS integration w/ support for Web Servers and Virtual Directories, Network Management Console would have helped as well so I could see and manage all my systems in my home along with printers etc. Less overhead for networking, Less of a dumb system. Clarification: Network Management Console as see by Home Users: I want to be able to see my son's computer and printers etc and setup features and fix problems through RDP. Basically using the Master/Slave type configuration where my system is the Primary on the network and his is more like a client or subordinate system which I could setup policy via a nice Icon with real world explanations along with explanation videos to help the parent set things up the right way the first time not an automated system that MS controls. VHP is not Premium when Windows 2000 Pro offers more for less. This version should have retailed for $120.00 for OEM and $135.00 Retail Vista Business - This is a more complete OS for home users. It offers XP Home, XP Pro, and VHP in one. For the average business person this OS falls short. It is like using MS Money when you should have used QuickBooks Pro. BTW for a Business OS While it covered Networking pretty good no real business tools are found, I would have expected to have had a version of Money being it is MS Proprietary, Office 2007 Enterprise Edition, detailed view (video) of Forefront also a $100.00 off Ticket for Expression Web and related items. Accounting Software. All of this was missing from a so called Business version look at all the missed opportunities to educate new business owners and workers on what is new. With large corporations that have license agreements or any one person that activates over 300 copies of Vista Business they would receive a Basic version of Windows Server 2008 Free, this would promote more sales and cut down on piracy since large companies get away with it more than your home user. This version should retail for $200.00 OEM and $225.00 Retail now with all the additions including a full functional Office it would Retail for $500.00 OEM and $650.00 for Retail because 1 it is intended for businesses and 2 it has a full version of Office included. Vista Ultimate - Not needed if the other versions would have lived up to expectations maybe rename this version to Windows Gamer Edition with less business stuff and better support for games and better Game Server networking Abilities. Toss in a $100.00 off ticket to the Nvidia 900 Series and 800 Series Video Cards regardless of where you buy it. This version would only be available in a hybrid OEM/Retail version where Nvidia and MS come together to design an OS just for Gamers. Some other things to add value to Windows and catch-up with Linux and Apple. Office should be integrated Better Media Center with more codec's already installed Version tools ie Home =home tools Business = business tools Educated Versions - each version when being installed should ask point blank about familiarity with Windows and Education of the user in IT fields this would prevent annoying the hell out of IT people but allow the OS to be understandable to computer idiots like a dynamic system. A Windows Default Button and Windows System Default Button: Windows Default Button: This button would take only Windows files and settings back to the first time you booted up Windows but not uninstall any of your programs or Documents etc. Windows Updates and settings and Files would be compared to the CD or DVD and reverted back. Windows System Default Button: This button would do the same thing as above, but also erase any non Windows Files such as your programs, MY Documents, etc all gone. A complete restoration of the OS and Deletion of any file not on the CD or DVD. Windows Mail - Delete it Windows Messenger - Delete it Windows Live Mail - Integrated Windows Live Messenger - Integrated Windows Live One Care - Integrated and first year included w/ first activation Windows SkyDrive Integrated and 100GB of storage included w/ Vista Home Premium and Vista Business and fix the timeout issues with uploading large files also SkyDrive will test your internet connection and you must have 4mbps min. I am sure some of you guys/girls will agree with my assessments and some will not helpful criticisms is welcomed that is how we learn and grow stupidity is unwelcomed.     - Found the Signma Tel Driver for sp1 Ok someone on the dell forum actually found an updated driver on Dells website and it is actually in the wrong place but it is for the E520, E521 and a bunch more. T7700 (Core2Duo), 4GB, Vista Business with SP1, and it's been mighty fine! Since installing SP1, when I right-click a desktop icon, I'll sometimes get the spinning blue ring leading to Explorer failure (followed by self-recovery). It's inconsistent, and I don't know what conditions are required to replicate the problem. Any ideas from the experts?     - The case of the missing CPU cycles This has happened about 4 times now since setting up this brand new quad-core Vista Ultimate PC. There will be nothing running on the system, yet the CPU utilization shows 30-40%. However, the task manager (even with "show all processes from all users") shows nothing using the cpu, other than maybe dwm at 1%. The resource monitor shows the same. However, all four CPU cores are doing something. Visually inspecting the disk shows little or no activity, so it's not vm thrashing. The dwm is slow and lagging -- if I try to open up a command window and drag it, it is slow to redraw. If I type characters into a command window, the keystrokes lag. My suspicion is that it is one of the drivers (probably the graphics driver) that is consuming these cpu cycles, yet Vista is failing to account for it in the process table. I'm using an nvidia 8800GTS video card. Anyone else experience this problem? Does anyone know a way to "reboot" just the graphics subsystem (i.e. restart the video drivers while Vista is running)? You can compare the Windows registry to a database. It stores informations related to Windows and other installed application on your system, but also Hardware. Think now if someone need to change the computer name via programming. How can he do this? Programmers can think of files (text files) to store the computer and windows information. But when file get big and heavy, Database will be more secure. And then they had (Windows builder) the choice of a database "Windows Registry". Microsoft Dot Net Frame 1.1 and higher have implemented a great solution for registry on their classes. This will replace the hard work and long lines of code that programmers have to write if they are using Visual Studio 6.0 for example. 2- How to read, write and change the registry Windows has a wonderful tool on it, named "Registry Editor". But you won't find it, unless you open the System32 folder on the Windows folder. But we can easily run it through the execute command it the start menu. Just type "regedit" (without quotes). Now the registry editor will open. Please before doing any changes on your registry make a backup. To do a windows registry backup: File > Export > Give a name for the file and select the All option box. The backup may block your pc from working for a short period of time. You'll see that there are 5 folder. Those are the main folder (named hives) and you can't add another main folder. Now you can select any folder and right click on it, then add a new sub-folder or value. By selecting any folder and right clicking, you'll find a list of action that you can do. If the action is blended (made not selectable), then either it's impossible or you don't have the rights to do this action. You need administrator rights to change registry keys. 3- HIVES (main registry folders) and their use The registry is split into a number of logical sections named "hives", those are the top main folder that can added, edited or renamed. They all start with "HKEY" prefix. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Stores information about registered applications, such as Associations from File Extensions and OLE Object Class ID's tying them to the applications used to handle these items. HKEY_CURRENT_USER Stores settings that are specific to the currently logged-in user. The HKCU key is a link to the subkey of HKEY_USERS that corresponds to the user; the same information is reflected in both locations. On Windows- NT based systems, each users' settings are stored in their own files called NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT inside their own documents and settings subfolder. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Abbreviated HKLM, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stores settings that are general to all users on the computer. On NT-based versions of Windows, HKLM contains four subkeys, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE and SYSTEM, that are found within their respective files located in the %SystemRoot% \System32\Config folder. A fifth subkey, HARDWARE, is volatile and is created dynamically, and as such is not stored in a file. Information about system hardware drivers and services are located under the SYSTEM subkey, whilst the SOFTWARE subkey contains software and windows settings. HKEY_USERS Contains subkeys corresponding to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys for each user registered on the machine. HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG Contains information gathered at runtime; information stored in this key is not permanently stored on disk, but rather regenerated at boot time. 4- Definition of registry values Binary Value REG_BINARY Raw binary data. Most hardware component information is stored as binary data and is displayed in Registry Editor in hexadecimal format. DWORD Value REG_DWORD Data represented by a number that is 4 bytes long (a 32-bit integer). Many parameters for device drivers and services are this type and are displayed in Registry Editor in binary, hexadecimal, or decimal format. Related values are DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the lowest address) and REG_DWORD_BIG_ENDIAN (least significant byte is at the highest address). Expandable String Value REG_EXPAND_SZ A variable-length data string. This data type includes variables that are resolved when a program or service uses the data. Multi-String Value REG_MULTI_SZ A multiple string. Values that contain lists or multiple values in a form that people can read are generally this type. Entries are separated by spaces, commas, or other marks. String Value REG_SZ A fixed-length text string.     - WMI Provider Host stopping Hi; I've got four brand new dells. All running Vista Business; all now with SP1. And all of them with the same problem - a box pops up and tells me that the "WMI Provider Host has stopped working". Don't know what it does; but it'd been like this for about a week. I hoped that SP1 would sort it out, but I downloaded that last night, and it's no go. There's a hotfix for this very problem on Microsoft's site - I've installed it, to no avail.     - Endless loop Yesterday an auto update from microsoft was downloaded by my laptop (Gateway- Vista Home Premium) After the download to finish the installation the coputer rebooted..... When it gets to the blue welcome window a message (more or less)- "stage 3 update 0% complete" appears- after 10 minutes the computer shuts down and repeats the above...... over and over for hours. If I try booting it in safe mode- same problem If I get the 'auto fix' screen- it reboots several times but ultimately the same problem... How can I stop this? What can I do to correct it..     - Blue Screen Errors I, too, am plagued with BSOD. I have a Dell Dim E521, purchased about 10 mos ago. Dell's answers have been everything from driver updates (which don't work for the machine problems) to restoring to factory setup, which doesn't work for me. Stripping away all of my useful programs may be an answer, but not the right answer. Dell is going to call again today. I think these are the same guys I talk to when I call HP support. So far I've communicated with half the male population of India. I'm no computer geek (and don't intend to spend 10 hours a week to become one), but have been involved in analytical trouble shooting all of my life. My take is that these BSOD posts represent less than 5% of the BSOD problems being encountered with Vista. The actual problem is way too widespread to be blamed on hardware. If Microsoft really wants to get to bottom of this, you need to start asking better questions to find the commonalities, i.e. Virus software, device drivers, usage patterns, etc., and stop worrying about stepping on the toes of various software providers. Otherwise we'll all just continue grasping at straws, and the favored target straw is as varied as the number of techs. The shotgun approach of uninstalling everything but Vista would give me 100 GB of disk space that I would never use, and reduce my machine to toy status. As of 8 days ago will not finish booting - simply ends with a mouse pointer on a black screen (pointer moves when mouse is moved). Now in the begining USB devices worked fine, you put them in and vista reckonises them as per all the drivers pre installed (as XP was) But then my mate came round with his mobile phone that acts as a memory stick too, it would reckonise his phones memory stick, so i downloaded the software for the phone and that seemed to work using the phones software. According to http://www.the-eggman.com/seminars/ftp_error_codes.html,
the 300 codes mean "The command has been accepted, but the requested
action is being held pending receipt of further information."

331 means "Username OK, need password". So it looks like the server is
not receiving your password. You need to check that you are sending
the password properly, and that you are sending the correct password.
